Future JMU vs CAA.
Wondering if posters who have seen FCS programs move to FBS would know: assuming JMU moves to FBS at some future date, would they be happy/willing to play old CAA foes in their season openers?

Big Sky move-ups:
Idaho played several Big Sky teams in the years after moving up - winning and losing to them.
Nevada lost to Weber in there two years in I-A, split with Boise (Boise was still in I-AA at the time).
Boise also played a number of Big Sky opponents after moving up.

"Assuming" was an introduction to a hypothetical question--nothing more. As I'm sure you've seen, it's a move prophecied by multiple other posters in other threads. For me, just a "wondering" question (bored at work, I guess).DukeJack wrote:Why would you assume that we will move up?

I would be incredibly upset if this happened, but would think that JMU would be happy to host former CAA-mates, particularly the Virginia schools. The caveat would be that we'd have to get a couple of years for our extra schollies to kick in, otherwise there's not a whole lot of advantage in making a payout.

Re: Future JMU vs CAA.
If the money is right, and they feel they're at a level where they wouldn't be in danger of frequently losing that game, why wouldn't they play anyone from the CAA? In terms of anyone holding grudges, the only other team that's been a member of both the football conference and the CAA for a long time is William & Mary, so that's probably not a factor. UConn waited 6 years before they played a CAA team again after moving up if that's any measure, though they started scheduling FCS opponents within the first 3 years.

Nova = He!! No
UR = No, not even @ UR.
W&M = No, loss would be embarrasing, and hurt recruiting.
UNH = No, how many FBS teams have they beaten in a row. He!! no.
UD = Maybe, if it's xfer QB's 1st year.
Maine = Maybe, if in rebuild mode
UMass = Maybe, if in rebuild mode, and has new HC.
URI = Yes, assuming URI stays the same.
TU = Yes, assuming TU stays the same.
ASU = He!! No.
Montana = He!! No.
JMU = FBS, really???

Re: Future JMU vs CAA.
Why would anyone bother to speculate about something that isn't happening?
It would be just as likely to ask if W&M would play JMU is season openers when they move to the ACC. Silly.

I like the way you think green&gold!...James Madison >>> Big East ....I can dream about it.
James Madison University --- Better than you since 1908...
Re: Future JMU vs CAA.
Fair enough. Our administration has been quite adamant that we will not be jumping - but if the Big East or ACC offered us, they would take it in a heartbeat. So, we will not jump just to jump - we need a viable power conference with a definite offer to do so.green&gold75 wrote:"Assuming" was an introduction to a hypothetical question--nothing more. And as far as your hypothetical? I think another more southerly school is more inclined to jump just to jump and with their 70k seater, I'm sure they'd love to put 60 on us patsies.

I believe the Tribe was the first D1 team to play JMU back when they were a D2 program (1978). W&M was 1A at the time. You'd think JMU would return the favor.jstclmet wrote:W&M = No, loss would be embarrasing, and hurt recruiting.

You've got to understand the source on that one...
Seriously though, I think JMU would be happy to play any of the Virginia FCS schools, but as somebody else said, they would want to have plenty of time to develop their extra scholarships and increase the likelihood of winning (then again, how many years did UVa have???
And the ridiculousness of the assumption that JMU would move up has already been pointed out, but I'm just rolling with G&G75's assumption. It's the off-season.
Re: Future JMU vs CAA.
No chance for ACC or Big East...MAC would be only entry level option.

No. Threat of losing to former foes too large for anyone moving up.green&gold75 wrote:Wondering if posters who have seen FCS programs move to FBS would know: assuming JMU moves to FBS at some future date, would they be happy/willing to play old CAA foes in their season openers?

"October 14, 1978
JMU's Board of Visitors unanimously approved moving football to Division 1. The Board met in Williamsburg, where JMU lost 32-7 to William & Mary in its first game with an in-state Division 1 foe. JMU went to Division II in 1979 and to Division 1-AA in 1980."
While JMU played Davidson in 1976 in their first game against a D1 opponent, and were in Division III through 1978, my point stands.
