Dwight Jaynes has done it again!

Post by JALMOND »

For those of you who are not familiar with the Portland media, Dwight Jaynes likes to think that he is a helluva sportswriter, yet he has been run out of the Oregonian and also the Portland Tribune for not accurately checking his facts. Now he has done it again! Tonight, after the Blazer game, he was debating whether Glanville should stay or go. To "illustrate" how far the Viking program has fallen, he brought up these "facts" (now this is from a "respected" Portland sportswriter)

As per Dwight Jaynes:

2005 Portland State's record 10-1
2006 Portland State's record 6-5

The record during Glanville's years were accurate, but 10-1 would have placed us in the playoffs in 2005 no question, and our record in 2006 was 7-4. I can't remember the last time we were 10-1 but I know it was not 2005.

Sadly, this is the intellect of most sportswriters around here. Anything outside the Duck realm is totally foreign, yet they think they know everything.

I got a big kick out of 10-1, too. I thought I missed something.

We were far from 10-1 in 2005. I know that we did lose at Boise that year, after leading through most of the game until halfway through the 4th quarter. I believe we ended the year 6-5 that year.

I decided to check for myself. Herein lies the problem....apparently this guy got his "facts" from the PSU webpage. The 2005 schedule shown here http://www.goviks.com/SportSelect.dbml? ... EASON=2005 does indeed show the Viks going 10-1. Only problem is that they didn't. That 37-16 "win" this page shows against Montana was actually a loss. Likewise, the Viks did not beat Oregon St. 41-14, as this page indicates. Those are just two examples, I didn't check every game. Obviously, somebody effed up. Of course, any sports reporter worth a damn would have seen this and wondered why no one remembers this PSU juggernaut that went 10-1 and somehow got snubbed for the playoffs.

Not only those errors but look at the opponent column.

Portland State played Portland St. several times that year. Luckily they didn't play all of those games at home. They were on the road to Boise & Missoula for a couple of them.

Jeez, he could have at least checked with me. :D

Jaynes has never thoroughly checked his facts. Just kind of ran with what sounded good at the time.

Portland State's record...

2006 7-4
2005 6-5
2004 7-4
2003 8-3
2002 7-4

So I fired a response to Mr. Jaynes on his website. It is currently "being reviewed" under his topic of "Jerry Glanville is on the Hot Seat".

First I brought up the records under Walsh. Not as bad as one might think between the two regimes.

Second, I addressed the topic of PSU going to the WAC, something that has been a topic all day today. Basically what I said was that, if Boise State was to go undefeated and not play for a national championship, then what would happen if Portland State went undefeated in the WAC? The idea of if playing Hawaii does not help Boise with their national championship hopes, how would playing Hawaii benefit Portland State? And finally, if beating Oregon does not benefit Boise State after Oregon beat USC, how would Portland State benefit from playing Oregon?

Third, I outlined a plan for Glanville to agree to this year (yes I said Glanville should return for one more year). For what we have coming back, I said 6-5 is certainly doable. I also threw in that we should beat Montana ( :D ). I said if these things are not met by the end of next year, Glanville is out, and PSU has honored their end of the bargain. I also threw in the fact that McBride at Weber had four years to turn that program around and the Wildcats won the Big Sky title last year. I think that is fair.

Don't feel bad Jalmond.

I was listening to a local sports radio broadcast today that intervied EWU coach Beau Baldwin and then wondered afterward if EWU might be paired against Northern Illinois again in the first round.

I next read another biased article from a national "FCS reporting media outlet" about the playoffs and literally thought to myself 'Jalmond does a better job'. Hell I, with my edub degree in basket-weaving and obvious BSC bias could write a more informative and objective article.
