National team injury updates
National team injury updates
Since so many of our projected World Cup starters have been injured, I thought I'd do a weekly update about where they are in recovery. I'll try to list guys who have been capped in the last year, so guys like Marcus Tracy or Mike Grella won't be included.
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, AC Milan) - Injured knee last November against Costa Rica, has begun training again with the club. Likely to return by April. Also important is the loss of Nesta to torn knee ligaments, and he is out for the season. But do Milan risk a shot at the scudetto with an out of form defender?
Stuart Holden (broken leg, Bolton) - leg broken in Holland friendly, underwent surgery to have a plate put over the fibula while it heals, is in a cast, and likely needs to wait 5 weeks for the cast to come off. Expected return mid-April.
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) - had his final surgery at the beginning of February to fix his elbow, has begun physical training back with Sochaux and hopes to begin training with the team sometime in the next week or two. He is expected to get into games sometime in April. Very good interview from the Sochaux site (in english):
http://www.fcsochaux.fr/en/index.php?op ... Itemid=106
Benny Feilhaber (ankle, Aarhus) - rehabbing in Rio de Janeiro, will spend one more week there, and hopes to begin training again with Aarhus shortly after. April return seems likely.
http://www.soccer365.com/us_national_te ... 233213.php
Jermaine Jones* (broken leg, Schalke) - broke his tibia in preseason training, underwent surgery to repair it, and has been suffering from hairline fractures and pain since then. Former German national team player dropped by Löw, is eligible to play for the US via his American father and a FIFA ruling allowing a one-time national team switch. He has not played at all this year for Schalke, and needs gametime to be selected for the US. He and his coach have said in German media that it is unlikely he will play at all this season. Interview with Schalke's coach, Felix Magath (in german):
http://fussball.zdf.de/ZDFsport/inhalt/ ... 56,00.html
Healed and returned to playing:
Clint Dempsey (knee, Fulham) - returned to action this week against Juventus in the Europa League and Manchester United in the EPL, will be gamefit by the time the World Cup starts.
Freddy Adu (hamstring, Aris) - hamstrung kept him out of the Holland friendly and missed Greek Super League game that Saturday. Made the bench against today against PAOK, but did not enter the game.
Steve Cherundolo (shoulder, Hanover) - not much information available about injury or return
Ricardo Clark (calf, Frankfurt) - returned last week, making the bench against Schalke, lack of fitness has kept him out of that game and this week against Hanover.

Re: National team injury updates
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, AC Milan) - Training with Milan, but conflicting reports this past week say he is either out for the season or will return in a month. Impossible to tell right now.
Stuart Holden (broken leg, Bolton) - Leg seems to be nearly healed, had cast and crutches removed earlier this week. He is expected back within a month.
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) - Back in France, and began training with Sochaux. He is also expected to return to playing within a month.
Benny Feilhaber (ankle, Aarhus) - Therapy in his native Brazil is finished, and has also resumed training with his club. He is expected to begin full practice within a week.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/s ... index.html
Jermaine Jones (leg, Schalke) - Some improvement, he began practicing with a ball this week. It is still unclear if he will appear for Schalke, and by extension, the national team, this year.
http://web.mlsnet.com/mls/gsc/article.j ... &fext=.jsp
Jozy Altidore (hamstring?, Hull City) - an unfortunate addition to this list. He suffered a supposed hamstring injury shortly before Hull's game against Portsmouth yesterday and will undergo scans tomorrow for a full diagnosis.
Jay Demerit (back, Watford) - Another addition to this list. He was sidelined before Watford's game with a non-specific back injury. This is an unfortunate setback for him after suffering a corneal abrasion this past winter.

Re: National team injury updates
You might want to specify in your thread title WHICH National Team you're talking about. One could list literally DOZENS of US National athletic teams, not the least of which would be the national women's football team that is the #1 seed in the inaugural World Championship this June and July in Sweden.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Is is really that hard to figure out which one he's talking about from reading the first few lines of his post? I can't believe you actually took the time to type out such a petty gripe. Hell, I can't believe I took the time to call you out on it.SuperHornet wrote:You might want to specify in your thread title WHICH National Team you're talking about. List them, then.SuperHornet wrote:One could list literally DOZENS of US National athletic teams

Re: National team injury updates
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, AC Milan) - Not training with Milan, in LA this past week for a checkup with the doctor who did the surgery on his knee. At Milan he had been training with another group of injured players, including Pato. Given the initial time table of six months, is it possible Gooch is behind schedule in his recovery? Is a loan to MLS the best chance for him to get game fit?
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton) - Other than him talking about training on Twitter, I couldn't find anything this week, so I assume his recovery is on schedule.
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) - His recovery continues, and has set a target date to return three weeks from yesterday.
Benny Feilhaber (ankle, Aarhus) - training and recovery continues in Denmark.
Jermaine Jones (leg, Schalke) - No updates here either, so I assume he is continuing training with nothing remarkable either way.
Michael Bradley (broken nose, Mönchengladbach) - Suffered a broken nose last week, and combined with yellow card accumulation, sat out this week. Should be back next week.
Returned to game action:
Jozy Altidore (hamstring, Hull) - injury was much less severe than initially thought, played today 79 min yesterday against Fulham drawing a PK and assisting on Hull's other goal.
Jay Demerit (back, Watford) - his injury was also much less severe than first thought, and went all 90 against Middlesbrough

Dammit...hijacking one of the few soccer threads we get on CS (URSUS, COME TALK TO US ABOUT SOCCER!!!!) is probably not in my best interest.
Re: National team injury updates
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, AC Milan) – Training with Milan, hopes to begin training with the full team shortly.
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton) – Training, is targeting to return either April 13th at Chelsea or April 17th at Stoke.
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) – Training with Sochaux, is targeting to return May 5th or 8th (in French):
http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves20 ... 8-mai.html
Jermaine Jones (leg, Schalke) – His World Cup dreams are over. Jones can’t even run at this point, his club season is over. Currently fearing for his entire career (in German):
http://sportbild.bild.de/SPORT/bundesli ... oggen.html
Brian Ching (hamstring, Houston) – Will be out for several weeks, but will get an MRI sometime later this week. Given Ching’s history with recovering from injury, it puts his WC hopes in jeopardy. He is likely our third string striker, and our best option for a target forward if something happens to Altidore. With Ching out, is Conor Casey on his way to South Africa?
Tim Howard (thigh, Everton) – Wasn’t sure if I should include him, he is still playing but can’t take goal kicks. I assume a strained thigh would heal in a few weeks, so I don’t really worry about this being a potential issue for the WC.
Returned to action:
Benny Feilhaber (ankle, Aarhus) – Fully fit, returned to game action Wednesday in a sub appearance against Esbjerg. Played again today against Randers.
Michael Bradley (nose, Mönchengladbach) – The broken nose didn’t affect him, nearly went the full 90 against Stuttgart.
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton) – Training, is targeting to return either April 13th at Chelsea or April 17th at Stoke.
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) – Training with Sochaux, is targeting to return May 5th or 8th (in French):

Re: National team injury updates
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, AC Milan) – Milan has said they don’t know whether or not Gooch will return this year, and that he hasn’t begun full training – still with another group of recovering players.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/ ... 901&ver=us
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton) – Hopes to begin running this week and training the next, has targeted May 1st at Tottenham for his return.
http://www.sport.co.uk/news/Football/36 ... eback.aspx
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) – Worked this week combining fitness and training, targeted return of May 8th at Bordeaux.
http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/1614/ame ... ies-return
Jermaine Jones (leg, Schalke) – Found nothing new this week, so I’m assuming the worst.
Brian Ching (hamstring, Houston) – out 4-6 weeks, putting his return mid-May for the Dynamo and maybe a week before the games against Turkey and Czech Republic. Will likely need to rely on reputation for a WC spot.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/s ... index.html
Clint Dempsey (thigh, Fulham) – Not thought to be serious, missed Thursday’s Europa League game against Wolfsburg and today’s game against Liverpool. Could be back this Saturday against Wolves.
Carlos Bocanegra (groin?, Rennes) – Other than this little French blurb (I guess touché aux adducteurs means adductor, or groin, strain), I haven’t seen much on him – injury, severity, time missed, etc.
http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves20 ... roupe.html
Edgar Castillo (knee, Tigres) – apparently injured his knee two weeks ago against Toluca and is still out. Haven’t seen anything to suggest when he will be back or the severity of it.

Re: National team injury updates
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, AC Milan) – training with Milan, ESPN had some update but since it was in their Insider crap, like hell I’m going to pay to find out.
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton) – Making good progress in training, May 1st at Tottenham is targeted return date, but this Saturday versus Portsmouth is an outside possibility.
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) – Training, still targeting May 5th for return
Jermaine Jones (leg, Schalke) – Met with national team doctors in LA this past week, no real progress yet. Season seems over.
Brian Ching (hamstring, Houston) – began light training and jogging, hopes to be back in two weeks.
Clint Dempsey (thigh, Fulham) – recovery going well, is expected back Thursday for Fulham’s Europa League match against Hamburg.
Carlos Bocanegra (groin, Rennes) – working out with conditioning coach, possible return in the next couple weeks.
Edgar Castillo (knee, Tigres) – Was expected back this week against Atlante, but did not make the bench, likely will be out another week.
Jay Demerit (knock, Watford) – Left after 56 minutes against Leicester City with a “knock”, no other details available.
Jimmy Conrad (calf, Kansas City) – Injured calf after 32 minutes against Seattle, no other details regarding severity or length of absence available

Re: National team injury updates
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, AC Milan) – Finally training with the first team. Video:
http://milantime.acmilan.com/it--allena ... -0-11385-0
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton) – Upped the intensity level of training this week, will begin full training tomorrow or Tuesday, return this Saturday against Portsmouth is possible:
http://www.bwfc.co.uk/page/General/0,,1 ... 06,00.html
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) – Club president has said Davies will not play for them this year, Davies and coach disagree. Bradley has said regardless of club playing time Davies will be given a real shot with the national team.
Jermaine Jones (leg, Schalke) – No real updates, but this article sure seems like Jones is pessimistic about his future. He talks about how he can’t hope for any gametime until he is fit, and that is a long ways off. He also says he understands if Schalke brings in a destroyer to replace him, amplifying the concerns about his career being over (in German):
http://www.spox.com/de/sport/fussball/b ... nbein.html
Brian Ching (hamstring, Houston) – returned to training, expected back within a week or two. Possible dates May 1st vs. Kansas City or May 5th vs. Dallas
Edgar Castillo (knee, Tigres) – No update
Jay Demerit (abdominal, Watford) – Will miss the rest of Watford’s season, but with that only being one more game, it’s not so bad a loss.

Jimmy Conrad (calf, Kansas City) – No update
Returned to Action:
Clint Dempsey (thigh, Fulham) – Played 38 minutes last Thursday against Hamburg and went the whole 90 today against Everton

Re: National team injury updates
Oguchi Onyewu (knee, Milan) – made the 23 man traveling roster for Genoa today, but did not make the game day 18. Last game of the season is next week versus Juventus at the San Siro, meaning it is unlikely Gooch will get any game time until camp.
Charlie Davies (car crash, Sochaux) – Not selected for the bench Saturday against Bordeaux, last game of the season is next week against Auxerre. He claims to have no trouble with the ball, but admits his off-the-ball decisions are lacking:
http://www.yanks-abroad.com/get.php?mod ... nt&id=6272
Brian Ching (hamstring, Houston) – made the 18 against Chivas USA, but did not enter the game.
Carlos Bocanegra (abdominal injury, Rennes) – some sort of abdominal pain, didn’t play or make the bench Saturday
Returned to Game Action:
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton) – played last 26 minutes of today’s game against Birmingham, Wanderer’s season is finished.
Jimmy Conrad (calf, Kansas City) – went the full 90 against DC United last Wednesday
Season Finished:
Jermaine Jones (leg, Schalke)
Stuart Holden (leg, Bolton)
Edgar Castillo (knee, Tigres)
Jay Demerit (abdominal injury, Watford)
The preliminary 30 man training camp roster is expected to be released Tuesday.
