Re: 2010 Big Sky predictions.
1) UM - it is a machine that has a ton of talent returning at quarterback, running back, wide receiver. They replaced most of their oline with JC transfers and a massive 6-8 330 OT freshman recruit. They also picked up Oregon's key reserve at defensive tackle. I think that their offense will be more explosive due to playcalling and more aggressive on defense with their change in coordinators.
2)MSU - biggest reason is that they basically return their whole offense except right guard, and their whole defense. The biggest change on defense will be at outside linebacker and maybe middle linebacker depending on whether their starter returns from last year. This team should make the playoffs.
3/4) I see a two way battle between NAU who probably has as much talent as anyone but totally collapses the second half of the season for the last 5-6 years. Eastern Washington biggest question will be their quarterback position otherwise they are fairly dangerous.
5) Weber State - Weber will always be a tough physical team but they lost a ton of talent of graduation and Higgin is very erratic.
6/7) Sacramento State/Northern Colorado - Both improving a lot each year but have not been able to consistently win. They are both talented teams that need a few breaks to come their way.
8)Idaho State - I have a lot of respect for Coach Zamberlain and how hard his team played last year. They played a ton of young guys and lost a ton of players to injury last year so I expect a battle from them
9) Portland State - Have no clue. They have talent on that team but know nothing of what they will run.

Re: 2010 Big Sky predictions.
I can't wait until spring ball to see what SMU transfer Bo Levi Mitchell can do. He's a good fit for our offense, and knows our coaches (we recruited him heavy out of HS, and almost came here). His numbers should definitely get better against weaker competition than he was facing in C-USA. I think it'll be a matter of only needing him to manage and not lose games rather than win them for us with Taiwan Jones in the backfield (and on turf!), much like the first half of this last year for the Vikes with Favre and AP.bpcats wrote:1) UM - it is a machine that has a ton of talent returning at quarterback, running back, wide receiver. Re: 2010 Big Sky predictions.
Portland State will be reverting the now famous "Pistol" Offense run at the University of Nevada (Reno). This offense is all about speed and is a very hard hitting offense. Portland State did run a little out of the pistol this year it is true however now that they are reverting to it for the base offense it is going to be very effective. Nevada led the nation this year in rushing yards (even more then all the Triple option teamsbpcats wrote:9) Portland State - Have no clue. On the defensive side of the ball the Vikes will be reverting to a more basic 4-3 much like Cal Poly did which i think will have an immediate impact. From what i can gather the Vikings were not very good at stopping the run and this should help create more pressure on other teams QB's.
Overall I think that the Vikings could very well be surprise team in 2010 especially if they take to their offense quickly i could see them finishing as high as 4th or 3rd in the conference. Coach Burton seems like one of those dont waste my time coaches and also since he was the Wolfpacks Defensive coordinator i think the PSU defense will get much better as well.

This is MSU from 2008 year. Last year they were a young team, this year they will have there offense returning and lots of experience. IF they fire on all cylinders they are going to be hard to stop. The other top teams in the big sky are loosing lots of players (WSU) including key qb's (EWU) and coach's (UM). MSU looks on paper to have the smallest amount of major changes and is adding good talent. They look like they will be a step ahead in there game plan so at this time it looks like MSU will be the front runner. If in spring ball they suffer injuries and or academic problems or just look like sh*# then the predictions will get revised.

If every Big Sky school would just spot the bungles 20 points every game ISU might stand a chance. The bungles will win one game this season but I am not sure just who the opponent will be.

I'm gonna put my beans on three wins for ISU; they'll win their D-II game, beat the new BSC doormat (PSU), and surprise one middle of the pack team for the "upset..." possibly NAU or Weber.lagneb wrote:If every Big Sky school would just spot the bungles 20 points every game ISU might stand a chance. Re: 2010 Big Sky predictions.
Idaho State should get better, but they still won't be good. I think Russell Hill is better than Kyle Blum, though, so Blum's departure may actually make them better.
UNC might be decent. They have steadily improved under Downing, albeit very slowly.
Montana should win the conference again.
EWU should be good again after bringing in Bo Levi Mitchell to replace Nichols.
I don't think Weber will make the playoffs since they lose their running backs. Higgins is too risky of a passer to survive without a running game.
MSU & NAU should be borderline playoff contenders (just like every year).
Sac may improve, but Jason Smith's apparent defection should slow their progress.
I have no idea how Portland State's gonna do. I doubt they'll be fighting for the playoffs (especially with 7 road games), but they have enough talent to avoid being terrible.

Retirement is NOT a defection, Venus. And progress slowed by said retirement when it could be argued that Sac's best success last year came with MBT under center? And one could factor in the presence of Baby Brother (though some of my Hornet cronies discount THAT).
Slowed progress? I highly doubt it, Venus.

Smith did have the better efficiency rating in '09. He also had more starting experience.

Re: 2010 Big Sky predictions.
After taking a look at Weber's new recruiting class, Weber will be good, thats all im going to say, Weber has a favorable conference schedule with some of the bigger guns at home, but do have some difficult road games with Sac, NAU and MSU (I would say ISU but.. Nah.) Weber could be a top 4 Big Sky team, and thats where I see them finishing at anywhere from 1st-4th.

You're right and we had 2 offensive coaches that were just fired this week. Our offense was pathetic while I defense was fairly sound.
