YSU has been bad the last couple years. The new coach seems to have brought a lot of hope to the fan base though.
For UNI, a lot of it is because we lost 5 starters on the o-line and our starting QB. If you look at my "By the numbers" thread you'll see why people feel UNI will be down, and why I don't feel we will be as down as people believe. Actually a pretty good thread there with a couple different topics being discussed.
Youngstown State football coach Eric Wolford called his team’s preseason conference ranking embarrassing, disappointing and disrespectful. He didn’t call it unfair. “I think it’s embarrassing to the whole community and embarrassing to Youngstown State,” he said. “It’s disrespect. In some parts of this world we live in, if you disrespect someone, you may lose your life. “Right or wrong. I don’t handle disrespect very well. I’m sure my players won’t either. That’s why we’ve got a job to do.”
Now you guys see why we love our new coach !
Do you think he's talking about the Middle East...or just Youngstown?
I don't think any of you guys understand how intense our new head football coach is. I witnessed him speak at a local youth football camp and he made it a point to have every single kid's face looking up at him, or at the other speakers, and if they had not, he made them know it.
YSU, the past few years, has grown to have a reputation of being too weak physically in the league. I think we witnessed that in that SDSU game last season where they took control at the line thru the final 3 quarters to beat us 17-3. Wolford is a no nonsense, no BS guy, that although may come across as arrogant to some of you fans of the opposition, he is saying everything we believe needs to be addressed in order to become a winner.
NOBODY in Youngstown is satisfied with mediocrity. The Ohio HS website JJHuddle.com voted Youngstown the #2 spot for football in all of Ohio to just the Massillon/Canton Area.. Youngstown > Toledo, Cincy, Cleveland, Akron, Dayton, and Columbus. We LOVE our football here and we expect to win.
Considering we went 6-5 last year and still finished tied for 5th place in the league, I think you can understand why people in Youngstown are upset, but we understand we must EARN respect in this league... God help the first team in the league to look past these guys this season because they will pay. This isn't Heacock's crew anymore UNI, this is Wolf's crew!
The September 25th contest between YSU and Southern Illinois will go a long way in determining whether YSU is for real or a year or two away. That will be a dandy! Cannot wait!
Personally, I believe they will finish 7-4 and miss out on the playoffs this year... but I believe we will make a return to the playoffs next season and have a tremendous shot at taking the MVFC crown, that is how impressed I am with Wolford and his recruiting abilities.
Since taking over the job as head coach in December, Wolford has not only brought back the fans from the past that left under Heacock, but is bringing new fans on board for the ride over the coming years.

Welcome to having a real coach like the rest of the league.
Farley scares the living shit out of most people. He is known as "Skeletor" to a pretty good segment of the fan base at UNI.
Seriously though, Wolf sounds like the kind of coach your program needed
In reading through the media day information, I came away with the impression that we have two teams that could be anywhere in the MVFC. Those two are UNI and YSU. UNI for once has a TON of turnover. It truly will be the first season in about 5 for the Panthers to show if they reload or rebuild. YSU gets rid of 20 underclassmen, but replace with 36 new faces, new coaches, and a difficult first 4 games. For YSU, that is a recipe for finishing middle of pack or lower.
SIU has few positions missing, a 3rd year coach, and both UNI and SDSU at home.
SDSU will have a tough road to repeat the success that they had last year. However, if the Jacks win @ Delaware, watch out.
NDSU has a lot to prove, and not much proven talent on the team.
