Re: Press Conf: big sky/cal poly/uc davis
Only thing I can find is this:
Sounds like everyone actually has kept their mouth shut for once.
http://missoulian.com/sports/college/mo ... 002e0.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Both Cal Poly and the Big Sky Conference have scheduled press conferences for Tuesday afternoon, and though neither body is talking about the subject matter, the timing appears to be related.
The Tribune of San Luis Obispo, Calif., announced that Cal Poly's press conference is set for 3:30 p.m. Mountain time, in the president's suite at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, home to the football Mustangs.
Jon Kasper, assistant commissioner for media relations for the Big Sky, said on Monday, "All I can tell you is the Big Sky will be having a press conference at 1 p.m. tomorrow."
There has been rampant speculation in California that Cal Poly could be part of a conference realignment. That includes a rumor that the Mustangs, as well as UC-Davis, could become either full-fledged or football-only members of the Big Sky.
The latter would be a first for the Big Sky, which took shape in 1963. The league mandates that member schools all take part in the same 14 sports.
"There's a lot of rumors out there, but we're hearing the same thing, and we're not sure what's coming across," Montana athletic director Jim O'Day said. "There's a lot of speculation about the Big Sky, the WAC and where Cal Poly will end up.
"I'm sure we'll hear more tomorrow morning."
Sounds like everyone actually has kept their mouth shut for once.

With 11 or 12 teams, you wouldn't play everyone! Oh the humanity!!! How would you ever crown a true conference champion?

Re: Press Conf Today: big sky/cal poly/uc davis
Would love to see Cal-Poly and Cal-Davis join the BSC, even if only as football-only members. Hell, the majority of their schedules (to include SUU's) are made up of BSC teams anyway. Joining the BSC would be a good idea for all three - less OOC scheduling issues, and reduced travel costs not having to go to the Dakota's. Plus this would solidify FCS football on the west coast.
Adding Davis and Poly has to be appealing to Sac State. Adding SUU the same for Weber.
Still, I'm not holding my breath. Common sense seems to be elusive in the offices of the Big Sky.

They can't call that a conference...it's just a scheduling arrangement if they can't play each team...93henfan wrote:But, but, but...

It won't matter because they likely won't join until 2012. At that time the Big Sky will be losing 2-3 teams to the WAC. The Big Sky will still be a 9 or 10 team league. We'll never have a 12 team season.93henfan wrote:But, but, but...

If they are football only members, I sure hope Sac State can pull the same deal and join the Big West for everything else. I haven’t seen any announcements out of cal-davis regarding a press conference but it would be a complete shock if they were left out.

especially in basketball if we were to hvae 10-12 teams. thats 6 more guaranteed wins for weber in basketball. no offense davis poly and suu. 20-6 vs suu, 2-0 vs davis, 0-0 vs poly.

Not an insider, just some one who can connect the dots. Do you really think anyone would be stupid enough to agree to a 12 team league when there is only 1 autobid? Why add more competition for the one spot? Only idiots would agree to that kind of arrangement. It is just getting the pieces in place to fill in for the loss of teams that is going to come.93henfan wrote:Oh, OK, so you're an insider. According to this article, the WAC will likely be having their press conference in the spring of 2011. http://www.ksl.com/?sid=12250476&nid=858

why would someone be stupid enough to join a conference with 0 autobids? oh wait, uc david did, suu did, cal poly did. now theycan be in a conf that has a bid. now as for the big sky teams, maybe they welcome the challenge and hope to strenghtne the conf, more importantly they are trying to avoid what is hapening to the wac.BearIt wrote:Not an insider, just some one who can connect the dots. Here's a dot for you, BearIt: Cal Poly & Davis are NOT in a conference that has an autobid currently (and probably will NEVER get one). So, for them, it's a great deal. Instant gratification, so to speak.BearIt wrote:Not an insider, just some one who can connect the dots. Re: Press Conf Today: big sky/cal poly/uc davis
I agree that is the GWC view point, but what about the current members of the Big Sky? There is no incentive for the Big Sky to become a 12 team league other than to create a conference that will be stable if/when teams move to the WAC.AZGrizFan wrote: Here's a dot for you, BearIt: Cal Poly & Davis are NOT in a conference that has an autobid currently (and probably will NEVER get one). Re: Press Conf Today: big sky/cal poly/uc davis
True, the BSC only gets one auto-bid.........but that's kind of a non-issue. So does every other conference that gets an auto-bid, to include the CAA.
That said, the BSC sent three teams to the play-offs last year. One would have to assume that with a larger conference we'd get at least 3 (or more) just about every year.
Like I said, I hope this happens. One thing I am kind of concerned with, however, is the fact that no one really seems to know the deal.........I mean, wouldn't all the BSC schools have to vote to include additional conference members? I haven't seen anything to that effect coming out of any of the schools. I read somewhere that even Montana has no idea what's going on. Doesn't really bode well. That's why I think this announcement may have something more to do with stadium expansion or expressing their intention to join the WAC......(why I don't know).

I think the point he is making is that there will now be MORE teams competing for those 3 playoff bids.

I'm going to backtrack a little. The only other incentive I could see is that it might reduce some travel costs. I don't know how significant the savings would be when you still would have to play a couple teams from the other division.

Why not? Last year between the BSC and the GWC there were only 3 playoff teams. But I agree; potentially there could be a fourth. I think it would be hard pressed to get 5 bids.rationalgriz wrote:Nothing says it would be only 3.

No there won't. SUU and UC Davis couldn't compete for bids when they WEREN'T in the conference. They certainly won't when they ARE in the conference.SDHornet wrote:I think the point he is making is that there will now be MORE teams competing for those 3 playoff bids.
