Portland State coaching search-Part II

Maybe it was a slow news day, but columnist John Canzano broke down the five rumored finalists for the Portland State job (maybe he really cares about it, but I'm inclined to believe the slow news day). Actually did a pretty good job discussing the final five. Here's the link...

My ranking of the final five...

1. Greg Lupfor---Should have had the job after Walsh. The players love him, the boosters love him, he would have made a good continuation move after Walsh. This would be a good time to make up, realize the Glanvile/Davis era was a mistake, and return to something that works.

2. Nigel Burton---Defensive minded coach would be a good fit for a team that struggled on defense the last three years. PSU valued their defense during the Walsh years and we should get back to the "Defense First" mentality.

3. Marshall Speckman---The Willamette coach would be a good fit. He knows how to win at the DIII level and knows how to recruit the Willamette Valley. But it is a big jump from DIII to FCS so a question on how long it would take to win at this level. Also, he comes with a gimmick (he has no hands), and PSU took a chance on a gimmick when it hired Glanville. Do we want another one?

4. Al Borges---Really, Borges is a lot like Glanville (my opinion). Laid back, no emotion, leaves it up to the kids on the field to dictate his coaching philosophy. To hire Borges would be similar to Glanville so my question would be why did we get rid of Glanville.

5. Stan Brock---Well known around Portland, but has never been a good college coach. This would be a good hire only if the hiring committee is trying to run the football program down to the ground.

Just because the coach has no hands doesnt mean he isnt good, he has done really well with being the Bearcats coach these past years.

Seems a little odd that a Big Sky school would hire the DC from Nevada, a team that has one of the worst pass defenses in FBS.

SacBuzz is reporting this as well, Venus. It excites me that ANOTHER member of the UOP Football family will be a D-I head coach. (To the best of my knowledge, that makes this exclusive club of TWO.) Burton will also be the second member of the '95 Tiger Football team to be a college head coach.

Man, it's good to see a teammate do well, especially on the heels of Tiger OL Bryan Chiu winning the Grey Cup last week!

Pending a final interview with the PSU president, scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Contrary to popular opinion, if this is who we get (I don't know exactly how much veto power the president will have tomorrow morning), I like it. If you're concerned that he will leave as soon as something better opens up, well he probably will need to show some success at PSU before then. The administration gave a former NFL coach only three years, let's see where we are after three years with this coach. I have to chuckle at the Duck and Beaver fans who feel like their opinion matters on this. Its not like they've ever really made an effort to attend PSU games in the last two years anyway. He coached at Oregon State, he played at Washington so he knows the recruiting area. He orchestrated the third best defense in the WAC (we ended the year seventh in the Big Sky) and had the best rushing defense (next year, both Montana and Eastern Washington will have strong running games). I'd like to see how we do with this coach.

Right now, Portland State needs success on the football field and Burton will need success if he wants to move on. PSU detractors thought Glanville would move on and he never did. Then again Glanville never had the success to move on.

I wouldn't worry too much about him "moving on"
After Glanville tanked the program - I might be more concerned about winning a few games first
I do agree: He'll draft well... that's a good place to start
