Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
I don't know if any of these schools would move up but I'll throw out Virginia St or Virginia Union (CIAA). Or maybe Ft. Valley or Albany St.(SIAC) just my very amateur opinion

I was looking at wikipedia for size $$. Bowie St., Albany St., Morehouse, Fayetteville St. looked like the best options. Most of those schools would have to add sports. VUU is a great basketball school but very small. 1,200 students.

Not sure any could afford the move-up now.
Maybe they will take Longwood
Maybe they will take Longwood
Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
My understanding is that the MEAC is HBCU's, though. Longwood's about as lily white as you can get in Virginia.

Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
they'd have 11 for fb if they did that. the CIAA took Chowan non HBCU, but they have football.

Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
glad to hear about SSU. I do think the MEAC will expand to 14, 13 seems a little odd.

the other question is who is leaving???
The CIAA Commish has intimated that he is talking a D1 school
who is thinking about dropping back to D2.

Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
This is really shocking news. The last thing I would suspect the MEAC to do was allow SSU membership at this point in time. There is no way the MEAC is this desperate for membership. I'm surprised the NCAA hasn't given the entire SSU athletic department the death penalty. There is some really major turmoil going on right now in Savannah.

Very interesting. SSU could use the help but it seems like MEAC wouldn't want them

Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
Congrats Tigers!!!
Although being a 13 member conference (11 in football) is a little weird, and I don't even know it would be feasible...it seems that the MEAC has two options here. Add another football playing school, or drop one of their current members.
I'm gonna be starting a rumor here, but I have a feeling that the school that the CIAA has been talking about is Howard...

Since when has the CIAA been talking to/about Howard? I heard that if they get another it would be Benedict or UDC if they could ever get their act together which they might not. Only board talk so it could all be bullshit.

Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
The CIAA commish has been quoted of saying that they are looking at adding a 14th member that is in their current footprint. He also talks about the benefits of being a D-II over D-I. From the looks of it, on the surface the quickest answer would be that it will be a MEAC school. Hampton and Norfolk State both left the CIAA in the late 90s and seem to be doing well so I doubt that they would consider it...Howard on the other hand...Fresno St. Alum wrote:Since when has the CIAA been talking to/about Howard? UDC is in their footprint, no football and always getting busted for cheating. So is W.Virginia St. now that Lincoln(PA) is in CIAA. WVSU would have a lot more travel if they left the WVIAC

Re: Savannah State joining MEAC
I looked at the D-II map. UNCP is in their footprint non HBCU like Chowan. Benedict is just outside the footprint along with N.Greenville(non HBCU) and of course UDC.DSUrocks07 wrote:The CIAA commish has been quoted of saying that they are looking at adding a 14th member that is in their current footprint. NGU, UDC are IND. UNCP plays in the PBC (no football). Benedict in the SIAC
