With over 31 years of coaching experience and 22 on the collegiate level, University of Central Missouri offensive coordinator Charlie Stubbs was named Nicholls Football Head Coach, announced the Nicholls Athletics Department on Tuesday afternoon.
Pending the approval of the University of Louisiana Systems board, Stubbs becomes the ninth head coach in the program's history. Stubbs, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, has been an offensive coordinator at a host of schools over the last 14 years of his coaching career that includes six years as an assistant head coach.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to be here at Nicholls, and I am ready to face the challenges ahead. We have a lot to do in a little amount of time, and one of those things is to get to know all of my returning players. I'm looking forward to meeting those young men," said Stubbs prior to his press conference.

Why not try to catch someone falling down from the fbs level? Or maybe a Boise State-ish assistant?

Unless you want to hire a very young DB or WR coach from an FBS team, the Nicholls HC job isn't a financial step-up for most of the guys with enough experience to run a DI program, especially when you start talking about BCS teams.

I forgot to post that I read somewhere that Nicholls was going to pay its new coach less than $100,000.BlackFalkin wrote:point taken.

Thats what I would guess. They just don't have the state or athletic funds.danefan wrote:I forgot to post that I read somewhere that Nicholls was going to pay its new coach less than $100,000.BlackFalkin wrote:point taken.

I got a little nervous when I called CSU this morning and asked to talk to Coach Mills only to be told he is out of town. My first thought was, crap, he got the job. Glad he is sticking around.

Charlie Stubbs has plenty of experience on the FBS level, including time at Alabama, Oregon State, Tulsa, BYU, etc...he has a great resume and is plenty qualified...but what they should have done is hire one of a couple of guys with local ties to help with recruiting...Thibodaux and the Bayou Region is a very "cliquish" community and don't take to outsiders very well...it'll be interesting to see how the local high school coaches take this hire...my guess is not well.BlackFalkin wrote:Why not try to catch someone falling down from the fbs level? thats VERY true, seen it first hand. 90k is a great transition for an AC that was previously making 35k, but is it perfect for the school? My answer is NO. I say no bc you have got to get the best for your money... in a recession, a 90k job is like a 150k job some guys... What FBS assistant wont come down to be a HC?

They were at the mercy of who applied for the job, and from going over the resumes, Stubbs was probably the closest match to what you're saying they needed...in all honesty, I thought the candidate pool was pretty solid, all things considered. Frank Monica or Tim Rebowe would have been the best options in my humble opinion...both are highly respected in south Louisiana and would have brought instant credibility to the program. Stubbs brings a good resume and penchant for producing high octane offense, but is in his mid 50's, has moved all over the place, and has no immediate ties to the area. I can see why so many of their supporters are upset.BlackFalkin wrote:slulionsfan wrote:
