Ranked in FCS and Basketball

Post by Bostonspider »

I was wondering how common it is to have been ranked both in FCS Football and in the NCAA AP Top 25 Basketball Poll in a given year. I know that Villanova has obviously been ranked very highly in both this year, and UNI was ranked for a time in each poll, and now Richmond has joined the AP Poll at #25, following being ranked all year in football. Any other schools this year? Or in years past? SInce most schools in the FCS are in mid-major or lower conferences, it must be a tall order to be ranked in both.

Interesting question.

Villanova has done it in the past, and as you mentioned, UNI has done it in the past as well.

I think SIU was ranked in both a couple years ago.

Probably a couple teams before moving to I-A... WKU and UConn come to mind.

Did a little checking and it looks like UConn was ranked in Football in 1998 Season (Lost in the second round to G. Southern), and then won the NCAA Basketball Title in 1999.

Some potential for SBU to hit a ranking in both over the next couple of years. Dominating the America East conference in basketball with a team only due to lose 2 players total this year (top players are 3 soph, 1 senior, 1 jr and bench goes 10 deep). Football seems to be an emerging power as well, with potential ranking this year with a conference sweep.

The AEast is going backwards in basketball as a conference. SBU will be lucky to not be in the PIG this year. It will take a ridiculous season with huge OOC wins for an AEast to even sniff the bball top 25.

RealtimeRPI still has six conferences below the America East, so you are safe :)

um, when was the last time that any america east team was ranked in bball? I honestly don't know. You may have a decent basketball team, but decent in the america east conf =/= top 25 in the country.

I don't know. My guess is Vermont gets votes from time to time (for example the year Vermont upset Syracuse in the tourney), and I'm relatively sure Albany garnered a few. AEC usually ranks in the dead center amongst conferences, so our leaders will get votes, but have a hard time cracking the poll without a substantial win streak. To answer danefan, I don't believe this is a downward trend for AEC. We simply didn't rank well because our #1 team has a 300+ SOS and UMBC/Albany had abysmal seasons. However, all signs point to rebounds from those teams, and my guess is SBU has a strong slate planned. Unlikely we'll be in the play in game if we make it. As recently as last week ESPN had SBU matched as a 15 seed against Duke. SWAC/PL seems to the the flavor this season.
