Very poignant comment in my mind:

"We got to find a way to gather up all FCS football to do the best we can and put values on people's commitments that are maybe different, but equally shared," Scarano said. "If the FCS goes the way of the BCS, and you slice off the top 20 percent of FCS, it'll be the demise of it. They'll just cut off their nose to spite their face, I think. If the Delawares, and the Montanas, and the JMUs, the [Appalachian] States -- and you can name maybe seven, eight schools -- if they decide their brand of football is completely different than the UNHs, well, who are they going to play with in the future, then?"

Also, first time I've heard CAA officials discussing Charlotte and George Mason playing football in the CAA (even if it is just a mention).

There is another concern for Scarano about the evolving CAA. With Hofstra and Northeastern gone, a conference that had a symmetric geographical divide between North and South has now shifted.

Old Dominion football will join the CAA in 2011 and Georgia State arrives in 2012, additions that will continue to draw the conference toward the south. This affects the cost of travel -- gone are some easy bus trips, in their place are more flights -- and the geographical footprint of the conference.

"That's my biggest concern," Scarano said, who said it's not just Old Dominion and Georgia State, but the potential that exists with schools such as George Mason or Charlotte, neither of which currently play football. "It's more of a demographic and types of schools as it is location. Those schools are all 25,000 enrollments and higher. And they have all that power that comes to bear with student fees."




Sounds like UNH would be open to a northern conference...

Exactly. I've been trying to say this for years (as have others).....AD's care about competition for sure, but the #1 concern for an FCS AD is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I had this discussion with ASUG8 the other night. Of course I have no reason to believe it but my own opinion. Division 1 football will re-organize again. It has to. One possibility will be the division of the FBS schools. It has already occurred to some extent between the BCS and the rest. It is just not a part of the NCAA yet. So you create a different subdivison for the FBS schools below the BCS level. Maybe some of the current conferences join the BCS. But the lower division will be the MAC's and USA's. They will have their own bowl system or playoffs. Many of the FCS schools willing to spend the bucks will move to that division. ASU, UM, UD, you can name the possibilities.

I don't think it is the demise of FCS football but more likely re-establishing the cost containment definition of FCS which was the original purpose..

It will depend on how tied to the overall Bowl System the big guys are. Right now, there are 34 bowls, needing 68 teams - next year, 70 teams. Only 120 FBS teams. They NEED games against the FCS counters to get enough teams with at least 6-6 records. And the big guys NEED conferences like the Sunbelt, MAC to schedule home games against, since their financial model dictates 7-8 home games a year. (just like Montana, Delaware, etc).

I don't think there will be a big shakeup - I think they will "allow" another dozen or so teams to go to FBS over the next decade, and encourage the FCS to stay at 63 or so schollies.

It will depend on how tied to the overall Bowl System the big guys are. Right now, there are 34 bowls, needing 68 teams - next year, 70 teams. Only 120 FBS teams. i agree. But it'll be driven by whether or not the "non" BCS conferences continue to be happy with the scraps and crumbs of the bowl system, or whether they clamor in unison for something better. I can definitely see a three tiered system of Division I football in the next 10 years.

Yep, which is why if there ever is an FBS playoff it will be for the lower tier schools not the BCS.
