And there's your answer. MSU got in because of the head to head, IN ADDITION to beating an FBS. MSU and PSU were likely fighting for the last spot. This year, if both WSU and EWU win out, an 8-3 (7-3) will be up against a 7-4 for that last spot. That extra loss will hurt WSU since they do not have an FBS win.JALMOND wrote:2006...Portland State, had not lost since a loss at Montana State the second week in October, finished the year 9th in the GPI, had a win over FBS New Mexico (who not only was bowl eligible that year, but won their bowl game), had the 7 DI wins (7-4 overall, 6-2 vs FCS), and had turkey at my house that year. That year the Big Sky had the same number of representatives in the playoffs as the Ohio Valley did (2). The committee favored the second place OVC team as well as Coastal Carolina over PSU.kalm wrote:Three other albeit more subjective factors in EWU's favor would be 1) going out on a 4 game winning streak where they are currently winning by an average of over 20 pts/game 2) looking at the CS weekly poll thread, we're going to be in most people's top 15 and if we beat NAU should finish the season somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 in most polls, and 3) our current GPI is 13 versus Weber State at 16 and MSU at 23.
How often has the #12ish ranked team in the nation that is eligible for the post season not received an at-large? Would Weber's win against Poly and MSU's win against Montana be enough to lift them past EWU's GPI after a win against NAU? For that matter how many times has a conference with 3 teams the top 15 GPI not got all three in?
You see, I know a thing or two about that damn committee process.

Note that the won't come out and say the EWU will be home because they started the year with the ban. The NCAA will construct some bull manure story about no good wins, loss to Weber, blah blah blah, but not once mention the ban. They will leave that to us to debate. After all, they are the good guys. They rescinded the ban and gave the Eagles a chance. It's not their fault EWU is not going on. (yeah, right).
IF UM, EWU AND WSU ALL WIN: UM, EWU and WSU should go. Reality; UM and WSU will go.
IF MSU, EWU AND WSU ALL WIN: UM, EWU and MSU should go. Reality; UM and MSU will go.
EWU gets woofed in both scenarios.

I didn't even mention MSU. After they blew out Furman in the first round that year, they showed that they belonged. After the OVC's and Coastal bowed out...well, let me just say the Big Sky deserved three teams that year. Let me add that a win over a bowl eligible FBS team should have looked more impressive than a win over a non-bowl eligible team, but that is just speculation on my part. The committee and I never see eye to eye (or at least not often).Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:And there's your answer. MSU got in because of the head to head, IN ADDITION to beating an FBS. I was answering the question of a 12th ranked or better GPI team not make the playoffs that was otherwise eligible. Portland State was the team in 2006, Portland State stayed home. My point, this has happened before, in the Big Sky no less.

Just trying to figure out what I would do with an EWU shirt (red does not really go with anything). Actually, I think you would have quite the argument for inclusion if MSU beat UM as you beat MSU head to head.Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:So Jalmond, care to take my bet?Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:

They have gray with black lettering if you prefer. Not to mention if MSU wins the bet is moot (as I don't think EWU will get in if MSU wins. It's possible, but not likely.

Yes you can, and it's acknowledged. But in my opinion (and I think the eyes of the committee), that WSU's extra FBS game and therefore extra loss will keep them home over an EWU team with an equal FCS record, and 4-game winning streak.JALMOND wrote:Can I point out the fact that both EWU and WSU would be 7-2 against the FCS if both win out?Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:

Re: Big Sky getting a 2nd team in?
Uhhhh, sorry, I've been dealing with a big headache all day (mainly due to figuring out how we lost to Idaho State). How do I win? If MSU wins, am I still in? If EWU wins, am I still in? If WSU wins, am I in? What about Sac State (sorry, didn't want them to think they are being neglected). If MSU, EWU wins, and WSU loses, I think EWU has a valid argument to get in over the Bobcats. Or are we just playing only if EWU and WSU win and MSU loses? Any other scenarios, we aren't betting?Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:So Jalmond, care to take my bet?Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:

Exactly. Nothing is at stake if either WSU or EWU loses, or if MSU wins. If MSU loses and both EWU and WSU win, you win a shirt if WSU gets the nod over EWU, and I win if EWU gets the nod over WSU. If neither team gets the nod, not only is the committee retarded, but no one wins or loses the bet.JALMOND wrote:Uhhhh, sorry, I've been dealing with a big headache all day (mainly due to figuring out how we lost to Idaho State). Oh, what the hell, although I think I'm going to get an ear full of cider, just because I have to rely on you to tell me if I won or not.
Let me just add that, if EWU wins, MSU wins and WSU loses, I think you're in. Both EWU and MSU would have a record of 7-3, both would be on 4 game winning streaks, yet EWU won the head to head. I can't see the Bobcats getting past that, even with a win against Montana (at home, mind you).

I'd hope EWU would get the nod over MSU in the event they both win, but I don't see it happening. Wins over UM and WSU are better than our win over the Cats since we lost to both UM and WSU.

Let me add something more from the Vikings' year in 2006 which may clear up why I think EWU would get in over MSU...Aside from our loss to Montana State, our only other loss in FCS was to Montana (our other two losses were to Pac-10 teams Cal and Oregon). MSU had a loss to DII Chadron State and also lost 45-0 at home to UC-Davis. Ironically, the DII loss did not hurt the Bobcats as the DII game did not count, win or lose. Also, the GPI had Portland State at #9 and Montana State at #14. No matter how much common opponents may look, the committee usually always sides with head to head, particularly with conference foes.Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:How are you relying on me to tell you? And yes, at the time, I felt that MSU stole our spot. After their performance in the first round of the playoffs when they routed Furman, I changed my tune to the fact that the Big Sky deserved three teams in that year. Which in theory is how we should be thinking THIS year as well. There are 3 legitimate cases for BSC teams (assuming it plays out as we suspect).JALMOND wrote:And yes, at the time, I felt that MSU stole our spot.
