No...that's a question for historians...down the road...OSBF wrote:UNI31f wrote:So....why do I have a friend that is going to be sent to Iraq in the next couple months?
The bigger question to be asked is why were we there in the first place.
I always thought we were wrong to get into Iraq...but since we broke it...it's our responsibility to fix it...
Obama wants to simply walk away from that responsibility...

It really doesn't matter where you strike or occupy - plug the hole in Iraq, terrorism pops up in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia, or various other places. Leave Iraq, and it will fill in behind you - terrorism hates a vacuum.
The days of playing the role of world police effectively have ended - we don't have the resources to be everywhere at once, especially when our Saudi "allies" are turning a blind eye to what's happening in their own backyard. We need to move aggressively away from Middle East oil dependence by any means possible and let these unstable regimes resolve their own issues.

Question: Do you honestly think it's fixable with the current state of the US military and international diplomacy?Col Hogan wrote:I always thought we were wrong to get into Iraq...but since we broke it...it's our responsibility to fix it...

I agree that this exit was hasty, but do you really think the eventual outcome would be any different if we stayed longer? Since the minute we went in with an inadequate ground force, I've been saying that we can get out now or in 30 years, and the outcome will be the same: Sunnis and Shiites in civil war within a few months and no resolution until another strong-arm dictator, this time Shiite and backed by Iran, takes over.

Because we can't keep the same people over there indefinitely. Sounds like a troop rotation. You do realize we're keeping 50K in the Green Zone and other strategic points, right?UNI31f wrote:I don't disagree, BUT if the war is over why are more troops being sent into Iraq?OSBF wrote:

Gotta agree with Z here, trying to paint Iraq today as a military destination on the same level of Germany, Japan, etc is just too much of a stretch. We still have 50k troops in harms-way in Iraq, whether we call them combat troops or not. The level of actual danger in Iraq is far, far more than what military personnel face in those other destinations. Heck, even Korea is far safer of an environment and all we have is a 60 year old armistice there keeping us separated from a far more substantial force.AZGrizFan wrote:Tell that to the families of the "non-combat" troops who will continue to come home in body bags.dbackjon wrote:

OK, so NOW it is ok to make glib answers about dead soldiers? Wasn't ok when Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld were murdering Americans?
UNISWF asked if there were no combat operations, why were we still sending soldiers there. Simply answered that doesn't mean a thing.
Will it still be dangerous? Yup. SHould we pull out completely? Hell yes. But then the Colonel Hogans of the world will pillor Obama for that, as well.

(CNN)"Earlier today I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces,"
"Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors," said (Bill) Clinton.
Clinton also stated that, while other countries also had weapons of mass destruction, Hussein is in a different category because he has used such weapons against his own people and against his neighbors.
(WIKI)In a 1992 speech on the Gulf War, Gore stated that he twice attempted to get the U.S. government to pull the plug on support to Saddam Hussein, citing Hussein's use of poison gas, support of terrorism, and his burgeoning nuclear program, but was opposed both times by the Reagan and Bush administrations.

Face it, Obama is putting on a show, just like Bush. Obushma hasn't changed a thing...this was done for purely political reasons and nothing more. If anyone seriously believes that combat operations are over in Iraq, and on top of it believes that Obama's speech was not "Bush II" rallying the votes, then those folks are among the dumbest humans on this planet.
Say it isn't so, Jon.

The only thing I see missing from "the Col's" proposition is that there was no mention of the betting parlors that could be set up on the street corner. Imagine the capital, especially if it were taxed, that could be generated off that woman's, and others like her, learning curve. Real life educational opportunities (students could study the physics involved in the impacts and avoidance of), capitalistic business and employment, and taxable income going back the the government to help fund other such programs....a winner suggestion all the way around!Skjellyfetti wrote:OSBF wrote:
