Rate your program

Post by clenz »

I'm looking for a star ranking like NCAA video games, 1 star being lowest and 5 being the highest. Oh and NDSU fans you aren't a 5, heck you are lucky to be a three right now. Heck rank the whole conference and each team

I feel like there are going to be a lot of responses claiming 4 and 5 star rankings... Honestly, Montana and Appalachian State are probably the only teams that can unquestionably claim 5* status assuming we're not going back too far in time (which is what the game does). A few of the CAA teams could make claims to a 5* with pretty solid arguments (JMU, Delaware, Villanova, Richmond and *maybe* UMass) since they've won a title recently and have made a few other playoff runs. I would obviously listen to an argument for Georgia Southern and Youngstown State based upon the number of titles they've had, but both teams struggled quite a bit in the latter half of the decade which would put a damper on it.

How I see the Big Sky:
5* Montana
4* None
3* EWU (though a case could be made for EWU having a 4 star...but a few bad and mediocre seasons + no trips past the second round this decade make it tough for me to go higher, they're definitely #2 in the Big Sky though and I can understand the argument for 4*...I see them as about a 3.5), Montana State, Northern Arizona, Weber State
2* Portland State, Sac State
1* Idaho State, Northern Colorado

Maybe I'm a little lower than some people would go for the Big Sky teams but by my criteria (which i just made up off the top of my head while i was typing this out) there would only be about half a dozen 5* teams in the entire nation, and probably not very many 1* programs either, with the vast majority being in the 3* range. Feel free to pick it apart!

I'd have it more like

5 - Montana
4 - None
3 - MSU (Their title leans them toward 3.5, but they haven't been consistent enough lately), EWU, maybe WSU....I'd give them a 2.5...
2 - Idaho State (They've won a title, and used to be pretty damn good, despite their abysmal showing lately), Portland State (I'd more give PSU a 1.5)
1 - Sac and UNC

SoCon

Appalachian State: 5 stars.
Furman: 4 stars. (They've been down the last 3 years and are bordering on moving to a 3 star program)
Georgia Southern: 4 stars. (They've really been struggling recently. But, I don't know how you could rate a team with 6 championships any lower)
Wofford: 3 stars. (They're solid but, have a particularly poor fanbase)
Elon: 3 stars. (They're on the rise)
Samford: 2 stars. (They've been competitive since they're arrival)
The Citadel: 2 stars. (Seem to always have potential but ends up in disappointing...but, never an embarrassment)
UTC: 1 star. (Showing promise)
WCU: 1 star. (An embarrassment)

sorry, I have to step in now because that's utter BS. pound for pound we are as good a fanbase as anybody. We only have 1500 students and about 20,000 living alumni so I think it's safe to say we're not going to sellout the stadium every game and it's not because of a lack of commitment but because we have way less fans than anyone else

I know Wofford is small. Its not a shot at the quality of the people. But, this isn't a pound for pound discussion.

So Clenz, what timeframe are we rating?

I would give Delaware three different star ratings for:

"Right now"
"Past 10 years"
"All-time"
Delaware Football: 1889-2012; 2022-

All-time, the Fightin' Blue Hens get about as solid a 5 as you can get.

There aren't many FCS programs with a resume like this:

639-412-44, 118 seasons, 4 head coaches in a row with national championships, previous three were all inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame, 20,000+ crowds for five decades or so
Delaware Football: 1889-2012; 2022-

In that case, I would put JMU around a 4*. We don't have the history that a lot of other 5* programs do, but we've had some recent success, a national championship and produced a few NFL players.

If we were going by recent season, we were a 3* team last year, maybe 3.5 by the end of the year.

I agree fan base has to be relative to the resources one has available. This isn't a knock but if you have a school with 15,000 students that gets 25,000 to a game and a school with 1500 that gets 7500, which one is doing a better job of attracting fans. Certainly 25,000 makes for an exciting venue but 6 times the student body is impressive.

I think most Furman fans would say that we are down around 3 right now. We aren't GSU, or Montana or more recently ASU from the standpoint of reputation, but we are still historically one of the strongest programs in FCS and we are spoiled. However, when you compare us to most of FCS we would probably still be close to a 4.

Sorry, but hell no. Although the current state of our program isn't good, historically ISU is higher than a 1 star. We're better than Portland and Sac St, and more on par with NAU and Weber. We have a Conference Championship in the past decade (PSU and SAC have never had one), and we have a National Championship to our credit, which is something most teams don't have (I believe Montana has 2 and MSU 1).

I'm not claiming we're a 4 or 5 star program, but we're at least a 2 star.

No NAU?

Last ten titles/co-title

2000 Montana
2001 Montana
2002 Montana, Montana State and Idaho State
2003 Montana, Montana State and Northern Arizona
2004 Eastern Washington and Montana
2005 Eastern Washington, Montana and Montana State
2006 Montana
2007 Montana
2008 Weber State, Montana
2009 Montana

Obviously Montana is there every year - 5*
Montana State has 3
EWU has 2
NAU, ISU, WSU each have 1
PSU, CSUS, UNC have zero

Liberty a solid 3 star program with two big south championships and a share of last years confrence title. We average 15,000 fans at our stadium. We have sent several players to the NFL in recent years and had a RB Rashad Jennings drafted to the Jags in the 7th round in 2008 draft.Samkon gado has a decent season with the packers and holds franchise rookie records for most rushing yards and TDs for a rookie. We are in the process of building state of the art 30,000 horeshoe style stadium. We also have a solid, loyal fan base. And were on the rise.

Hey now MN! If you consider the good old Norfolk Division team, we're 71-21-4 all-time, with a four-point loss to Miami in the predecessor to the Orange Bowl. 74% all-time winning percentage isn't too shabby IMO :thumb: !!!

That's fair, I wasn't going off of all time ratings alone, I heavily weighed recent years (the last 10 or so). Looking at it again this morning I like uofmman's better than mine, as it is more representative of both recent and more distant history.

"IF" and notice i am saying IF, liberty pulls out a season like a lot of people are expecting then after thisnext yr id say there a 4 star team. "expectations" being 17,500-18,000 avg attendance per game, POSSIBLE 11-0 season movingon to the playoffs, PROBABLE 10-1 or 9-2 season still moving on to the playoffs beating EITHER Ball State or JMU but ive got my money on Ball State. i dont have a warm and fuzzy about beating jmuthis yr but who knows. all the tougher conference games are at home and we have a more than great chance of winningthe big south out right this yr. and like u said we've got the new stadium rolling in which isgonna be AMAZING. CoachRocco has absolutely done amazing things to liberty football. just amazing.

Yea, because if crowds are the big thing...SWAC teams are 4, 4.5

How supporters of a team that has never been to the playoffs...or been beyond the first round if they made it...say they are ANYTHING above a 2 is a laugh...or just pure homerism.... :twocents:

My MEAC rankings (Prestige, Location, Coaching, History):

5 Star: None
4 Star: None
3.5 Star: SC State, Florida A&M (I would have FAMU slightly ahead of SCSU due to their history and name recognition)
3 Star: Hampton, NC A&T, Bethune-Cookman (Historically good MEAC programs)
2 Star: Delaware State, Morgan State, Norfolk State (Low-end programs with recent success)
1 Star: Howard, NCCU (NCCU is a n00b, Howard has falling so far that it isn't funny anymore)
MEAC, last one out turn off the lights.

If we were rating our teams using the same formula that the NCAA Football games uses for FBS teams then I would have Grambling, Southern, and Jackson St. all high threes, Prairie View as a solid two and a half, and everyone else either two or one.
