In Hamels' defense, this is the same Nats team that just yesterday chased Johan Santana with 5 runs in 5 innings. It's not as if the Nationals can't hit (they can) they just can't pitch worth a damn.

With that said, Hamels has a habit of pitching himself into trouble. Giving up a leadoff single, then hitting the next batter, striking out the next two, giving up a 2 out sinlge to plate one run, then walking the 8-hole hitter only to have the pitcher double and clear the bases is just a bad inning that happens all too often.

At least this year we have Castro to fill in for him and not Bruntlett. And besides, this team is so loaded losing a Rollins isn't going to cripple this team. I mean, we're not the Mets for crying out loud.

Not to mention, IIRC, Jimmy slumped in the spring last year and the team ended up just fine.

I'm more concerned about the starting pitching (after Doc).

All true, pitching will determine how far the Phils go into October. Otherwise, if there are 3 certainties nowadays it's death, taxes & the Phillies offense.

Watch out for the Atlanta Braves, Phillie fans. They are a serious threat.

The Phils are a 90 win, minimum, team, with a decent shot to win 100 games this year. The Braves are certainly the second best team in the division and a quality ball club, but if the Phils take care of business they win the division going away. The Phils are better than they were last year, and the year before.

NL East shaping up early as a snoozer, as the rest of the division languishes at .500 or lower.

No official word just yet, but the MRI was done and it looks like 15 day DL for J-Roll. Better to rest that puppy in April than aggravate it.

J.A. Happ to skip at least one start after MRI reveals muscle strain in his throwing arm.

Other than Doc, I'm officially concerned about our pitching. At least Hamels had a solid start on Sunday, a day game no less (remember him pouting about day games last year). We really need Blanton to get back to 100% so we can get Kendrick or Moyer out of the lineup. They are both officially shit at this point. Middle relief doesn't look too bad. Madson is a going to be a season-long Jekyll and Hyde.

Keep on hitting, boys! We saw this weekend what happens when you don't score a gazillion runs.

Nice early season series versus the Braves starting tomorrow. As much as I kidded someone earlier in the thread, I do consider the Braves to be a legitimate threat in the NL East this year.

What a difference a week makes. Now, 80% of the division is .500 or better and the Phils have a half game lead.

It'll be a 3-way with FLA and ATL all year. And I share your concern about our pitching.

If Moyer or Kendrick can't get people out, once Romero comes back what are the chances of throwing Tony the Bastard in the mix??

I have to go to bed early 'cause I'm in court tomorrow, so I hope I don't jinx Kendrick during a game in the 8th inning, but he has looked phenomenal tonight. :thumb:

Here's hoping he steps up and takes over the #5 starter spot for good.

Madson proved last year he's no closer, but last night takes the cake. OK, you make a mistake to Glaus after freaking walking Chipper. The last thing you want to do after making it a 1 run game is throw Heyward a pitch he can take out. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Letting Glaus get to you is just sad - that guy is pretty much done as a legit major leaguer. But then again, we all know that Madson doesn't have the makeup to be a closer - he proved that more than a handful of times last year. I say keep him in the 7th and 8th, and just put anyone else in to close other than him until Lidge gets back.

On the bright side, Kendrick corrected things nicely, and with Halladay being Halladay and with Hamels looking infinitely better than last year, it's not as bad as it seems. Blanton will be back and hopefully Happ is just missing a start or two. Didn't see anything out of the Braves last night that would worry me over a whole season. Just got to keep Madson out of the 9th - he can't handle it mentally.

Just went back and caught the 9th (and 10th) on DVR. So, Madson looks brilliant getting the first two outs in the ninth. FOR FVCK'S SAKE, don't walk the third batter. Make him hit the God-damned ball. Throw strikes. Don't walk him. That got the whole damn mess started. :ohno: After that, his location was terrible.
