W&M loses two projected starters

Post by BDKJMU »

http://flathatnews.com/blog/39/press-box/72622

Never good news to lose multiple projected starters. One according to the article was the 2 yr starting LT who'd started 25 games.

I can sympathize, as last offseason season JMU lost 3 returning starters, plus a several from the 2 deep all for different reasons.

Academics, medical, legal, personal, NCAA postive test banned substance, graduating and electing not to return for their 5th year, etc. are all kinds of things that can cause teams to lose kids in the offseason.

I know W&M was gonna be the pre-season #1 for a lot of people, how much could this change that? Were these guys all-conference types?

As far as the pre season polls, who cares, they're for retards.

In the CAA of 12 teams, usually 15 OL get CAA honors. Eh, make that now 10 teams for next season.
Of the 7 OTs that got All CAA honors, 5 were seniors. All World Ijalana for Nova and JMU's Theo Sherman (3 yr starter, 2 time 3rd team) return. So I imagine there was a good chance that this W&M LT starting in his 3rd season would have been a likely candidate for 2nd-3rd Team All CAA honors.

This certainly hurts the Tribe. The offensive line looked like it might be a dominant group next year, and now loses a key member. Now must replace both the center, and left tackle. While there is alot of depth, the question shifts to how good they'll be, not whether they will dominate.

The safeties will now both be inexperienced. The speculation is that OLB Evan Francks may switch back to safety to fortify that group. W&M is loaded at LB, and can spare one for a shift.
Go Tribe!!!

well that earns respect for w&m from me. REALLY they coulda brushed w/e they did under the rug to keep them (depending on how bad wutever they did is) and played them. giving them the boot shows integrity. i like that.

I don't know much about the LB but Marcey is a huge loss if he does not return. I had him on my list of preseason All-CAA candidates for 2010. Based on the names I had the All-CAA first-team OL would have looked like this:
OT Ben Ijalana, Villanova
OG Brant Clouser, Villanova
C Drew Lachenmayer, Richmond
OT Theo Sherman, JMU
And yes I would have put Marcy from W&M in the last spot. It would have been Drew Moore from Hofstra but when they dropped football he left for EKU.

That's a bummer for W&M.. Nothing worse for a new quarterback than uncertainty at his blind side.

Really? Why would anyone have had W&M as a preseason #1 over nova? nova was better than W&M last year and even before this returned much more than what W&M was returning. I think W&M is going to be pretty good this year, but a preseason #1 would be very optimistic to say the least.

Eh, I thought I remembered a lot of discussion on AGS about how W&M was returning the most talent. Maybe that was back when Sczczuczr didn't plan on returning.

In terms of # of starters returning Towson, Maine and UD have the most.

Next grouping would be Nova and JMU

Next grouping would be W&M, UNH, UMass

UR has the least.

Not sure where URI falls.

Preposterous IMO. Losing what most made last year's team special (defensive line), and starting a new QB. No way we should be anyone's preseason pick.

I actually thought UMass might have lost just as much as Richmond, and UMass obviously wasn't as good as Richmond last year.

And I really thought nova is returning more than UD - but if you say so.

UR started 14 seniors to UMass's 12. Yeah, both lost a lot of talent. 7 of those 10 UMass seniors got All CAA honors ( 1st team Ducasse, Zardas, Cruz, and Miles), 2nd team Nelson at TB (who I believe was a 1st teamer in 08') plus a couple of DLs who were 2nd and 3rd team. So technically UMass might have a couple more starters returning, but yeah it looks like UMass lost as much as UR.

Going by the listed 2 deep I saw Nova and JMU both returning 15.

UD (from the game notes from the JMU @ UD game) and Maine @ JMU both returning 18 of 22. Plus I know Maine got one of HU's starting DLs, and Turcotte back. I heard you guys might have Macorelle? back. Towson showed only 5 seniors starting vs JMU.

On terms of guys who are known impact players, got All CAA honors, etc, yeah, Nova probably returns the most, including the 2 most likely Concensus AA.

Wow - I had no idea that UMass had 7 All-CAA honors this year - just didn't come across as a very good team this year at all (much different than prior years UMass teams that were pretty good).

UD's number is in flux with Macorelle - however, even if he comes back he's like Eric Lindros in that he's so unlucky and just can't stay healthy. The big one, however, would be if Baker comes back at TE - he was going to be a real difference maker before he tore his ACL without contact (just tried to stop and his leg gave out) in punt coverage against West Chester in the first game of the year.

Make that 9 got All CAA honors. I was just referring to the seniors on the 11 offenseive and defensive positions. They had an a soph LB get 2nd team and their kicker (a Sr) got 3rd Team.

Gotta remember, the CAA, as usual, was VERY liberal in giving out the honors. 11 on offense, 11 on defense, a kicker, a punter, a kick returner, and punt returner, there should only be 25 on each team x the 3 teams = 75 positions. Well, they gave out All CAA honors to 94 positions. Take 1st team D for example- there were 5 Dls, 4 LBs, 3 safeties, and 2 corners, 14 players.

Here was the breakdown:
-UR 16

-JMU 9 (11 positions)
-UMass 9
-UNH 8
-UD 7
-Maine 5
-HU 4
