Re: Now what with the Great West?
Yeah, tough call for the Great West, especially UCD and Cal Poly.
Look at the options:
1) play FCS football as independents and in the Big West (their ideal conference home) for all other sports
2) Decide to upgrade to FBS if after lobbying the WAC for invites, they get them. Would be the ideal geographic conference for both schools with SJSU, Fresno St and even Nevada nearby...that would make 5 schools no further than 350 miles from each other.
3) Lobby the Big Sky for invites. Would put them in the same region as Sac St.
It's a tough call. Each has pros and cons. FBS means they'll spend more money, travel more, with only 5 schools nearby. The Big West is the perfect conference for all their other sports, but has no football. And the Big Sky would mean the same type of travel as being in the WAC, but with FCS football...meaning football will never be a real revenue sports for UC Davis or Cal Poly.

AZ, how COULD you?
You're thinking too much in terms of football. In the other sports, what has, oh, say, UNC done that we haven't? Ten years of NCAA tournaments, some outstanding track, and a bunch of other stuff. UNC can't compete with that, yet you'd rather dump US and keep THEM?!?
Makes no sense, AZ.

Arguments like this come up often. But I'd gladly donate a pack of gum to the Big Sky, since that is about all they get in terms of revenue from the secondary sports. There are only 2 sports that have the potential to generate money for the Big Sky sports...which is why virtually every conference focuses only on those two sports when considering membership alignment.SuperHornet wrote:AZ, how COULD you?

That said, the Big Sky isn't kicking anyone out...it's a rarity in our litigation heavy society.

Nailed it. Every time someone starts talking about these sports and especially the women's sports it makes me fucking laugh. They ain't going away, and we have to have them but they are nothing but ho hums that bring little notoriety to the conference. Quit acting like they are some big asset to the conference...they are not.collegesportsinfo wrote:Arguments like this come up often. Re: Now what with the Great West?
Can one team leave the Great West without dissolving the conference? With one gone the conf would only have 4 schools unless they were to add another.
SUU would join the 'sky long before CP and Davis ever do. I think its safe to say SUU would love to join and get out of the great west.
Another question: Why do Sac St fans hate UC-Davis?

For the same reason Griz fans hate the Kitties, UCLA fans hate U$C, Cowboys fans hate the Redskins, Giants fans hate the Dodgers, etc. Close geography generates rivalry, and crazy happenings exacerbate that.weberwildcat wrote:Another question: Why do Sac St fans hate UC-Davis?

If you're basing that on the full conference membership ideology then I fully agree. If UC Davis, and CP were willing to be full members then I got a feeling that SUU would be third wheel in that scenario.weberwildcat wrote:Can one team leave the Great West without dissolving the conference? Re: Now what with the Great West?
I started at Sac State in the fall of 2002 and we were already in the Big Sky. I think I read somewhere that Sac State was in the Big West but when they dumped football the Sac State administration had the foresight to look for a home for the football program which led to getting an invite to the BSC. I think this was in 1996. I don’t think the two schools will ever be in the same conference in the near future unless “the farm extension” grows a pair and makes a push to join the BSC as a full member. The other only way it could happen is if the BSC allows football only member and Sac State somehow moves all its other programs to the Big West. The last possibility is if the two schools end up in the WAC someday. I don’t see either of the possibilities happening anytime soon.weberwildcat wrote:have the 2 schools ever been in the same conference? maybe they will be soon.SDHornet wrote: The schools are a stones throw apart.

The two schools played together in the D2 NCAC for many years and AWC for a few years before Sac went to the Sky.

If SUU were to play football in the Big Sky i would want them to be a full fledged member of the sky. In terms of competitive teams we field several and our football team is getting better every year. I personally feel that the Sky should have come asking for us instead of Northern Colorado but cant do anything about it now.

finally somebody remembers my NCAC!! For a long time it was SFSU, Sonoma State, Sac State, Cal Davis, Humboldt State, and Chico State... Nevada was in there for a long time, as well. Those were heady days!

You are leaving out Hayward State! It was originally called the Far Western Conference I think they changed the name to Northern California Athletic Conference about 1980. It was Division II, non Scholarship. I think that Nevada left about 1970 so they could give scholarships and ended up in the Big Sky. Good league, lots of local interest, all schools aside from Humboldt within about 200 miles of each other.

Re: Now what with the Great West?
Why? Whats the benefits of Southern Utah University? Northern Colorado isnt great but what makes Southern Utah more deserving than Northern Colorado? They both sucked at the time and they still suck. Concentrate on building a winning tradition & quality facilities bc thats what Southern Utah lacks the most.SUUTbird wrote:I personally feel that the Sky should have come asking for us instead of Northern Colorado.
Northern Colorado
Cal Poly
& UC Davis
have all steadily improved their facilities... leaving SUU in the dust.
So has
UM
MSU
EWU
WSU
CSUS
PSU
& NAU
for that matter. Again, leaving SUU in the dust.

Re: Now what with the Great West?
Oh eff me of course, i knew i forgot somebody, how could I forget SF State's ultimate rival! Even though we always liked to pretend it was Davis (everyone in the NCAC wanted a piece of the Aggies, they were the class of the league from the '80's on), in the Bay Area it's always been the triad of SF-Hayward-Sonoma, all right next to eachother like 25 minutes away. Hell, Hayward even changed their name to 'CSU East Bay" just so that the bay area rivalry would be more intense.Green Laser wrote: You are leaving out Hayward State! Seriously that conference was so perfect! All the schools in northern california, mostly CSUs, and all basically right next to eachother so essentially everyone was everyone else's rival school! Long live the NCAC!

Re: Now what with the Great West?
Looking at this map.. why aren’t EWU, UM, MSU, PSU, ISU & UI guaranteed to play each other every season? Rivalries are 99% regional/ based on proximity. Cal Poly/UCD/Sac St - WSU/SUU/NAU. That BigSky North/South setup might be best after all. UNLV should join The BSC like Idaho, & Northern Colorado should go back to DII.weberwildcat wrote:http://www.egriz.com/grizboard/viewtopi ... =1&t=43881" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
