I disagree. I think that it's extremely important that we show "staying power." I think it's extremely important that we show that we don't worry about how long it takes.

I don't think we'll do it, but I think that's what's needed because we are dealing with an enemy such that its only hope is to outlast us...to be more persistent. We, as a nation, have shown that we have no patience in war. We've shown that we need a quick, clean ending or we freak out and want to quit.

Until we do something to show that we're not like that we have no shot against this enemy.

Unfortunately, we ARE like that.

This is incorrect. What we as a nation have no patience with is undeclared war on nonexistent opponents. If you want war, get Congress to declare war, appropriate funds, and destroy the enemy. No more of this chickenshit back door fascism where we get a Patriot Act forced upon so we can "stay free" from "Terror".

Maybe. The problem with that scenario is that the Marines typically do the job better, and their strategic placement in the Department of the Navy always engenders jealous feelings. It wasn't too long ago that the Army tried to absorb the Corps. The problem with THAT, of course, is that the American people would never allow that.

How many people on here have actually read the Rolling Stones article? Here it is:
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/17390/119236" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is all there is that is damning that McCrystal said:
-"....Now, flipping through printout cards of his speech in Paris, McChrystal wonders aloud what Biden question he might get today, and how he should respond. "I never know what's going to pop out until I'm up there, that's the problem," he says. Then, unable to help themselves, he and his staff imagine the general dismissing the vice president with a good one-liner.
"Are you asking about Vice President Biden?" McChrystal says with a laugh. "Who's that?"...

-"....At one point on his trip to Paris, McChrystal checks his BlackBerry. "Oh, not another e-mail from Holbrooke," he groans. "I don't even want to open it." He clicks on the message and reads the salutation out loud, then stuffs the BlackBerry back in his pocket, not bothering to conceal his annoyance."

-As far as what he said about the Ambassador Ikenberry, a former 3 star, what he said in his leaked cable sounds worse than the one quoted remark McCrystal said about him:

"....By far the most crucial – and strained – relationship is between McChrystal and Eikenberry, the U.S. ambassador. According to those close to the two men, Eikenberry – a retired three-star general who served in Afghanistan in 2002 and 2005 – can't stand that his former subordinate is now calling the shots. He's also furious that McChrystal, backed by NATO's allies, refused to put Eikenberry in the pivotal role of viceroy in Afghanistan, which would have made him the diplomatic equivalent of the general. The job instead went to British Ambassador Mark Sedwill – a move that effectively increased McChrystal's influence over diplomacy by shutting out a powerful rival. "In reality, that position needs to be filled by an American for it to have weight," says a U.S. official familiar with the negotiations.

The relationship was further strained in January, when a classified cable that Eikenberry wrote was leaked to The New York Times. The cable was as scathing as it was prescient. The ambassador offered a brutal critique of McChrystal's strategy, dismissed President Hamid Karzai as "not an adequate strategic partner," and cast doubt on whether the counterinsurgency plan would be "sufficient" to deal with Al Qaeda. "We will become more deeply engaged here with no way to extricate ourselves," Eikenberry warned, "short of allowing the country to descend again into lawlessness and chaos."

McChrystal and his team were blindsided by the cable. "I like Karl, I've known him for years, but they'd never said anything like that to us before," says McChrystal, who adds that he felt "betrayed" by the leak. "Here's one that covers his flank for the history books. Now if we fail, they can say, 'I told you so.' "

So a total of 3 quotes that came from McCrystal. Thats it. That doesn't sound like much to me. The rest was from aides who were described as :
"The general's staff is a handpicked collection of killers, spies, geniuses, patriots, political operators and outright maniacs. There's a former head of British Special Forces, two Navy Seals, an Afghan Special Forces commando, a lawyer, two fighter pilots and at least two dozen combat veterans and counterinsurgency experts. They jokingly refer to themselves as Team America, taking the name from the South Park-esque sendup of military cluelessness, and they pride themselves on their can-do attitude and their disdain for authority."

If you read the 7 page article, the guy is described as a hard charger who came up through the ranks of the Rangers and SF. Described as a very intelligent, hard charging fighter who speaks his mind, but isn't much of a politician, but neither were many of the famous US generals from the past like Grant, Patton, and MaCarthur.

Might as well get used to it, dawg. Neither Congress nor Americans have the stomach for actual WAR, nor for destroying the enemy. It's not politically expedient. What we've had since Viet Nam is pretty much what we're stuck with from now til eternity.

This is damning. McC's problem was giving Rolling Stone fly-on-the-wall access for the article after getting called on the carpet earlier this year by Obama - that's just breathtakingly reckless behavior on his part. And those 3 quotes show a completely unacceptable contempt for his superiors - even if he feels this way he can never show it publicly.

I agree. Even if the statements aren't as egregious as described in the press. I too think Biden is an idiot who talks before he thinks and I don't hesititate to say it. But I am not a general under the command of the executive branch.

Yeah, he never should have given any press access like that to him and his staff, or made the comments, at least about Biden, as Biden is certainly a superior. Holbrooke and Ikenberry weren't superiors though. If anything, Ikenberry is a subordinate, and Ikenberry started it with the leaked cable.

I was just trying to point out that the comments, as GFU pointed out, aren't as egregious as described in the press. The damning comments are all made by his staff, which I realize he is responsible for.

:ohno: I was told by somebody who was at Okinawa, a Navy guy, exactly the opposite. He said marines were always getting cut off and surrounded because they moved too fast, then would have to hold on until the Army cleared the area. In his opinion every marine at Okinawa owed his life to the 7th Army.

And I was told by a guy who interrogated prisoners in Iraq that the Iraqi's always knew who they were shooting at because when they shot at an Army detachment in ran for cover and when they shot at Marines the Marines immediately turned towards the source of the firing and eliminated the source. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

It I had to go to Afghanistan today, and was offered either an Army infantry company or a Marine rifle company for my security...I'd take the Marines each and every time...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but Petraeus as head of Centcom was McCrystal's superior. Now Petraeus is being demoted to McCrystal's position, and will be subordinate to whoever takes over for Petraeus as head of Centcom. So Petraeus is being demoted to take over in Afghanistan. Odd.

You have a better chance of being hit by lightning. :coffee:
Might as well get used to it, dawg. Neither Congress nor Americans have the stomach for actual WAR, nor for destroying the enemy. It's not politically expedient. What we've had since Viet Nam is pretty much what we're stuck with from now til eternity.

At this point I'd settle for knowing who the enemy is. Hard to destroy "terror". :ohno:

During WWI, the Marines were under the command of the 2nd ID. Battle of Okinawa, the 7th ID kicked much azz. Lets not talk about Korea or Nam.

Abizaid
Fallon

Petraeus

What does this illustrious list of CentCom commanders (since 2000) have in common (with the exception of Fallon)?

All ARMY generals.
