Looks like the Dawgs lost Roland Johnson DL Byrnes H.S. to WCU. Guess the Dawgs will just have to kick some kittykat butt again this season and show him he should have become a canine instead of a feline. LOL, congrats to all the signees for GWU and the other programs too, a nice reward for a lot of work and tomorrow, the work get's harder, the competition tougher cuz now you're a collegiate player. Hope GWU posts their full list soon.

Hot off the presses. Looks like another good class for Gardner-Webb.

GARDNER-WEBB FOOTBALL ANNOUNCES 20-MAN RECRUITING CLASS ON NATIONAL SIGNING DAY

BOILING SPRINGS – National Signing Day was fruitful for Gardner-Webb University’s football program, as 20 student-athletes signed to play for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Head coach Steve Patton and his staff targeted the Southeast heavily, with 19 of the 20 signees hailing from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. The Runnin’ Bulldogs inked 12 players who played high school football within a two-hour drive of campus.

One signee, cornerback Terrance Thomas (5-11, 170) is already enrolled at Gardner-Webb and started classes in January. The speedy Thomas, from Pageland, S.C., led the state of South Carolina with 11 interceptions as a senior during the 2008 season – helping Central High to the Class 2A state finals.

The class was balanced, with 10 signees slated for offense and 10 for defense – although several in the class could wind up on either side of the football. Six were named All-State as seniors.

Gardner-Webb signed a pair of highly-regarded postgraduate players from Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy in linebacker Traneir Fraiser (6-2, 230, Florence, S.C.) and defensive tackle Maurice Dickson (6-4, 252, Hillside N.J.). Fraiser, who helped Florence (S.C.) Wilson High to a Class 3A state championship as a junior in 2007, was courted by a host of Football Bowl Subdivision schools.

Fraiser and Dickson weren’t the only teammates to sign with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.

Athletic offensive tackle Tyler Hough-Jenkins (6-4, 250), linebacker Sean Hubbard (6-1, 194) and quarterback Lucas Beatty (6-2, 198) helped Olympic (N.C.) High in Charlotte to the state playoffs in 2009. Juanne Blount (5-8, 185), an option quarterback who will play running back for the ‘Dogs, and Shrine Bowl cornerback Orlando Ratliff (6-0, 200) each starred at Forest Hills (N.C.) High. Blount accounted for 102 touchdowns during his high school career.

“We addressed some specific needs for our football program today, and this group is as balanced as we’ve signed in recent years,” said Patton. “We signed very good tackles on both sides of the ball, and added some very tough and athletic skill guys. Several of these young men had opportunities at the FBS level, and we are thrilled they will be suiting up for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. This is a class that will play a major role in our success over the next four years at Gardner-Webb. From top to bottom, all of these young men are gifted football players, and we were able to sign our top targets at a number of positions.”

I like the make-up of this class. Lots of speed at the DB positions, pretty good size in the OL/DL prospects, the TE Cranfill was looked at by a lot of FBS and FCS programs and I'm sitting here thinking the RB - Blount could be pretty special with decent speed, impressive strength for a 5'-8", 185# who squats 525 and elusive to boot. Our OL guys can just create a bit of a seam and this kid sounds like he could be off to the races. Welcome to all of the new Runnin Bulldogs. Anyone have a start date for spring ball?

That's a good looking group EagleDawg! I'm happy to see that GW has continued to build on our current roster and recent recruiting classes. It appears that the word is getting around that GW is a great place to play football and get a great education. Congratulations to our coaches for putting together another solid recruiting class. Congratulations to the new recruits and their parents - we look forward to meeting our new friends soon and we hope to see you at the Spring Game in April. Looking forward to a great 2010 football season - is it September, yet?

After giving our signing class a little research, I just wanted to share some more thoughts. First, it appears that our coaches have done an excellent job of filling spaces that were left behind by graduating seniors. We got a replacement QB for the outgoing Stan Doolittle. We replaced 3 graduating RBs with 2 more [This was one of our positions where we probably had more than adequate players]. We replaced 1 graduating WR with 2 more [and we can certainly use help at this position]. Replaced 3 DBS with 4 [this was certainly a huge priority for us as our lack of depth at DB last season likely cost us a couple of games]. We replaced 4 LBs with 3 more [LB is the one spot on our team where we seem to just be loaded]. Replaced 4 DLs with 3 more [and here's hoping Matt Goods makes it back next year]. And, we replaced 3 graduating OL with 3 new ones [With an new starting QB next year, the big uglies are going to need to be good]. We also picked up 2 TEs who at 6'3" and 6'4" are going to be able to provide solid blocking and a large near target for our young QB - whoever it might be.

Some more thoughts on this class:

Here's a good article about Tray Schley who was previously committed to Florida Int'l - http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2010/feb ... gardner-w/

Cory Phillips - interesting note. I checked out his Rivals site and he ran a 4.44 40 at their combine [a top 10 finish]. He also finished first in the pro shuttle. All of his film on Rivals shows him playing WR and he gets good separation from the HS DBs trying to cover him. He looks like a good candidate to chase after John Rock's [that just sounds like a QB doesn't it?] long ball. Keep an eye on this one. I don't konw if you will be able to view this video, but here it is - http://rivals.yahoo.com/video/recruitin ... a0c43a46fe

Ainsley Miller [DT] is another interesting prospect who was recruited by several FBS programs. Here is his Rivals video if you can view it. He is a big kid who can really get after it. http://rivals.yahoo.com/video/recruitin ... smFK2PtpB4

I am looking forward to watching this class develop and make their contributions to our team.

I love the fact we dipped into Florida and landed two stud players. Landing anyone from that powerful Armwood program shows we are making some major progress down that way.

Now let's get the QB situation in shape heading into the opener against WCU.

I'm really curious to see how that works out. Regardless of who gets the nod, you guys are going to be really young at that position.

GWU QB's young, yes but both have extremely strong arms and can make all the throws, short, medium and yes long. I see GWU stretching the field more next season and they have the athletes to get deep which should keep the safeties off out of the box more. Rock has a bit more experience and is probably a bit better on the run but Browning can really make all the passes and was a target for Maryland for a quite a while. It should be a great competition for the starting nod and I can see how both will get time early in the season.

Good Morning Dawg,

I agree that the QB showdown should be a good one and will make Spring Practice worth watching. Rock gets the nod for seniority, but, Browning is tired of riding the pine and believes he can make a difference. They will both get their opportunity to shine come March. Good to see that the coaches decided to wait until after Spring Break to start practice - this should give the boys lots of time in the S&C program to get bigger and faster. In the meantime, kudos to the girls bball team for beating Liberty last night and taking 1st place in the BS!

Good Morning ElCid83 - Yes, I like the set-up for Spring Ball as well. The S&C and the cafeteria must be working. I hear that my hog is a flea less than 280 and that Sarge is around 290. Will be interesting to watch them in Spring Ball and see if they have maintained their footwork with the added bulk. I hear Hudson has added about 10 to 15 lbs. as well. What's he hearing position wise. I 2nd the congrats to the GW Women's B-ball team, watched the game on SportsSouth last night and that was a gritty come from behind finish. If they can get by Radford in their snow make-up game they should have a decent shot to run the table in the regular season. Even with a loss they would own the tie-breaker against Liberty. We'll need to start thinking about the Spring Game tailgate before too long. Looking forward to seeing the gang again real soon.

What up fellow Dawgs!! Have you guys heard what the Spring schedule is yet? We are wanting to come up to watch some of the practice sessions. I'm sure Jacob will get some kind of notice from the Coaches. We can't wait to get started! I think the future is really bright and we are so proud to be a part of it. We need to spread the word about this site and get more fans involved!!!

Eagle, it looks like he is going to try out at LB during spring practice. He also wants to play FB if they decide to use one this year [which I hope they will so we can come up with some plays that may actually work when we are on the 3 yd line].

Big Dawg, Practice will start 3/22 or 3/23 and the Spring Game is scheduled for April 17. They usually scrimmage on Saturdays during Spring Practice.

Kenny, Glad to see you made it over here. Regarding the banquet, from the emails I got, I didn't get the sense that anyone other than Sr's parents were welcome. I know the emails said the parents could come - but, it didn't sound to me like she wanted you to come. I know Ms. Farina was trying to make it a special event for the players and she should be applauded. Personally, I'd rather see an event where all parents are welcomed - like they are at the high school banquets. Put the banquet in a large place at GW and invite all parents and fans and have a fun evening. If you are going, let us know how it goes.

I hear we have 3 unsigned visitors this coming weekend. One OL but that is all I know. All of them are kids that were hoping for something bigger to come along.
