EWU Picks up SMU QB Transfer

Post by TexasTerror »

This was posted on KatFans.com from PonyStampede.com...

SMU quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell will be transferring to Eastern Washington. The article lists EWU as an FBS school - got to love those PonyFans! ;)

Anyway, this is a great pickup for EWU. Mitchell had a very successful high school career and his stats as a true freshman in 2008 were pretty good at SMU. Guessing he comes in with two years of eligibility remaining
"I have talked to a few schools, but I'm thinking Eastern Washington at this time," stated Mitchell to PonyStampede.com. "They recruited me out of high school."

"Things haven't panned out. I have two years of eligibility left, and I could wait and see what happens, trying to get my spot back, or I could take up other opportunities. I also really want to play football with my brothers, so I'm trying to find them a place to."

I agree it should be a good pick up for EWU. I saw BLM live once and on t.v. a few other times and he throws a nice, accurate ball, but doesn't have the best arm. His biggest issue was that a few times every game he would just make an absolutely stupid decision and throw bad pick, he has 33 career picks in 19 career starts. Luckily for EWU that should get better as he matures.

I am guessing - based on the information available - that BLM is going to be up there for spring football. This bolds well for Eastern Washington.

The quote from BLM also shows how important it is for the FCS schools to strongly recruit guys who are getting offers for the FBS mid-majors. EWU is benefiting two years after the fact by landing a seasoned FBS quarterback who should be able to have some mileage at the FCS level.

There's going to be a LOT of competition come spring ball for the starting job. We already had RS Freshman Jeff Minnerly and Scott Burgett, true freshman Anthony Vitto, and a couple weeks ago we picked up a JUCO transfer Greg Panelli. 5 QBs, one starting job...

Quite a difference from when he played WSU as a Sophomore at SMU and when he played UW as a Senior at EWU.

No doubt. We're still benefiting from it.

If I recall one of the knocks on Mitchell was his decision making. Or lack of it. Sounds like Padron also has decision making issues. Mitchell turned out just fine in the end - and should be the same for Padron. EWU's coaching staff knows how to develop a top notch QB. Blankenship > Meyer > Nichols > Mitchell is no mistake. Tell me with a strait face you wouldnt want any of those guys leading your team.

And we haven't even gotten to the WR's that will be returning.

Great pick up. Having a great receivers surrounding a QB in a new system is a must during the first year. Looks like you guys are right back in the hunt again.
