Pass Interferance

Post by clenz »

This is a rule I think needs to be looked at. I'm not talking what is/isn't PI, but the yardage on it.

I was watching the ND/Stanford game last night, and ND was killing Standord on the deep ball for big yards. Finally twice, in the same series, the Standford DB's wised up and just took the 15 yard PI rather than the 30 or 40 yard gain. I'm shocked it took that long for them to start doing it. I know when I was at Wartburg the defensive coaches said to the DB's "If you're beat and you know they will catch it for a big gain don't let them catch it anyway you can." Hell, if I was a high school or college coach I would tell them the same thing. Getting beat deep over and over? Give up the 15 rather than the 30.

I think college needs to go to the spot of the foul all the time, rather than just inside the 15 yards. I also don't get why it is a spot foul if it is withing the 15 yards. Are there any other penalties that have their yardage determine by where it happens? If a holding happens 7 yard in the back field is it then only a three yard penalty? No.

This is just something that bugs me about the college game.

On the flip side, I think the pros should go with one foot inbounds for a catch. :coffee:

I'm not sure where I stand on that issue yet. I just think that the PI needs to go to the pro route.

I'm not sure if Mr. Coffee indicates sarcasm or not...so I'll let that slide for now.

They should also use the college overtime system. Much more exciting.

I also love the college overtime, but the 25 yard line? Shit, make it a challenge. Teams are already starting in FG range. Move it to the 40 and make it a challenge. Or take the kickers out of it. (Yes, fuck you kickers, it is horse shit that people beat the shit out of each other for 60 minutes, then you waltz in and kick the ball for the win) Come overtime teams must go for two and can not kick a FG.

All college rules should be adopted in the NFL. Each week I wake up on Sunday excited to watch some football but after 5 minutes I am reminded of how boring the NFL is, too many commercials, predictable offenses, horrible teams.

Agree with the commercials and bland offense. TV stations are so worried about speeding the game up because they take too long, but I'm willing to bet out of the 3 hours-ish of the game close 3/4 of the broadcast is commercials.

I don't like the pro PI rule, because by giving them the ball at the spot of the foul, they are assuming that the reciever would have made the catch.

I don't like giving an offense 50 yards on a PI call, when if not interfered with, it would be a difficult catch anyway.

I completely agree
If u cant score a touchdown from the 25 yard-line you dont deserve to win the game

I could agree with changing the PI penalty on one condition--if the refs wouldn't turn such a blind eye to offensive PI, see it all the time. Also--- griz37 right about the pros.

How do you know the catch wouldn't be made? There are simple throws every week that go uncaught for various reasons. If that is the case, why call a PI on anything unless it will clearly hit the person in the hands? Pass interference is to keep someone fron interfering with the chance to make a play on the ball. There are exceptions to the PI rule, like the uncatchable ball which is clearly not going to be caught. Remember though, these guys are some of the best athletes with the best hand eye coordination in the world. To think that because a catch would be difficult, thus the PI shouldn't be called is asinine.

We need replay in FCS... I'm sick of seeing horrible calls go unchallenged.

This also. I don't know of many places (granted I haven't been to a lot of places) that don't have at least 2 or 3 cameras that could be fed to a booth to be used for replay

No, I didn't say it shouldn't be called. I do think it should be called. But I think that 15 yards is enough of a reward.

Why? Why should the defense be rewarded with 10+ yards netted for them because the DB blew a coverage and decided to take the WR out so he coudln't get a huge play?

Because like I said, I don't think you should reward the offense that much without them having to make the catch. Its difficult enough to make a long catch, I don't think we should assume that they would catch it.

15 yards and automatic first down is a pretty big penalty.

except that the camerawork (if it even exists) is often worse than the officiating.
