ESPN broadcaster Colin Cowherd will return to Eastern Washington University in April to serve as host of the 29th Annual Orland Killin Dinner, Dance and Auction, and has also pledged his support of the "Red Turf" project at EWU's Woodward Field.
Cowherd attended Eastern from 1982-86 before embarking on a more than 20-year professional broadcasting career. He was sports director of Eastern's on-campus radio station, and was a broadcaster for a variety of Eastern athletic events on both radio and television during Eastern's transition to NCAA Division I. He is formerly from the coastal town of Grayland, Wash., and graduated from Ocosta (Wash.) High School in 1982 where he was an All-Far West Conference guard in basketball.
He has pledged $50,000 toward the previously-announced addition of red synthetic turf at EWU's Woodward Field in Cheney, Wash., which will be the first of its kind in the entire country. Michael Roos of the NFL's Tennessee Titans and his wife Katherine pledged the first $500,000 toward the unique project. The Killin Dinner, Dance and Auction is presented annually by the Michael Roos Foundation, and Roos will also be on hand for the events taking place April 23-24.

You all want to claim Cowherd, go ahead. He does nothing but play the devil's advocate and slam virtually any topic he is talking about (almost as bad as Skip Bayless and Stephen A Smith). You never know where he stands on anything and sometimes he will show "support" for a cause if it will help his image. As a sports reporter, I put him on a level with Bayless and Smith, which is one step up from the garbage pile.
For him to say he supports the new red turf at EWU does the same thing for me as if Paris Hilton were to say the same thing. Nice but rather superficial.

Jeez, Jalmond did you have a run-in with Colin when he was in Portland?
He's not a reporter. He's a radio talk show host and ( like him or not ) a damn successful one who's affiliation with EWU will increase exposure and fund raising. Sorry you don't approve.
I have been a little disappointed that Cowherd does not give much love to the FCS, especially playoff time. He has the knowledge and the venue to give some support

This day and age, there is not much difference between a sports reporter and a sports talk show (and now, a show on ESPN). Cowherd has gone so far as to claim the Pac-10 as the weakest conference in the BCS, that the FCS is no more than a glorified DII affiliation (complete with a playoff system and FBS recruiting rejects), compared Appalachian State's win over Michigan to Azuza Pacific beating USC, that ESPN should not "waste" programming on any FCS coverage, and that scheduling FCS should automatically exclude a FBS school from contending for the BCS national championship, none of these by the way are backed up by any shred of fact from Mr. Cowherd. Better FCS discussion from any of these two FCS sites than there has been from Mr. Cowherd.

He won't slam frontrunners, Notre Dame or USC.
Colin is the biggest front-runner cocksucker I've ever heard.

You don't have to agree with everything he say's on his radio show to think he is entertaining. Yeah he is an elitist, and yeah he contradicts himself constantly. But I like his show, it's only entertainment, and he is funny.

Need I go on?
Advocating FCS football is not his job. Creating mass appeal for his radio program by being provacative is.
He's the sports talk version of Rush Limbaugh, complete with - as you suggest - outrageous opinions most of which are not "backed up by any shred of fact."

That is your opinion, and I respect that. My opinion, I get the same type and style of "entertainment" as I do from Paris Hilton. You have to admit, she is a lot cuter than Cowherd.

There are those who offer facts to back up their "outrageous opinions". Then there are the Colin Cowherds, Skip Baylesses, and Stephen A Smiths.

And he has also referred to competitive swimming as "floating fast". Even if I were a competitive swimmer and despite his lack of supporting facts to that statement, I would still think it's funny. As mentioned, he's an entertainer. And I'm still very pleased he's coming to the Killin Lobster Feed and Dinner Auction.

Fair enough. We'll see how funny he is when he's "poking fun" at the new red turf at EWU the same way he's done about Boise State in years past.

I would fully expect him too, and have no problem with that.

kalm, we get it. He's an EWU grad who's made it big. You can get off his dick now.

And he's going to kick in for the red rug...even as he ridicules it and FCS football...

Colin does not have to talk about the FCS - but he can talk about what ever he wants to. I have heard Scott VanPelt give better press to the FCS then Cowherd ever has..

Colin Cowherd is a piece of shit. For all of his defensive lectures about sports being entertainment and that ratings drive what they talk about on ESPN, he keeps forgetting that ESPN has the power to create what is marketable, profitable, and ratings-drawing by giving it attention. ESPN plugging the everliving daylights out of the Red Sox, Yankees, and Manny Ramirez increases the interest and audience in those entities. They can boost the profile of a team or athlete by giving that person extra attention. Of course, Cowherd only thinks in broad strokes and his canned speech about entertainment is ready to go; he can't resist the chance to portray himself as moral and intellectual superior. He's a shock jock who refuses to admit he is as such. He believes what he does is part of some greater good which he is reaching down to the cretins and blessing them with his insight. He's an insecure over-compensator. Fuck him and the soap box he lives on.

You think that the only reason that the Red Sox and Yankee's are as big as they are is because ESPN talks about them all the time? Hmmm....interesting.
