Defensive Star

Post by green&gold75 »

You are the new FCS football coach. Your defensive unit has no particular strengths, or weaknesses either. You have the option to pick up a game changer--absolute best in the nation at his position. Without thought to your defensive scheme do you select ?Linebacker, ?Tackle, ?End, ?safety, ?CB.

that described Southern's defense last season. the jags were 8th in the league against the run and 2nd against they pass. they had a great safety who made 10 picks last year. But teams were able to run the ball and control the clock. so if I had my choice I'd prefer a playmaker on the line, if he can disrupt things just enough it'll give everyone else a chance to make plays. maybe force some third and longs instead of third and shorts.

Defensive Tackle- Hardest position to recruit at the FCS level. If you can get a game-changer at DT, you're a big leg up on building a strong defense. Really good ones are hard to find.

I agree, there's nothing worse than watching any team just plow right thru your line, all game long.

Big run stopping tackle. He'll make your average linebackers better.

When you say game changer...Defensive End is the first thing that comes to my mind

NT. A game changer at this spot changes the way the offense plays.
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

In this order
DT - a solid DT will eat up lineman creating holes for LB's and other DL to get through
CB - with a DT shutting the run down they will look to pass. With a good corner that doesn't always need help over the top defenders free up
DE - create panic in the QB's mind
FS - dude who can cover the entire field and make up for missed bumps and what not by CBs
then the rest.

I'd go with a dominating defensive end that could really rush the passer.
