Is ASU's Dominance At An End?

The Appalachian State football dynasty has been built on several factors, including the decision of coach Jerry Moore and his staff several years ago to commit to the spread offense, the successful recruiting of athletes who can play that style, a loyal, talented coaching staff that provides continuity and the full backing of an administration that has figured out how vital a successful football program can be for the entire university.

Since 2006 the Mountaineers are 62-11, won three consecutive national championships (2006-08), four Southern Conference titles (stretching that domination to five straight league crowns) and have posted a 14-1 record in the playoffs.

That remarkable run of postseason success was derailed last season when Richmond came to Boone and soundly beat the Mountaineers 33-13, a self-inflicted defeat due mainly to seven turnovers.

After struggling through a 20-13 win over S.C. State in Boone Saturday in the first round of the FCS playoffs, ASU now gets a rematch with Richmond, the defending national champion, which slipped past Elon 16-13 in the first round.

The big difference this season? ASU has to play on the road, a fate it has been able to avoid before the championship round for each of the previous four seasons.

Anything is possible with AE. I would be more worried about next year (after he's gone) than this year. ASU is more than capable of beating Richmond on Saturday. They are the third best CAA team, IMHO, and even on the road, App should be able to win. I'm not predicting it, but there's no reason they can't win and it should come as a surprise to no one if they do win.

I've been underimpressed with Cadet so far in the limited amount of time I've seen him. Our team is built around Armanti, and you just don't get a player like that very often. I think 2010 will be a rebuilding year, hopefully getting Cadet more acclimated to the system - we're going to win a lot of games with him, but I think our recent successes will be on a hiatus for some period of time. I just hope the bandwagon isn't as large as I think it may be......

Richmond's defense is sound, but their offensive play has been inconsistant. Fortunate wins over Delaware and JMU, and trailed Towson at the half. Keep away from turnovers, and you've got a serious chance--I particularly recommend staying away from interceptions with less than a minute to play. Oh, the pain is coming back. Anyway, sorry to root against you, but we want another shot.

I agree. I like ASU to win this game. I don't know what ASU has in store for next year, but they are a real contender this year.

I thought Cadet might really be a great weapon for App heading into the season and I thought he played pretty well at ECU. Once he becomes the guy during the Spring and heading into Fall camp I think the offense will be fine. Armanti is a once in a lifetime player and App won't be the same without him but I like our chances to continue what's been built. We've got a great group that will be be back. App should continue to be the team to beat in the SoCon and a player on the national scene. Anything can happen in the playoffs but App has the talent and coaching to compete for a NC after AE.

I agree. I like ASU to win this game. I don't know what ASU has in store for next year, but they are a real contender this year.

Speaking of next year--Richmond is starting a ton of redshirt seniors on both sides of the ball this year. Could be now or never for them.

I know that ASU fans are hoping Cadet is the man, but don't discount Jamal Jackson. He's a virtual clone of Richie Williams in terms of size and ability (physical). If he's able to put the mental part together, he'll be the starter next season. It also wouldn't surprise me one bit to see App sign a QB this year, to push both of them in fall camp (or push one of them out of the backup roll).
