Big Sky's Mystery 12th School is...

SUU only if a WAC flunky doesn't drop down

San Jose St

Idaho

They probably haven't asked SUU yet in order to see if a WAC school will make the move. The Sky did say they will make the announcement by October. SUU will not say no.

If football is the be-all and end-all many of you say it is, eleven is a nice place to be. The only real reasons to go to twelve are for hoops scheduling or to get a football championship game. The problem with that scenario is that unless the NCAA allows the Sky to unilaterally start a week or so early, we're never going to fit the championship game in before the playoffs unless we revert to the old barnstorming mentality, which isn't going to happen. The only other deal is this weak double autobid I've been hearing about. I don't know many people who would be thrilled with that given that there would be no true conference champion.

Exactly. In FCS, I'm pretty certain you're not allowed to have a conference title game unless you give up the playoff bid.

Not to mention 12 gives the even split for 5 in your division, plus a rotating 3 from the other, or if a lack of OOC games, a 3-year cycle of rotating 4 from the other division.

The more I think about this, it may not be a foregone conclusion that the BSC adds a 12th member right away. If Poly and Davis are not going to be full members until the 2012 season, there is plenty of time for Fullerton to wait and see how the WAC scenario pans out. I think we will know more in the spring, but if Hawaii goes indie or Utah State gets a MWC invite, the WAC is for sure done. San Jose State could drop football, perhaps NMSU and La Tech could go to the Sun Belt........but again, how about Idaho. Perhaps back to the Sun Belt for them, but they *really* need to start asking themselves if it makes more sense to be in a conference with Western Kentucky and La-Monroe than one with Montana, Montana State, Eastern Washington, etc. They have not been successful at the FBS level. Seems like a no-brainer to me. So maybe, just maybe, Fullerton is holding out on selecting a 12th team in case someone at idaho comes to their senses and wants back in the BSC. :thumb:

The folks at SUU have to be sweating right now.

I know it would screw with seeding, but in theory, we could play the last regular season game on Saturday, play a title game on Tuesday or Wednesday, and then hit the first round on Saturday. That would likely postpone seeding until after the game, though.

Given that that hasn't happened on a regular basis since the '20s or '30s, it'd be rather dumb, but it IS theoretically possible.

The problem is there is no such thing as going down a division- you either stay where you are, you go up, or you drop football. Nobody has gone down in a division since the '70's. Idaho in the BSC makes too much sense to ever happen, because nobody steps down. Also, a team that won the Humanitarian Bowl isn't going to consider dropping down the next season

SJSU, however, is an interesting prospect- it may be conceivable that the Big Sky could talk them into the sense of being in the same conference as Sac State, Cal Davis, and Cal Poly, versus one that could travel to Louisiana and Hawai'i in the same season... still it'd be pretty landmark were they able to do so for the same reason- nobody drops down.
LONG LIVE THE NCAC! LONG LIVE SAN FRANCISCO STATE FOOTBALL!

You aren't getting it. If the Big Sky has a conference title game...NONE of the Big Sky teams would be eligible for the playoffs.

Point taken, though not entirely accurate. A couple dozen schools reclassified in the early '80's as a result of league reclassification, the Ivy, Southland and Southern among them, along with a few independents like W&M, Richmond, VMI, etc.

As long as the NCAA permits reclassification from FBS to FCS, the possibility exists for it to happen. It may be the last possible alternative for most schools, but it remains an option.

Since the term FBS is fairly new, that's true. However, a couple dozen schools have reclassified from I-A to I-AA.

HF,

You know while it's an 'option' it hasn't happened in recent memory. Furthermore, instituional egos and public perceptions will not allow any school to drop down in football classification from FBS, unless there are some wholesale transformations iniatiated by the NCAA.

The NCAA began the I-A/I-AA classification for the 1978 season and no team/conference has reclassified 'down' since the 1982 season. I would call those first 4 years after the I-A/I-AA classification a transition period for everyone.

No football program has moved down from highest NCAA classification of I-A (FBS) since the 1982 season - more than 25 years ago.

ww, SH does not, and as far as I remember has not ever dealt in what we understand to be reality. It is all child like, mysogeny all the time.

If you let it get to you AT ALL it would probably make you as bat shit as SH so you must let it in. Just stand back and poke fun and shake your head at it all.

Could you imagine the money conference would make off this game? It's gonna be so sweet! It would be like having a bowl game before the playoffs.

I think they are planning on just rotating the sites each year so that every team get a chance to host it.

I like the rotation idea, however, Poly and the Manure Pile only seat 11k and 10k respectively. And don't forget about some of the other teams' capacities.

IF there is a championship game it would have to be held at a venue capable of seating the masses that are sure to go and see it. Of course, if that were to happen, it would surely compel some other BSC schools to upgrade or lose out on revenue from hosting the game.

its not if but when. in the video fullerton said we will have the conf championship game at the hornets nest every yr. 5 fans from each school will be allowed to go. the remaining 300 seats will be up for grabs at :twocents: each.

if there is say a 3 way tie the first 2 teams will play the first half then the winner plays the other team in the 2nd half.

Its too bad about not being able to have a conference championship, Imagine having the game at like Sam Boyd Stadium (UNLV 36,800) or Mackay Stadium (Nevada 30,000) smack dab in the middle of the Big Sky Conference :thumb:

but I like the playoffs better and a chance at a National Title.
