Appalachian State's multi-talented quarterback has set records that might never be broken

BOONE -- A vendor peddling game programs as fans filed into Kidd Brewer Stadium before an Appalachian State football game a few weeks ago discovered a sure way to move inventory.

The sales pitch wasn't a simple "Get your game program."

It was "Get your game program with Armanti Edwards on the cover."

Edwards has become an icon for ASU football. He beats Michigan. He wins national championships. His game jersey nets $1,200 in an auction. He sets records. He makes ESPN highlights. He helps draw crowds in excess of 30,000. He draws chatter from fixated fans for everything from lawn-mowing accidents to Heisman dreams to NFL potential. He sells game programs.

They're going to miss him at App State.

AE will most definitely be missed. IMO a majority of his records will stand for a long time. I hate to say that they will never be broken because who knows what the future holds but it will take a very special player and a unique situation for that to happen. He's been the face of one of the most dominant FCS programs in the country. The name Armanti Edwards strikes fear in the minds and game plans of every coach that has had to try and contain him. What makes him really great is his ability to remain grounded throughout his career. Even after the three NC, breaking records, beating Michigan, being thrust onto the national scene, and winning the Payton Award, he's still the same person. Always respectful and gracious to the fans and student body, it's been a hell of a ride for everyone involved with Appalachian Football but all great things come to an end (hopefully in Chattanooga with another NC). I just hope nobody ever wears #14 again for us.

I SINCERELY hope I'm afforded the opportunity to see AE play in Washington/Grizzly in two weeks...just so I can say "I saw him play in person"!

No one "in the know" (I'm assuming you think you are "in the know") gave ASU a second thought when we won the National Championship in 2005--Armanti's senior season in high school? I understand you're a homer, and that's cool, but as Mike Gundy says "get your facts straight." Richie Williams was our all-world QB in 2005.

To answer your question, maybe win three National Championships in a row (or within the decade), but I'm just guessing.

Nobody said Appalachian was the most dominant FCS program, I said ASU is ONE of the most dominant programs. You obviously don't know ANYTHING about the history and tradition at Appalachian State that goes WELL BEYOND what the program has accomplished since AE arrived in 2006. Three in a row is pretty dominant, and make it difficult to argue against App State as the team of the decade. If Montana does win the title this year, thought, they have a strong case for a 1a and 1b comparison.

A title this year would give Montana two in the decade, along with five appearances in the championship. Add to that another appearance in the semi-finals, and their total wins, and Montana it definitely among the dominant programs. I guess it depends on which you prefer, three straight titles, or five appearances, with two titles. Now if Montana doesn't win the chipper this year, App State hands down!

I agree with you. As an ASU Alum and having been a season a ticket holder for many years, it's the fans and core supporters that has been the backbone of Appalachian's success for not only these past few banner years, but over the past decades. The coaches and players will be the first to tell you that. Just about 24 hours to go...

So, were you in the know when we took Montana to OT in the snow? Agree....no one could have predicted the success as AppSt was not a regular contender year-in, year-out &, unlike Montana, there is not a state of Applachian & we aren't the only school in our state.....let's be honest, we weren't well known even after b2b titles outside of FCS notoriety & we were more famous as a punchline in The Longest Yard...thank god for Michigan...

Congrats on playing. So, you're saying ASU was not a "contender" after winning the first of three national championships in a row? It sounds like you didn't know much about the division in which you PLAYED.

I'm still not sure what your deal is. So, I'm guessing you didn't know Georgia Southern or Montana either based on them not beating a ranked I-A team? I get that you respect what ASU has accomplished, but what I don't get is your saying ASU was not known in I-AA circles after winning the national championship in 2005.

Pretty sure Appalachian was preseason number one in 2006... when Trey Elder was supposed to be our starter and almost noone had heard of Armanti Edwards. But, yeah, you're right... they were overrated and noone considered them a contender. It's not like anyone could replace Richie Williams or anthing.
