Twins trade catching prospect Ramos to Nats for closer Capps.

Tigers season continues to get ugly........

Tigers have what may prove to be their last chance starting today. The White Sox in Detroit for four games. At seven games out currently, they damn near need a sweep.

I really liked the Twins throwback uni's yestday, 1909 St Paul Gophers Negro League version. Clevelands Buckeye uniforms were also nice.

Mauer family has paid for a charter bus for the parents of the local little league team headed to Williamsport. Nice gesture by the Mauer's.

In the "How do you like me now" department, Jim Thome hits the Twins first walk-off home run at Target Field against the team that let him go, the Chicago White Sox.

So for MLB first round, does the team with the best record automaticall get the WC, or do they get the team with the worst record of the four? In the AL it would seem Tampa or the Yankees would be better off facing the worst division winner than each other. :|

Best record plays the wildcard if not in same division, otherwise division winner with worst record.

What made that night even better was Pavanostache on the mound. That stache fits right in with that time frame.

Tigers are back to .500 and have firmly established themselves as the third best team in the AL Central.

The money is coming off the books for some of the bad deals, Dontrelle Willis etc. Ilitich will surely put the money back into the team for next year. He loves winners, aka the Red Wings. Lots of potential if he can get some better players to go with Cabrerra, Verlander, Jackson etc.

No question about it. There is something like $68 million in expiring contracts this year when you include Ordonez. That ankle injury was very literally a bad break for him. He needed 130 at bats to qualify for $15 million next year, now the team holds the option. I'd like to see him back, but not at that kind of money.

They have three young starters who have a lot of potential. Verlander obviously, Scherzer and Porcello. Bonderman or Gallaraga are okay as a fifth starter, but they need a good left handed starter or two. The bullpen was perceived as a strength at the beginning of the season, but was decimated by injuries. So they will have to evaluate the health of those players and proceed from there. Particularly Joel Zumaya. I really like the guy, but I'm not sure his arm can take the strain of consistent 100 mph pitches.

They need another solid outfielder, (Carl Crawford ?), and an upgrade at catcher. More power in the back end of their lineup. And need to be looking at a replacement for Guillen at second. He's another player who's really good when healthy, but is prone to injuries. Santiago will probably stay at SS for a while. Inge is a great fielder at 3rd, but doesn't hit very well for his position. He might be better used as a utility player.

Overall I"m very optimistic about the next several seasons. Cabrera is still young, even though he's been playing for several years. Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch are rookies who look like they'll be productive for many years. Raburn, Kelly and Peralta are solid reserves. They just need a few more pieces to complete the puzzle.

We could use Morneau anytime now. We still lead the league in hits and average, but power...not so much.

In 81 games Morneau was hitting .345 with 18 homeruns (Yep, he has been out since July 7th and he still leads the team in home runs) and 56 RBI...

Average that out to right now. The Twins have played 127 games. Let's say Justin played/DH'd in 120 of them (which he likely would have. That gives the Twins all kinds of offense, and we would likely have a 7 game lead at this point.

They put him on waivers along with Damon, but I don't think anyone has claimed him. Maybe somebody is interested in a trade? In any event, his is one of the expiring contracts this year. I'd like to see him stay in Detroit for his glove and his locker room presence. We shall see.

The Twins should be okay in the Central, but you will need Morneau in the playoffs. Any idea when he is due back?

NONE.

I have never saw an injury kept this secret/quiet, and that includes the way the Patriots do their injury report.

A couple weeks ago he was going to be ready to go, then he wasn't, then he was, then he wasn't.

The Twins aren't rushing him back (right now no need too), but his concussion must have been much worse than the video would show it to be. He still can't go more than a hard practice without "foggieness" apparently.

The Twins won't put a date on it because they don't want Justin to push himself to get back and make it worse. Well, at this point it is looking like mid-september....Justin may not get 100 games in this season and he is at 81 right now.

You're right that there is no need to rush him back. And a mid-September return might be ideal. It would give him a couple of weeks to get his timing back.

He has been hitting, running, fielding, etc... for a while now. The problem is he still is 'symptoms" after a couple work outs. Well, to be honest once a person suffers a concussion the symptoms NEVER go away.

Oh well, we don't need him yet...but the time is coming that we will

The Twins have had similar situations in the past with Jimmie Hall and the worst case Corey Koskie. Just depends on the severity. Hall could still play after being beaned, but couldn't hit lefties. Koskie, well he pretty much ended his career.

Tigers bullpen blows two in a row against the Twins.

On the plus side, last night Max Scherzer pitched nine innings, gave up one run on four hits, and had eight strike outs. :thumb:

I don't really follow baseball, but my brother is a big Cardinals fan, so I'll sometimes check out their scores, or their place in the standings when I browse the paper.

So I have to ask: WTF happened to them? did they just decide to stop playing a month or two early? sheesh!
