An idea for the SoCon
1. Get rid of the three schools not playing football in the conference (Davidson, College of Charleston, and UNC Greensboro).
2. Add 3 SCHOLARSHIP football-playing schools.
3. Divide into 2 divisions like we do in basketball.
4. Schedule like the SEC (play the 5 teams in your division, and 3 from the other division on a rotating basis).
5. Have a championship game pitting the 2 division winners for an automatic playoff berth. (the loser may or may not receive an at-large berth)
2 questions-
Are you for or against this?
If you are for it, what 3 new teams could we go after?
I like Coastal Carolina for one of them.

Re: An idea for the SoCon
SC State would be a nice fit as well, though I seriously doubt that they would consider leaving the MEAC.
Liberty maybe? Jacksonville State?

Not for it. Davidson & CofC makes us a better basketball conference. With the addition of Samford we have 9 FB members which gives us 8 conference games. Plus I don't want to hear the whinin about not playing everyone like the CAA gets

I may be a little rusty on rules, but I'm pretty sure if you had a regular season championship game, both teams would be forbidden from playing in the playoffs, ALA the Gridiron Challenge and other conference championship games.
Could be wrong, though.

Chucktown and Davie add good basketball to the conference. Greensboro, on the other hand, I can see booting. Can't think of any sport that they are strong in.

That idea would work if the Championship game were played the 3rd Saturday in November, which means the regular season starts the last Sat. in August........uofmman1122 wrote:I may be a little rusty on rules, but I'm pretty sure if you had a regular season championship game, both teams would be forbidden from playing in the playoffs, ALA the Gridiron Challenge and other conference championship games.

Re: An idea for the SoCon
I don't believe it precludes playoff participation other than the 2 best teams (that might qualify) are playing at the same time the playoffs begin. The next best team(s) could be in if, by some miracle, they had the results to do so...or, one of the top 2 decided to ditch the Gridiron Classic and go the playoff route (which probably won't happen in my lifetime)uofmman1122 wrote:I may be a little rusty on rules, but I'm pretty sure if you had a regular season championship game, both teams would be forbidden from playing in the playoffs, ALA the Gridiron Challenge and other conference championship games.

Should absolutely boot those 3 teams. That was the reason for the Socon booting ETSU.

Re: An idea for the SoCon
I am against it for a couple of reasons. One, Davidson and CofC are typically some of the best bball teams we have...otherwise the SoCon would really suck in bball. Second, I don't want to get the SoCon stuck with 12 teams that are not all that strong.
Obviously, I would like to see bigger, public schools included...and Charlotte would be perfect (if they get the team together). Adding 3 teams now would preclude Charlotte from being able to join in 2013. At that point (assuming ASU and GSU are still FCS), then I would support adding Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, and SCSU (though doubtful).

Re: An idea for the SoCon
Better Idea. CAA convinces the northern schools to form their own league and brings VMI into the fold. The Citadel, Elon, Furman, Samford, & Wofford exchange places with Delaware, Ga State JMU, & ODU. Then CofC, Davidson, & UNCG joins the CAA. SoCon adds Jax State & Liberty while WCU finds a home in the OVC.
CAA Football: The Citadel, Elon, Furman, Richmond, Samford, VMI, W&M, Wofford.
CAA Basketball: The Citadel, CofC, Davidson, Drexel, Elon, Furman, George Mason, Samford, UNCG, UNCW, VCU, VMI, W&M & Wofford / two 7 team divisions.
SoCon: ASU, Del, GSU, Ga State, Liberty, Jax State, JMU, ODU, UTC All schools, except GSU (get to work Eagles!) have stadiums over 20,000 (pending JMU's and Liberty's expansion) and the potential to go FBS. With Charlotte's addition the SoCon becomes a 10 team league.

Re: An idea for the SoCon
This will never happen. For one thing, Wofford would refuse to leave the SoCon and join the CAA, beacuse there is no legitimate reason for the school to do so. I'm sure Furman, The Citadel, Elon, and Samford feel the same way. And isn't Wofford to Drexel pretty far to be travelling for a conference game?

Only about 150 miles more than Elon to Birmingham.woffordgrad94 wrote:This will never happen. 9 football playing schools is the perfect number.
That doesn't mean that I like 8 of the schools but it is still the perfect number

no way WCU should "just find a home" in the OVC.

Re: An idea for the SoCon
I think you both are correct in a way. I believe the conference would lose it's auto bid, but the #3 team would be eligible for the playoffs as an at-large... see the SWAC for example. Their #3 team is eligible, but I don't ever see a time when the NCAA would grant them a bid. I'm not saying their #3 couldn't possibly be worthy (although it seems that way now) but I don't think it would be wise for the NCAA to select the #3 team from a conference without having the #1 or 2. It would really make a mockery out of the championship IMO.CatMom wrote:I don't believe it precludes playoff participation other than the 2 best teams (that might qualify) are playing at the same time the playoffs begin.uofmman1122 wrote:I may be a little rusty on rules, but I'm pretty sure if you had a regular season championship game, both teams would be forbidden from playing in the playoffs, ALA the Gridiron Challenge and other conference championship games.
