I will forever call them TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY - SAN MARCOS because of this. It goes back to protecting the name of Sam Houston State and making sure people realize that the school is the same school it has always been and surely not flagship. I spent plenty of time protecting the name of my alma mater and personally coming up with the language of the legislation that eventually passed in the Texas Legislature.

The fight still continues as long as there are some idiots in San Marcos who continue to push for flagship and there are individuals affiliated with 'The Drive' that have made derogatory remarks about the schools and the academics of the schools in the SLC.
Darling, you know I don't care about all that.

C'mon TT you know this isn't the accepted name for Appalachian State University, you persist to use that term even though ASU posters told you that wasn't acceptable. CatMom should make a thread about you. :coffee:

Wow, there probably isn't more than a handful on this board that would get that reference. Long time since the '58 Colts.

I actually think the accepted nomenclature is ILS and INS, even tho our fanbase throws a giant hissy over it.

We had a fan of the University of California Davis flip his lid about the whole UCD, UC-D, UC-Davis, UC Davis, Cal Davis... thing. To this day I still can't recall which one is preferred by them. A sure fire way to make sure people use the wrong one is go off on somebody about using the wrong one.

BTW, I usually use Cali-D.

Not sure if these were mentioned, but there are two that I usually use incorrectly but nobody seems to complain...

South Carolina State is really SCSU but I usually use SCSt

Northwestern State is really NSU but I always use NWSt

I've saw so many different ways to do it

ISUR, IlSU, IlSt,IllSU, etc...

ISUB, InSU, InSt, INS, etc...

Basically, having two teams in the same conference with the same name lay out (ISU) is a pain in the ass.

Simple solution, move Indiana St to the OVC where they belong.

Let's be realistic... how many times does anyone ever even mention Indiana State? ;)

Try having two teams in the same league with essentially the same nickname, the only difference being a space or lack thereof. It was that way in the CFL for decades with Saskatchewan and Ottawa.

According to the MVFC media guide (at least the 2009 edition):
  • ISU or ILS -- Illinois State is the principal identifier for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Illinois State University. ISU is the preferred abbreviation, however, ILS is used to differentiate from league member Indiana State (which also uses ISU).
  • ISU or INS -- ISU is the preferred abbreviation for Indiana State University, however, INS is used to differentiate from league member Illinois State (which also uses ISU).
  • Missouri State -- The institution’s official name “Missouri State University” is a reality as of Aug. 28, 2005. Missouri State will work in the first reference in a news story, and MSU is an acceptable abbreviation in subsequent references and statistical listings. SMS, Southwest Missouri State and versions of SW Missouri should no longer be used.
  • NDSU or ND State -- NDSU is the primary abbreviation for North Dakota State University, while ND State has been used for tickers, scoreboards and television broadcasts.
  • UNI -- It’s University of Northern Iowa on first mention, UNI thereafter. Please do not refer to UNI at any time as Northern Iowa, and it’s not NIU, which is commonly seen. We thank you for your consideration.
  • SDSU -- SDSU is the primary abbreviation for South Dakota State. South Dakota State is the preferred abbreviation on the second reference.
  • SIU -- SIU is the preferred abbreviation, however, SIUC is also used (differentiating it from SIUE, which is the abbreviation for the Edwardsville campus).
  • W. Illinois -- The Western Illinois Department of Athletics prefers that Western Illinois be used in references to athletics programs. When an abbreviation is necessary, W. Illinois is preferred. WIU is not acceptable.
  • YSU -- YSU is a suitable and preferred abbreviation for Youngstown State University in news stories and broadcasts.
I was surprised to see that "WIU is not acceptable" considering how much the school itself uses it. But then UNI sometimes uses "Northern Iowa" itself too. so who knows.
