Sweeney played class A ball in Wilmington many moons ago, did he not?

If he came through the KC organization then the chances are good. I'm not good at remembering the name of every Blue Rock that came through.

I'm pretty sure that I remember seeing him play. I think he was one of the first Blue Rocks.

Ah, the joys of scoreboard watching on an off day.

Braves getting thumped 10-4 by the 'Stros in the 8th. :thumb:

Cubs with the early 2-0 lead out west over the Giants. :thumb:

Cards already won to move into a tie with the Phils.

Phils could move into a three-way tie for the wildcard lead without playing today if the Cubs beat the Giants.

Well, the Giants ended up winning in extras so no luck drawing into a tie without playing. But the Braves did give a 1/2 game back by losing to the Astros. Think it's all a matter of time, now, though, for the Phils to just take the lead and win the division. I don't think the Braves will fall apart, but I just don't see them having the power and depth that the Phils have. And there's something to be said about knowing how to win - this Phillies bunch knows how to finish off a season strong.

The Phillies' Achilles heel was on display last night: shaky starting pitching after the top 3 guys, and an abysmal bullpen. At least Domonic Brown looked good in that 15-9 loss.

Fortunately, come playoff time, we'll only see the top 3 pitchers. And if we need to see the long relief guys then we've already lost anyway. Just get to the playoffs and the Phillies strengths greatly outweigh the weaknesses.

Good thing RAJr picked up Sweeney, 'cause Gload just popped his groin. :ohno:

The injury bug is just unbelievable this year.

On the bright side, Gload's double turned into a second run in a 2-0 game. Oswalt is on tonight. Here's hoping he doesn't have another 7th inning letdown. Pitch count is up. God knows Charlie's prone to leave him in too long with this bullpen.

Good to see Oswalt get his first win as a Phil. :thumb:

Chipper Jones torn ACL, out for the year, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta fishwrap...

Looks like the winner of the division will be the team that can field nine players... I've never seen two teams get ravaged by injuries like the Phils and Braves in a close pennant race before.

It helps that the next best team in the division is the Mets. You can always count on them to find a way to lose.

It'd help if Jimmy could do much of anything. At least resemble a catalyst some time, grrrr

Splitting the first 6 isn't the way to start 16 out of 19 at home.

The whole ninth was a Broxton implosion. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Hits Polanco, walks Sweeney. Torre came out and they ran a super slo mo on the Philly station and you could see Torre say "do you trust your stuff?" Walks Werth to load the bases, then makes the right pitch to Francisco, who hits into a sure double play, but Blake misses an in between hop right through his legs. Two runs score. Then, Chooch crushes one in the left-center gap, off the wall, about three feet from being a homer. So sweet.

Are you saying that Polanco is bigger than the broad side of a barn?

That was a great comeback. I didn't see it coming, I thought that the Phils would lose 2 of 3 to LA, I'm glad I was wrong. :thumb:
