Gardner-Webb Practice - 8-8-10

Post by elcid83 »

Made the short trip to Boiling Springs, NC to check on the Runnin' Bulldogs today. Practice started at 9:15 and it was already hot and muggy. Today was the first day with shoulder pads. The coaches were fired up and had the boys running their tails off. The coaches split up into several different stations and ran through various drills to enhance agility and strengthen skills. In news that has already been reported on the GWU website, Keenan Grissett [R-Freshman] has been taken out of the QB rotation and is now working out with the DBs [a spot the Bulldogs could have used some help with last year as the season progressed].

The O line was getting used to new coach Kris King, former GWU O line standout who professionally put the meat through their drills.

LG Corey O'Daniel had a good day and he really looks ready to play.

LT Jamie Dunaway [Soph] also had a good day when he wasn't illegally holding the defensive stars on the team.

The D line and the LBs were running like there was no tomorrow and the heat soon took its toll. By the end of practice, the number of players who were injured or suffering effects from the heat were in the double digits. I suppose all of these camps try to push their players as hard as they possibly can, but, it seems to me that the entire team would benefit from all players being available to practice.

The D line is getting to know their new coach in the form of Bobby Godinez. Coach G is another excited and innovative coach who has a very strong motor. The players relate very well to him and I believe his and Coach King's youthful enthusiasm will be great assets to the program.

Overall it was a good first day with shoulder pads. Here's hoping the boys get hydrated and get ready for another tough day tomorrow. Tuesday is the first day in full pads and I believe there will be a team scrimmage on Saturday

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

ElCid83 - Great job as always, thanks for the pics and the associated reporting. One minor contribution on my part, I believe that Kenny Dunaway's eligibility expired probably 20-25 years ago. As for his prodigy, Jamie Dunaway, yeah he might have been holding on the inside a bit against #44 (a.ka. Hudson Smith) but I didn't see no flags so it wasn't holding. Gotta take up for those hogs but I do think those D-line guys are looking sporty and will be a key to our success this season. Now Pork Chop, #88 in the same photo on the opposite side of Dunaway, that looks pretty much like holding. LOL! See you Saturday.

Go Runnin Bulldogs!
