As far as debuts go, Zach Bauman couldn't have asked for much better. The Lumberjacks' true freshman running back set the new standard for first-game performances under coach Jerome Souers. He ran 22 times for 167 yards and four touchdowns in the NAU football team's season-opening 48-0 victory against Western New Mexico in the Walkup Skydome Thursday night.
"No, actually, I prayed about it a lot," Bauman said when asked if he ever imagined having his first college game be this good. "Coming into reality, it's pretty special."
Bauman started the game and scored the Jacks' first touchdown of the season, finishing a seven-play drive with a 10-yard score within the game's first four minutes.

I watched most of this game, was surprised at couple of bad throws that the QB had, recievers were wide open, hope the CB is back, hate to see that in a game like this. the Jacks looked good, hard to tell given the competition they were playing.

Agreed these games don't reveal much about a team in the same way a IA game doesn't show that much. With that said, Herrick's decision making was definitely worrisome resulting in those two picks - one into double coverage and the other no where near a receiver. I don't know if he's not as confident in his receivers this year compared to last, but hopefully he gets it together. And a very good game by Bauman - hopefully this kid will be able to perform on a similar level against Big Sky opponents.cats2506 wrote:I watched most of this game, was surprised at couple of bad throws that the QB had, recievers were wide open, hope the CB is back, hate to see that in a game like this. the Jacks looked good, hard to tell given the competition they were playing.

Be careful about using the word "dashing," Jon.
We wouldn't want to open ourselves to a lawsuit from "Dashing" Cody Rhodes, right?
Yet another young wrestler I'd love to chuck. Watching footage of his dad is more fun....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

That young kid Bauman seems to be the real deal, despite the lack of competition WNMU put up. Spoke quickly with coach during the spring and he was most excited about the RB’s he was able to bring in during recruiting, and they proved it last night. As for Herrick I think his struggles last night stem from both having to adjust to the new receivers and the pressure of matching or out performing his great season from last year. I think Herrick will get more comfortable with his new corps of WRs as the year develops. The thing I liked was how the team appeared to be completely balanced, something I was a little apprehensive about because of the loss of Alex Henderson. The defense was great for most of the night holding the mustangs to 164 total yrds. I just hope Dumas gets back on the field, we defiantly need his presence back at corner.

I watched the NAU-W.New Mexico game, too. I agree that Herrick will need to get more comfortable with these new receivers. With that said, I believe when the QB makes a throw and no receiver is around, the receiver probably ran the wrong route. I think that was the case on a few throws last night. Nonetheless, Western New Mexico may be the worst college football team I've ever seen. I had to spray my TV with deoderant when it was over
