Saw 3 Baseball previews at lunch, all 3 had the Phillies in the WS vs either the Yankees or Red Sox.

That is really not a difficult prediction to make. If the Phillies stay healthy, there is no reson to think that they should not return to the World Series. Of course staying healthy is a pretty substantial "if" - look what happened to the Mets last year.bluehenbillk wrote:Saw 3 Baseball previews at lunch, all 3 had the Phillies in the WS vs either the Yankees or Red Sox.

Of course, the Phillies are also deeper and better than the Mets at almost every position so the Phils are better equipped to handle long term injuries. That and the fact that the Phils actually have a competent medical staff means they are way ahead of the Mets!SunCoastBlueHen wrote:That is really not a difficult prediction to make. Sure they will. With Troy Glaus at first and Chipper in a wheelchair at third, how can they not???DJH wrote:Braves will win the East.

They do have the pitching staff... though they traded Vazquez and Soriano... and picked up Wagner and Saito. I don't know why you would let LaRoche go and pick up Glaus, I guess you are paying these guys less... but what did you do with the money your saving? Spent $12 million on contracts for Saito, Wagner and Glaus... contracts for Vazques, Soriano and LaRoche totaled around $23 million plus for last season. You guys have the money to work with, but you're spending it on garbage washed up MLB players making their final go-round... probably trying to keep with the theme of next season: "Bobby's Final Lap"
The outfield is better... but Melky and Diaz aren't that big of an improvement.
Braves are in shambles. I will be there to wish Bobby Cox farewell as the Phillies give him a goodbye thumping for his final home series at Turner Field.

Some J-Roll quotables from today:
On who is better: Roy Hallada or Johan Santana?
“Well, Roy is, as far as pitching is concerned,” Rollins said. “Now, you bring in the hitting side of things, and Santana gets the nod. There’s no doubt about that. I mean, Roy can’t hit. There’s no secret there. I texted Roy prior to getting down here and told him he has my vote for National League Rookie of the Year already.”

The scalpers will be making out like bandits at tomorrow's ML spring opener. Doc's debut against C.C. and the Yankees...93henfan wrote:Let's kick some Seminole ass tonight, boys.
I'm sure that one was sold out right after tickets went on sale.

It's been tough to get Spring Training tickets for losts of places recently (or at least until the big housing bust in Florida). I went to a Twins/Reds game in Ft Myers two years back and they sold out within 3 hours of going on sale. And that's with the Red Sox in the same town competing for the same customers (and they were even harder to get). With the Phils new ballpark down there, and with them being as good as they are for several years now, I'm sure every Phils game is a tough ticket. And of course the Yanks must be an impossible to get ticket down there.SunCoastBlueHen wrote:The scalpers will be making out like bandits at tomorrow's ML spring opener. Re: Charlie Manuel Watch Thread - 2010 Edition
Well, the scalpers can't make a living down here trying to sell Rays/Lightning/Bucs games, so the month of March is a big one for them. When the Yankees or Red Sox are in Clearwater, there are literally scapers on everywhere surrounding the ballpark and getting 2x plus face value. I paid $45 last year to see the Phillies and Sox.GannonFan wrote:It's been tough to get Spring Training tickets for losts of places recently (or at least until the big housing bust in Florida). There are actually ony G.A. tickets left for the Phillies / Rays on Sunday. That used to never sell out.

I'm hoping I won't have any problems catching the Phils @ the Braves at Disney the week we're there. The stadium at Disney is almost 10K seats, so I'm thinking I'm good.

Phillippe Aumont's debut line with the Phils vs. Florida State:
IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
.2 2 5 5 3 1 1 67.50
Phils win 13-6. Game called early due to the 'Noles running out of players.

Ah, I know it's only preseason game one and they may only go a couple of innings, but Halladay vs Sabathia is going to be fun to watch today.
Palm trees. Drool...
John Daly threw out the first pitch. Yikes! He looked better when he was fat and drunk. He looks like a pissed-off raisin now.

Is it on TV there or do you have the MLB.tv package?93henfan wrote:Ah, I know it's only preseason game one and they may only go a couple of innings, but Halladay vs Sabathia is going to be fun to watch today.

BTW, you may see palm trees, but it ain't much warmer here that it is there. All the same, I would love to be at Brighthouse Field right now.

Re the weather, the players were wearing jackets in warmup and are wearing long sleeves under the jerseys, so I believe you. Looks pretty windy too. You can tell the people that are on vacation, because they have shorts on. The locals are bundled up pretty good behind the plate.
Halliday had a good first inning. He got a ground out from the leadoff hitter, second hitter reached on Polanco's wide throw (E5) to first, K'ed Posada, and fourth hitter popped to right. The Yankees are playing a lot of non-regular starters, as are the Phils. Howard is sitting.
Rollins grounded out, Polanco singled to left, Francisco FC, Werth BB, and Mayberry popped out to right.

Halladay
That boy's good. Rings up Swisher and Winn to start the second and gets third guy (missed name) to ground weakly to second.

Halladay done after two, as are my updates.
3 Ks, 0 hits given up for Halladay and retired his last five batters in a row. Looked as good as advertised.

Brighthouse Field has 7,000 fixed seats and lists a maximum capacity of 8,500.
Today's paid attendance for the spring opener - 9,866.
That's a full house.
