Montana Travel Costs

Post by grizband »

During a radio show tonight, I heard Jim O'Day (Montana AD) explain travel costs for the Griz, and how this hinders series with most east coast teams. Basically, it costs the Griz between $100,000-$125,000 to travel to games back east, which must be funded some how. I guess O'Day and the App State. AD agreed the away team would be paid $100,000 for each game, to offset the travel costs, but most FCS teams cannot afford this amount of money.

My uncle tried telling me this weekend that conference games travel expenses are reimbursed. I didn't think that was the case. Anybody know the answer?

I cannot imagine that is true unless there is some sort of conference profit sharing, which I don't think happens at this level.

100,000 sounds about right. That's what Montana paid Albany to come out. And that's what it cost Albany to travel.

You just have to know when to roll the dice on that one. For instance if we lose one of the next two games it might be a good time to take a nap.

Old Dominion is paying Cal Poly $53k to come out next season. My guess is that amount is the difference of what their cost would be to travel to another left coast school instead. But that is just a guess because it will certainly cost more than $53k to travel out here. We spent $72k to go to Jacksonville.

I think they get paid, by playing the Griz. Some schools like PSU jack up the ticket prices and make their money in the huge increase in attendance having the Griz play them at their house.

I was sharing some cost data. Although, I too believe that sounds odd, especially in a conference where you play everyone else each season. The travel costs are just flipped the next year so there is a balance.

That was the point I tried to make to him, but 68-year olds rarely listen to logic.

I won't say I don't believe the travel cost stated but isn't that really high? I mean, we housed our entire team and staff in a hotel for all our home games this season and it came to $25,000. That's for 6 stays. Where are your guys staying, The Hilton Penthouses? And are they flying first class? Private Jets?

Seriously...Flying somewhere, roundtrip @ $500 x 100 people is $ 50,000 and that's over-estimating because I just picked a figure. The further out you plan these trips, the less expensive.

(Travelocity - 4 months out - Missoula to NYC is 456 per)

just wonderin'

Catmom they are chartered jets and there is a big difference there. You ain't gonna have these guys catching connecting flights and so forth in SLCity.

Do we send all the equipment via truck, or does it go on the flight?

I ask, because I swear I saw a huge USC moving truck right before they played U of W. Had to have been the majority of the equipment.

Generally, the equipment travels by truck while leaving in advance of the team. Other costs include food and buses. Once the team lands they need buses to take them to the hotel, stadium/field walkthrough, game, dining locations, and eventually back to the airport. Also, you need to have meeting rooms, A/V equipment setup, etc. Add that to the chartered plane and hotel (which can be two nights if it is a night game), and the price gets pretty high.

Good points...

This is where those costs add up...
