The reign ended in 2008 but another one could be starting in September of 2010!

Teams rise and fall in the SoCon...it was Furman in the mid to late '80s, then it was Marshall in the early mid-90s, then GSU in the late '90s/early '00s, then App. State from 2005 to today.
The length of App's reign is pretty much at the life expectancy of a SoCon dynasty.
Who will be the next big SoCon team?

Elon finished ninth in the Final FCS Poll. Hey, why not? The Griz haven't played Elon yet, not as I recall. Maybe it's about time.Pwns wrote:

Griz would destroy us. Griz and App are comparable programs now and we haven't beat App in over 50 years. I'd love to see the game though.WyomingGrizFan wrote:Elon finished ninth in the Final FCS Poll. Hey, why not? The Griz haven't played Elon yet, not as I recall. Maybe it's about time.Pwns wrote:

App will be solid next year. Jackson could be a very special player and the supporting cast is there if the QB situation is settled early. With only five hole to fill and with what we have coming back...I feel good about this season.

Not quite. The Teachers College is pretty good at recruiting what they need when they need it.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Re: APP'S REIGN IS OFFICIALLY OVER!
True. I like our chances this year, but we've already fallen off a bit from 2 years ago & I think that trend will continue, albeit slowly. Factor in the looming specter of Moore's retirement & it spells for a fall from the top. But the sign of a good stable program is how far the fall is & how soon they are competitive if not winning the conference. Will we be a Furman (not on top, but near it year in, year out) or a Ga South (no smack, but their fall has been pretty far considering their stature at turn of century).Pwns wrote:Teams rise and fall in the SoCon...it was Furman in the mid to late '80s, then it was Marshall in the early mid-90s, then GSU in the late '90s/early '00s, then App. State from 2005 to today.

So we go undefeated in the conference last season, go to the semi-finals and come within one play of getting to the National Championship, and we are falling off a bit? In 2008, we go undefeated in conference again, and lose to eventual champion Richmond (who you have to admit wanted revenge badly after what we did to them in 2007). Hmmm....come on now Appa....

Re: APP'S REIGN IS OFFICIALLY OVER!
Poor, poor Appalachian.
They don't stand a chance. The Mountaineers are doomed. Please take pity on them.
30k fans? They'll be lucky if they get 1k. When thery shut down the band it will be much less. The plan is to replace the band with an 8-track boombox from the early '70s. The only tape they have is Kool and the Gang 'Celebrate Good Times'.
Moore is old and time has passed him by. I heard that Appalachian will have to play 7 guys 'both ways' on offense and defense. When #14 graduated 75% of the team gave up and quit. App will have 6 former cheerleaders and 2 band members to fill the void.
The bank has repossessed the stadium improvements, torn down the stadium and sold the steel for scrap (including the 'free weights'). All home games will be played on the fields at State Farm. Instead of 'The Rock' the new name for the field is 'The Flood Plain'.
The good news is they sold their pads, helmets and cleats for gas money (the Mountaineer players will be carpooling to away games). They also got a great price on the old used equipment from ETSU. The bakesale almost raised enough cash to wash the equipment.
It was a nice ride while it lasted ---- thank goodness for the memories and all the loving support from the CAA. Sorry about those thumpings in Chatty.

Re: APP'S REIGN IS OFFICIALLY OVER!
Good, valid points...guess what I meant was we seemed more one-dimesional in last two years...if Armanti wasn't on, we lost or won because we were playing Western. Sure, that's an obvious sign of a spoiled fan, but even you gotta admit the SoCon was weak as water this past year & if we play Elon earlier in the year, good chance we lose bad....& I'll admit my earlier statement was hyperbolic at best in light of actual facts. They played well at end of year, but I'm worried about life after Armanti....CharlestonAppFan wrote:Appaholic wrote:

Re: APP'S REIGN IS OFFICIALLY OVER!
I agree with you about being one-dimensional, but I think that may have been because we relied on AE to do everything and did not exactly play as a complete team until later on in the season...could be because we were pretty young too though. But that does show what kind of leadership we had/have on the team as well.Appaholic wrote:Good, valid points...guess what I meant was we seemed more one-dimesional in last two years...if Armanti wasn't on, we lost or won because we were playing Western. The SoCon was weak these past couple of years but don't downplay the effort by every team. I don't think any team, other than Elon last year, had a lot of starting seniors in the conference...not that that is an excuse.
