John Settle (# Retired)

On Nov. 22, 1986, before his last regular-season game at Kidd Brewer Stadium, the legendary John Settle became the first ASU football player to have his number (23) retired. Settle’s career established him as Appalachian’s all-time leader in almost every rushing category. Settle displayed courage every step of the way. His pride and respect for the game set the standard of excellence by which all Mountaineer athletes, past, present and future, strive to perpetuate. From 1983 through 1986, Settle graced the Appalachian backfield with steadfast courage and determination.
He finished his career as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 4,409 yards and 43 touchdowns. He presently holds 24 Appalachian records.

At the time of his departure from Boone, he was the third-ranked rusher in NCAA Division I-AA football history. Settle, a criminal justice major while at Appalachian, was named theSouthern Conference Player and Male Athlete of the Year as a senior, after rushingfor 1,661 yards and 20 touchdowns. One of the highlights of his season was hisfive-touchdown day in the Homecoming victory over Davidson on Nov. 4, 1986.The two-time All-American had a knack for rising to the occasion in the mostimportant games. In Appalachian’s first NCAA I-AA Playoff game in school history,on Nov. 29, 1986, Settle dazzled the crowd with 236 yards on 37 carries and a touchdown in the 28-26 defeat to Nicholls State.

#23 - Retired

Jerry Gaines (1970-75)

Image

Jerry Gaines was an Associated Press and American Football Coaches Association All-America selection in 1974 ... Also earned All-America honors in baseball and track & field while at Western ... Set WCU records with 3,449 career receiving yards, a 20.6-yard per reception average for his career, and recorded 15 games with over 100 yards receiving ... Only the second Western Carolina football player to have his jersey retired ... Inducted into Western Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990, WCU's first-ever induction class.

(Story taken from the article "Battle for the Old Mountain Jug"):

"An incident related to WCU's quest for Southern Conference membership occurred during the 1974 season that threw gasoline on the fires of the rivalry. Appalachian State officials informed Dr. H. F. Robinson, WCU's Chancellor, and Bob Waters, the athletics director and head football coach for Western, that if Jerry Gaines, the Catamounts' all-star wide receiver/kick returner - and arguably the school's best athlete ever - were allowed to play in the WCU-ASU football game in Boone, ASU would withdraw their support of Western's membership for the Southern Conference.

The premise was that Gaines was playing in 1974 season as a fifth-year medical red-shirt and red-shirting was not permitted in the Southern Conference. Gaines was injured in the first half of the second game of the 1971 season, incidentally against Appalachian State. Catamount fans believed Appalachian State's motive was based upon Gaines' performance in the previous two meetings in the series, both won handily by Western.

Gaines did not play in 1974, but his replacement, true-freshman Wayne Tolleson, caught what proved to be the winning touchdown pass in a 21-17 Catamount victory."
