Texas State season in review

Post by slycat »

Fantastic article from the San Marcos Record

http://www.sanmarcosrecord.com/sports/l ... 05326.html
San Marcos — Texas State thought it was on the express lane to repeat as Southland Conference champions in 2009.

The Bobcats returned the core of their squad and only graduated a handful of players in the offseason. Granted, one of those departing seniors was All-American wide receiver Cameron Luke, but they felt those returning receivers were talented enough to step up in his absence.

If Texas State’s defense played marginally better than it did in 2008, the Bobcats would be in great shape.

Well, the Bobcats soon found the road to a repeat to be filled with axle-breaking potholes.

Texas State was ravaged by injuries and lost two standout players before or during the season (defensive back Drenard Williams and running back Karrington Bush). The loss of Bush proved to be the toughest, as the Bobcats couldn’t establish a running game after he went down for the season against Nicholls State.

Did all those debilitating Texas State injuries happen before, during, or after getting pasted by Southern Utah on the 3rd of October?

Before. Well Bush played in the game but was limited. It was his first game back after the first injury. He was still the top rusher for the team even though he only ran 9 times. The offense lost much of their power without him. He rushed for 1000+ yards the previous two seasons.

Tough break. Injuries make a huge difference for any team.

His injury pretty much put an end to our running game - as anticipated before the season started - and took away our offensive balance. We had to take a redshirt off a frehman and use our Sr RB, who was great in HS but used mainly as a blocking and receiving back the other 3 years he played.

Bush was a preseason All American and we don't know if he was able to get a medical redshirt or not.

Also have several injuries to other key O players here and there that didn't help but Bush was the big one. He may be able to come back next season but he had injury to all 3 ligaments and even if he does he may not be the same runner he was before.
