No Spring Game For JMU
According to the Harrisonburg Daily News Record. Also 3 practices at UVGay and 3 at VMI (JMU's practie field is grass, as are all the local high schools and nearby Div III Bridgewater stadiums.
"....Nevertheless, most of JMU's practices will be held on the wet fields, with the trips to U.Va. and VMI sprinkled in to give the Dukes access to full-sized fields...."

Also from the CAAZone JMU page because of the stadium construction, JMU is looking into other options for off season workouts this summer and 2-a-days.

We didn't have a spring game last year because of construction, though we had our practice fields for spring drills.
Good luck there JMU

Didn't JMU just build a new track and field facility across the highway?
There's a couple full-size fields on that side of the road I think. Boot some of those non-revenue sports off their fields for spring practice.....

What the cr@p is wrong with playing the spring game at a local HS stadium?
The spring game is traditional, and should be played NO MATTER WHAT. Of course, at Sac when I was there, it wasn't a true "game," just a scored scrimmage that took different phases of play into scoring consideration. It was still played, though, and should be EVERYWHERE.

LOL.
Something should be said for tradition. This one is great for the diehard fans and the players have something to play for instead of "just" another practice session.

Re: No Spring Game For JMU
Spring Games are geared entirely toward the fanbase and do essentially nothing for the team but waste a practice. If JMU's fans can't come to their own stadium, there's no use in having the "game".

Tough call ...
If I were a coach I'd be tempted to take a live scrimmage/practice against UVa as opposed to a convoluted Spring Game.
Cut the field in half and pound the heck out of each other - the guys might have fun with the 'Wack-A-Hoo'

UVA hasn't played us in almost thirty years. Why start with a scrimmage?
There are several places on campus where we could play a spring game, but none with the seating requirements. The soccer complex is natural grass, and the lacrosse/field hockey stands are smaller than my high school's. Our full-sized practice field has no stands at all. I seriously hope Bama hangs a hundred on Georgia St.

UD couldn't use the stadium field a few years ago and they decided to, for that one year, to play the Spring Game downstate in Delaware at a high school field. Kind of a way to reward fans from that part of the state who typically drive North to see the Hens. Wasn't the best venue in the world, but they still had the game.

Montana has done that in the past too, playing the spring game in Billings, I believe.GannonFan wrote:UD couldn't use the stadium field a few years ago and they decided to, for that one year, to play the Spring Game downstate in Delaware at a high school field. I remember something posted recently about Furman (I think) playing their spring game at a local high school as well.

None of those field are field turf. JMU will only have one game on grass I think- @ VT. All the home games and @ Towson, @ UR, @ Nova and @ Maine will be on turf. So I guess Mickey wanted to get some practices in on turf. Lexington and Charlottesville are both only about an hr from Harrisonburg.danefan wrote:Didn't JMU just build a new track and field facility across the highway?

For the 9 practices at JMU they'll be using the grass practice field which is beside the baseball stadium. I always assumed it was at least 120 yards long, as that used to be where the soccer team played their games up until around 97' when they got the new stadium across the interstate. Not sure why the article insinuated that wasn't a full size field.

I think UNI played 7 starters total in last years spring game, and none of them played much.

That I don't buy. Practice on grass 6 months before your first game isn't going to make a god dammed differenceBDKJMU wrote:

TXST will play the first team O against the first team D. Next series will be the 2nd team O vs 2nd team D. Controlled scrimmage but with officials.clenz wrote:This.Libertine wrote:Spring Games are geared entirely toward the fanbase and do essentially nothing for the team but waste a practice. We have like 80 or 90 guys at spring ball.CatMom wrote:TXST will play the first team O against the first team D. Next series will be the 2nd team O vs 2nd team D. Controlled scrimmage but with officials.clenz wrote: This.

Why play the starters if you know who they are and what they bring. Our spring game is usually seeing who is fighting for the back up/special teams/ next guy in role.
This year may be different though with the number of people we lost.

Re: No Spring Game For JMU
Oh, I don't know. Maybe to see who is still in shape, or better at their position than last year, or who will challenge the returning starters, or who is hungry enough to lead the team to a conference playoff run? This is in a semi-game setting that I am referencing.clenz wrote:We have like 80 or 90 guys at spring ball.CatMom wrote: TXST will play the first team O against the first team D. Plus, it's a good time to start to get the fans a little excited, in some way, or form, in the upcoming season. I, personally, want to see the guys that are coming back and see how the redshirts are fitting into the scheme of things.
I know it's spring drills but they can also be very telling

The annual spring game is the start of Alumni-fan base fund raising. Not playing a spring game someplace is a lost opportunity to juice up the people that write checks.

Having the new stadium come online by 2011, with all the hype and progress updates, will more than make up for losing the spring game in juicing up the alumni base.jd of de wrote:The annual spring game is the start of Alumni-fan base fund raising.
