MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week are RB Deji Karim of Southern Illinois, S Lance Caldwell of Southern Illinois, and PK Zach Kutch of Illinois State. Kutch set a league record with six field goals in ISU's 25-7 win against Western Illinois. SIU, meanwhile, became the first league team to ever win at South Dakota State, and with the win secured at least a share of the league title and an automatic berth into the FCS playoffs.
Offense
RB Deji Karim, Southern Illinois, Sr., 5-11, 200, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Karim became the first all season to rush for over 100 yards against South Dakota State, as he had 127 yards on 21 carries in SIU’s 34-15 victory. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry and had long runs of 27 and 41 yards. The Jackrabbits came into the game only allowing 89 rushing yards a game, but behind Karim the Salukis marched to the tune of 280 yards on the ground. He went over 1,500 career yards rushing in the game, as he became the 19th Saluki ever to do so.
Defense
S Lance Caldwell, Southern Illinois, Sr., 6-1, 215, Detroit (MI) Bishop Gallagher
Caldwell accounted for both of SIU’s interceptions in the 34-15 win at South Dakota State on Saturday. His first one came late in the second quarter and he was able to return it 75 yards for a TD. It was the fifth-longest interception return for a scored in Saluki history. Caldwell’s second interception came in the third quarter when SDSU had the ball in the red zone. On a fourth-and-five at the SIU nine, Caldwell picked off Thomas O’Brien in the end zone to keep the Jacks off the scoreboard. Caldwell’s interceptions extended SIU’s streak to 10-straight games with at least on pick.
Special Teams
PK Zach Kutch, Illinois State, 5-9, 175, Sr., Milton (Fla.) Auburn
Kutch set a school and conference record with six field goals made in Illinois State 25-7 win over Western Illinois. The Milton, Fla., broke the school record (4) and league record (5) with those six field goals, which included a career-long 48-yarder in the second quarter. Three of Kutch’s field goals were 40 yards or longer (48, 40, 45) and four out of the six were made in the third quarter. Kutch’s only blemish on the day was a 42-yarder that was blocked in the second quarter, as he finished 6-for-7 overall in the contest.

Young carried the ball 32 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns in UT Martin’s 28-7 road victory at Tennessee State. Young scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter to put the Skyhawks up 7-0 and added a 1-yard run with five minutes to play to put his squad up 21-0. The touchdowns were his sixth and seventh of the season; Young ranks second on the team in scoring (44 points). It was Young’s first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Young now has 1,510 rushing yards in his career and is just 101 yards away from becoming the 10th all-time leading rusher in Skyhawk history.

Henderson tied the OVC single-game high for 2009 with 17 tackles in Jacksonville State’s 24-3 road victory at Southeast Missouri. The season-high total for Henderson included 13 solo stops for the senior. Henderson also recovered a fumble on the JSU 17-yard line to stop a Redhawk drive. Henderson has had double-digit tackles in five straight games and now ranks first in the Conference and 27th nationally with 9.89 tackles/game. Henderson is just 23 tackles away from third place on the Gamecocks career Division I tackles list. Henderson and the Jax State defense have not allowed an offensive touchdown over the last nine quarters.
CO-DEFENSIVE
Austen Lane, DE • Sr., 6-7, 270 • Iola, Wis. • Murray State
The All-American and Buck Buchanan Award candidate Lane added a new twist to his stat sheet when he dropped back an intercepted a pass that he returned 21 yards for a touchdown in Murray State’s 27-17 victory over Austin Peay. It was his first career interception in 41 career games. The play came with just over three minutes left in the game and pushed the Racer advantage to 27-10. Lane also added four tackles, two sacks, a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry. Lane now has 11 sacks on the season and ranks first nationally (1.22/game) in that category. His 1.89 tackles-for-loss per game ranks second nationally and his 0.33 fumbles recovered/game is 11th. Lane now was 29 sacks in his collegiate career.

Holt recorded a school-record 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, which set the Austin Peay record for longest kickoff return in the Governors 27-17 loss at Murray State. It was Holt’s third kickoff return for a touchdown in his three year career. Holt, the nation’s leader in all-purpose yards (204.33/game), finished the game with 241 total yards, including 77 rushing, 26 receiving, 16 in punt returns and 120 in kickoff returns. Holt also scored on a 30-yard rush in the second quarter and ranks 23rd nationally in scoring (8.00 points/game).

NEWCOMER
Casey Brockman, QB • Fr., 6-2, 205 • Murray, Ky. • Murray State
The true freshman walk-on Brockman made his collegiate debut in front of his hometown crowd and led Murray State to a 27-17 victory over Austin Peay on Saturday. Brockman completed 18-of-33 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown in helping the Racers win in its final home game of the season. Brockman tossed his first collegiate touchdown, a 25-yard pass to Prince Nwagbara, with 22 seconds left in the first half, cutting the then deficit to 10-7. Brockman became the first true freshman to start under center for Murray State in over 25 years.

Sophomore, Quarterback, Bloomington, Ind.
Huck ran for three touchdowns and passed for another two as Butler remained unbeaten with a 31-28 PFL victory at Dayton, Saturday. He rallied the Bulldogs from a 7-0 first quarter deficit with a pair of second quarter touchdowns and they would not trail the game’s remainder. Huck completed 12-of-29 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns and car¬ried the ball 12 times for 54 yards and three touchdowns. He had two seven yard touchdown carries and a 36-yard TD sprint. His seven-yard scoring pass to Dan Bohrer gave the Bulldogs the lead for good and he later added a 16-yard touchdown pass to Carter Wiley.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Peter Kidwell, Davidson
Sophomore, Defensive Back, Marshall, Va.
Kidwell’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown got Davidson on the board first in a 34-27 PFL victory at San Diego, Saturday. He also had four tackles (two solo) in the contest. It was the first Davidson interception return for a touchdown since the 2007 campaign. Kidwell has three in¬terceptions this season with 105 return yards.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jason Myers, Marist
Freshman, Kicker, Chula Vista, Calif.
Myers career-long 37-yard field goal sailed through the up¬rights with one second remaining pushed Marist to a 23-21 non-conference win against Georgetown, Saturday. His field goal rectified his lone mistake of the day, a missed PAT on Marist’s last touchdown drive. He made 2-of-3 extra-point tries on the day. Myers also handled kickoff duties, averag¬ing 59.0 yards on five kickoffs, including a touchback.

FRISCO, Texas - Southeastern linebacker Mark Newbill and punter Beau Mothe were named the Southland Conference defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, after guiding the Lions to a 27-0 victory at Northwestern State, the league office announced Monday. Newbill shared the defensive honor with Nicholls defensive back Jordan Nevels. McNeese State tailback Toddrick Pendland was named the Southland's offensive player of the week.

McNeese State tailback Toddrick Pendland, who had missed all or parts of the three previous games, returned in a big way last Saturday against Sam Houston State and helped lead the Cowboys to a 63-42 victory. The senior from Newton, Texas (Newton), ran for a season-high 171 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries. He also caught one pass for 24 yards. He scored three of his touchdowns in the first half and averaged 8.6 yards per run. Pendland is the national scoring leader in the Football Championship Subdivision, averaging 11.75 points per game. This is the second player of the week award for Pendland this season.

Nevels forced a Lumberjack fumble at the Colonel 1-yard line, saving a score in the second half, and also intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter on the Colonel 5-yard line to prevent another. His final turnover, a forced fumble, took place on third-and-short with less than 90 seconds to play. His 12 tackles, two forced fumbles and interception were career highs for him. This is the first player of the week award for Nevels this season.

Leonard earns CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after turning in a record-breaking receiving effort in Rhode Island’s 55-42 shootout-loss at No. 8 New Hampshire Saturday. The senior wide receiver hauled in 10 catches for 275 yards and three touchdowns, all marking career high totals for the Stoughton, Mass., native. Leonard’s 275 receiving yards rank as the third-best single-game total in school history and are the fifth-highest receiving total in CAA Football history. Leonard has now garnered 411 receiving yards (19 catches) and five touchdowns in his last three games for the Rams.
Offensive Player of the Week - Chris Whitney, QB, Villanova
Whitney garners CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping No. 4 Villanova knock off top-ranked Richmond 21-20 on the road Saturday. The junior completed 21-of-34 passes for 277 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ come-from-behind win. The Warminster, Pa., native is now 19-5 as a starter for the Wildcats after completing a game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass to Brandyn Harvey with 59 seconds left in Saturday’s game. Whitney, now 2-1 against Richmond in his career, helped the Wildcats end Richmond’s FCS-best 17-game win streak.

Trantin, the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week, led No. 5 William and Mary to a 31-0 shutout win over Towson at home Saturday. The sophomore linebacker garnered a team-high eight tackles including five solo stops. The Severn, Md., native also had one stop behind the line of scrimmage and picked off a Towson pass in the second quarter. Trantin led a Tribe defense, now among the Top-3 nationally in both scoring and total defense, which limited Towson to just 201 yards of total offense and shutout an opponent for the first time since 2005.

The redshirt-freshman’s touchdown run of 42 yards in the second quarter marked his longest of the season. Thorpe is now JMU’s all-time freshman quarterback rushing leader with 533 yards in 2009.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Quarterback Rob Curley of Lafayette, cornerback Josh Norman of Coastal Carolina and kick returner Terrence Holt of Austin Peay have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Rob Curley, Lafayette, Senior, 6-1, 200, Quarterback, Cinnaminson, NJ.
Curley set a Lafayette record and tied a pair of Patriot League marks with seven touchdown passes to lead the Leopards to a crucial 56-49 PL victory over Colgate Saturday at home. Curley completed 18-of-31 passes for a career-high 373 yards as he accounted for seven of Lafayette's eight TDs. He tied the PL record of seven TD passes that was set by Jeff Wiley of Holy Cross in a 1987 game against Lehigh and matched a mark for touchdowns responsible for that was held by Wiley and Fordham's Kevin Eachin (2003 vs Rhode Island). Curley's new Lafayette TD passes mark broke the record of five held by Tom Kirkhhoff (1991 vs Buffalo), Frank Bauer (1987 vs Army) and Paul Stuncius (1986 vs Army). It was the third consecutive week that Curley had broken his personal, single- game passing mark. The performance also moved Curley to second nationally in passing efficiency, behind only Ryan Perrilloux of Jacksonville State.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Norman tied a Big South single-game record with three interceptions all in the second half as Coastal Carolina held off Gardner-Webb for a 26-21 victory Saturday at home. Trailing 14-10, Norman ended a Bulldog scoring threat and set up CCU's first touchdown drive in the second half with a third-quarter interception. He ended another GWU scoring threat with his second interception in the fourth period and his third interception sealed the win in the end zone with less than 30 seconds to play. Norman's performance also helped him establish a Big South record with seven interceptions this season.

Terrence Holt, Austin Peay, Junior, 5-7, 180, Kick Returner, Nashville, TN.
Holt recorded a school-record 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Austin Peay's 27-17 loss at Murray State. Holt, the nation's leader in all-purpose yardage with 204 yards per game, finished with 241 yards in this game, rushing 13 times for 77 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and catching two passes for 26 yards. He had two punt returns for 18 yards and three kick returns total for 120 yards. With two more touchdowns, Holt also ranks 23rd nationally in scoring, averaging eight points per game

Rob Curley, Lafayette, QB, 6-1, 200, Sr., Cinnaminson, NJ
Curley had a record-setting performance in leading Lafayette past Colgate, 56-49, in a key League contest on Saturday. Curley completed 18-of-31 passes for 373 yards and seven touchdowns, tying the mark for passing touchdowns in a game set by Holy Cross’ Jeff Wiley on Sept. 26, 1987 against Lehigh.He joined Wiley and Fordham’s Kevin Eakin (2003 vs. Rhode Island) as the only Patriot Leaguers with seven touchdowns responsible for in a game. The touchdowns went to five different players, including two in the fourth quarter to break a 42-42 tie. The 373 yards were a career high, the third straight week that Curley has set a personal best for passing yards. Curley has thrown for 2,432 yards with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions and is completing 68 percent of his passes this year, marks that place him second nationally in passing efficiency.
Andrew Huck, Butler, QB, 6-2, 190, So., Bloomington, IN
Huck ran for three touchdowns and passed for another two as Butler remained unbeaten with a 31-28 PFL victory at Dayton, Saturday. He rallied the Bulldogs from a 7-0 first quarter deficit with a pair of second quarter touchdowns and they would not trail the game’s remainder. Huck completed 12-of-29 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball 12 times for 54 yards and three touchdowns. He had two seven yard touchdown carries and a 36-yard TD sprint. His seven-yard scoring pass to Dan Bohrer gave the Bulldogs the lead for good and he later added a 16-yard touchdown pass to Carter Wiley.

Zach Kutch, Illinois State, PK, 5-9, 175, Sr., Milton, FL
Kutch set a school and conference record with six field goals made in Illinois State 25-7 win over Western Illinois. The Milton, Fla., broke the school record (4) and league record (5) with those six field goals, which included a career-long 48-yarder in the second quarter. Three of Kutch’s field goals were 40 yards or longer (48, 40, 45) and four out of the six were made in the third quarter. Kutch’s only blemish on the day was a 42-yarder that was blocked in the second quarter, as he finished 6-for-7 overall in the contest.

RICHMOND, Va. (November 9, 2009) -- CAA Football announced its Player of the Week honorees, Monday, Nov. 9. Five individuals earned honors after showcasing superb efforts in contests played in Week 10 of the 2009 season, including James Madison’s Justin Thorpe, New Hampshire’s Tom Manning, Rhode Island’s Shawn Leonard, Villanova’s Chris Whitney and William and Mary’s Jake Trantin.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Shawn Leonard, WR, Rhode Island
Leonard earns CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after turning in a record-breaking receiving effort in Rhode Island’s 55-42 shootout-loss at No. 8 New Hampshire Saturday. The senior wide receiver hauled in 10 catches for 275 yards and three touchdowns, all marking career high totals for the Stoughton, Mass., native. Leonard’s 275 receiving yards rank as the third-best single-game total in school history and are the fifth-highest receiving total in CAA Football history. Leonard has now garnered 411 receiving yards (19 catches) and five touchdowns in his last three games for the Rams.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Chris Whitney, QB, Villanova
Whitney garners CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping No. 4 Villanova knock off top-ranked Richmond 21-20 on the road Saturday. The junior completed 21-of-34 passes for 277 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ come-from-behind win. The Warminster, Pa., native is now 19-5 as a starter for the Wildcats after completing a game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass to Brandyn Harvey with 59 seconds left in Saturday’s game. Whitney, now 2-1 against Richmond in his career, helped the Wildcats end Richmond’s FCS-best 17-game win streak.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week - Jake Trantin, LB, William and Mary
Trantin, the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week, led No. 5 William and Mary to a 31-0 shutout win over Towson at home Saturday. The sophomore linebacker garnered a team-high eight tackles including five solo stops. The Severn, Md., native also had one stop behind the line of scrimmage and picked off a Towson pass in the second quarter. Trantin led a Tribe defense, now among the Top-3 nationally in both scoring and total defense, which limited Towson to just 201 yards of total offense and shutout an opponent for the first time since 2005.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week - Tom Manning, PK, New Hampshire
Manning, the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season, was true on a total of nine kicks in New Hampshire’s 55-42 shootout-win over Rhode Island Saturday. The Rome, N.Y., native hit two second-half field goals helping the Wildcats outpace the Rams. The first was a 42-yarder late in the third to push New Hampshire’s lead to eight, while his second was a 47-yard boot with 5:58 left to play. The senior was also true on seven PAT attempts in the game, giving him 13 points on the day.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week - Justin Thorpe, QB, James Madison
Thorpe earned Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season following his performance in James Madison’s 22-14 win over Maine Saturday. The Richmond, Va., native carried the ball 17 times for 83 yards and a score and also completed 9-of-13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. The redshirt-freshman’s touchdown run of 42 yards in the second quarter marked his longest of the season. Thorpe is now JMU’s all-time freshman quarterback rushing leader with 533 yards in 2009.
SoCon Announces Week Ten Football Players of the Week
Newsome, Smith, Johnson and Hawk Earn Weekly Honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, Nov. 7. Elon running back Brandon Newsome was named Offensive Player of the Week while Samford linebacker Bryce Smith was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Week. Western Carolina running back Michael Johnson was tabbed as the Freshman of the Week, and Furman’s Trent Hawk was honored as Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brandon Newsome, Elon, Jr., RB
Newsome rushed for a career-high four touchdowns to lead No. 6 Elon past Western Carolina, 42-17, on Saturday afternoon. The junior, who notched his fifth-career 100-yard game with 143 yards rushing on 16 carries, scored in each quarter as the Phoenix improved to 8-1 on the season. Newsome also caught a pass for 16 yards to total 159 yards of offense on the day.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bryce Smith, Samford, Jr., LB
Smith led the Samford defense in a dominating performance in the Bulldogs’ 31-10 win over Georgia Southern. Smith led all tacklers with 12, and he had two key interceptions. Smith’s first interception came at the end of the first quarter and set up Samford’s first touchdown of the day. His second interception ended a GSU drive in the fourth quarter to put the game away for the Bulldogs.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Michael Johnson, Western Carolina, Fr., RB
Johnson rushed for a career-high 116 yards against No. 6 Elon, becoming the first rusher to top the century mark this season against the nation’s fourth-toughest run defense. He added 31 yards on four receptions for the Catamounts. Johnson had 93 yards in the first half alone.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Trent Hawk, Furman, Sr., P
Hawk booted eight punts for a 48.1 yard average in Furman’s 63-31 loss at Auburn on Saturday. Four of the senior’s eight punts traveled further than 50 yards, including a season-long 60-yard boot. Three of Hawk’s kicks landed inside the 20 yard line while none traveled into the end zone for a touchback. His 49-yard effort in the third quarter was fumbled at the Auburn 6 and recovered by Furman, leading to Paladins' first touchdown of the game.

Big Sky honors Waggener, Schrader Storms, McKnight
OGDEN, UTAH (Nov. 9, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has selected its football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Nov. 7. Northern Colorado quarterback Bryan Waggener is the Offensive Player of the Week. Sacramento State defensive back Zach Schrader and Idaho State linebacker A.J. Storms are the Co-Defensive Players of the Week. Montana kicker Brody McKnight is the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Waggener, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior from Chino, Calif., completed 35-of-58 passes for a season-best 325 yards and rushed for 53 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 38-35 loss to Sacramento State. Waggener rallied the Bears’ from a 31-point halftime deficit as he engineered five second-half scoring drives that were all at least 73 yards and took less than three minutes. The 35 completions is a single-game school record. Waggener’s 378 total yards of offense tied for the eighth-most in school history.
Schrader, a 6-1, 195-pound junior from Issaquah, Wash., registered 14 tackles, intercepted a pass and forced a fumble in the Hornets’ 38-35 win over Northern Colorado. He tied his career high in tackles and set a career mark with seven solo stops. He returned his second-quarter interception 24 yards to set up Sacramento State’s final touchdown of the first half. Sacramento State shut out the Bears in the first half, running their string of scoreless quarters to four.
Storms, a 6-foot, 208-pound sophomore from Meridian, Idaho, tallied 11 tackles – one for loss – and forced a fumble in Idaho State’s near upset of second-ranked Montana. Storms had seven solo tackles. Near the end of the third quarter, Storms stopped UM’s Chase Reynolds in the backfield, forcing a fumble on a fourth-and-1 play from the Idaho State 4-yard line. Idaho State’s defense held Montana to just one touchdown and two field goals. The Grizzlies entered the game averaging 37.1 points per game overall and 41.4 points in conference games.
McKnight, a 6-foot, 194-pound sophomore from Vancouver, B.C., made the game-winning 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift second-ranked Montana to a 12-10 win over Idaho State. McKnight also made a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter to put the Grizzlies up 3-0. McKnight’s game-winning field-goal was the second of his career.

MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week are RB Deji Karim of Southern Illinois, S Lance Caldwell of Southern Illinois, and PK Zach Kutch of Illinois State. Kutch set a league record with six field goals in ISU's 25-7 win against Western Illinois. SIU, meanwhile, became the first league team to ever win at South Dakota State, and with the win secured at least a share of the league title and an automatic berth into the FCS playoffs.

Karim became the first all season to rush for over 100 yards against South Dakota State, as he had 127 yards on 21 carries in SIU’s 34-15 victory. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry and had long runs of 27 and 41 yards. The Jackrabbits came into the game only allowing 89 rushing yards a game, but behind Karim the Salukis marched to the tune of 280 yards on the ground. He went over 1,500 career yards rushing in the game, as he became the 19th Saluki ever to do so.

Caldwell accounted for both of SIU’s interceptions in the 34-15 win at South Dakota State on Saturday. His first one came late in the second quarter and he was able to return it 75 yards for a TD. It was the fifth-longest interception return for a scored in Saluki history. Caldwell’s second interception came in the third quarter when SDSU had the ball in the red zone. On a fourth-and-five at the SIU nine, Caldwell picked off Thomas O’Brien in the end zone to keep the Jacks off the scoreboard. Caldwell’s interceptions extended SIU’s streak to 10-straight games with at least on pick.

Young carried the ball 32 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns in UT Martin’s 28-7 road victory at Tennessee State. Young scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter to put the Skyhawks up 7-0 and added a 1-yard run with five minutes to play to put his squad up 21-0. The touchdowns were his sixth and seventh of the season; Young ranks second on the team in scoring (44 points). It was Young’s first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Young now has 1,510 rushing yards in his career and is just 101 yards away from becoming the 10th all-time leading rusher in Skyhawk history.

Henderson has had double-digit tackles in five straight games and now ranks first in the Conference and 27th nationally with 9.89 tackles/game. Henderson is just 23 tackles away from third place on the Gamecocks career Division I tackles list. Henderson and the Jax State defense have not allowed an offensive touchdown over the last nine quarters.

The All-American and Buck Buchanan Award candidate Lane added a new twist to his stat sheet when he dropped back an intercepted a pass that he returned 21 yards for a touchdown in Murray State’s 27-17 victory over Austin Peay. It was his first career interception in 41 career games. The play came with just over three minutes left in the game and pushed the Racer advantage to 27-10. Lane also added four tackles, two sacks, a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry. Lane now has 11 sacks on the season and ranks first nationally (1.22/game) in that category. His 1.89 tackles-for-loss per game ranks second nationally and his 0.33 fumbles recovered/game is 11th. Lane now was 29 sacks in his collegiate career.

Brockman completed 18-of-33 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown in helping the Racers win in its final home game of the season. Brockman tossed his first collegiate touchdown, a 25-yard pass to Prince Nwagbara, with 22 seconds left in the first half, cutting the then deficit to 10-7. Brockman became the first true freshman to start under center for Murray State in over 25 years.

Great West Players of the Week from Week No. 10
Saturday’s games had big implications on the Great West Conference race for the title. UC Davis’ 23-10 win over Cal Poly, coupled with Southern Utah’s 45-21 loss at South Dakota, set up a game for the championship this Saturday. UC Davis (2-1 in Great West play) will host North Dakota (2-1 GWC) for the title.
South Dakota running back Chris Ganious led a ground game that took the hope of a conference championship away from Southern Utah, while Mike Morales led a UC Davis defense and kicker Sean Kelley connected on three field goals that also ended the title hopes of Cal Poly.

Chris Ganious rushed for 193 yards in USD’s win over Southern Utah on Saturday. A workhorse from the start, the sopho¬more running back averaged 7.7 yards on 25 carries and posted a 45-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter. He also caught three passes for 41 yards.

The Mustangs did not score on the drive (missed field goal) and did not score the remainder of the game. It was Morales’ third double-digit tackles effort of the year and tied his season-high of 13 stops earned at Boise State. His 248 total tackles rank No. 4 all-time at UC Davis, and he is also tied for No. 2 in solo stops (131) and is No. 7 in assists (117) (records kept since 1987).

Kelley has 22 career field goals, tying him for No. 6 all-time at UC Davis while his 12 field goals this season are tied for fifth-most. His 52-yarder is tied for 8th-longest in the FCS this season.

Southland Conference Announces Football Players of the Week
Pair of Southeastern players honored alongside players from McNeese State and Nicholls
FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern linebacker Mark Newbill and punter Beau Mothe were named the Southland Conference defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, after guiding the Lions to a 27-0 victory at Northwestern State, the league office announced Monday. Newbill shared the defensive honor with Nicholls defensive back Jordan Nevels. McNeese State tailback Toddrick Pendland was named the Southland’s offensive player of the week.

McNeese State tailback Toddrick Pendland, who had missed all or parts of the three previous games, returned in a big way last Saturday against Sam Houston State and helped lead the Cowboys to a 63-42 victory. The senior from Newton, Texas (Newton), ran for a season-high 171 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries. He also caught one pass for 24 yards. He scored three of his touchdowns in the first half and averaged 8.6 yards per run. Pendland is the national scoring leader in the Football Championship Subdivision, averaging 11.75 points per game. Nicholls defensive back Jordan Nevels led the Colonels to a near upset of Stephen F. Austin last Saturday. The senior from Fort Thomas, Ky. (Highlands), recorded 12 total tackles (6 solo) and forced three turnovers. Nevels forced a Lumberjack fumble at the Colonel 1-yard line, saving a score in the second half, and also intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter on the Colonel 5-yard line to prevent another. His final turnover, a forced fumble, took place on third-and-short with less than 90 seconds to play. His 12 tackles, two forced fumbles and interception were career highs for him. This is the first player of the week award for Nevels this season.
Defensive Co-Player of the Week: Mark Newbill, Southeastern Louisiana
Southeastern Louisiana linebacker Mark Newbill recorded 14 tackles, including seven solos, in Southeastern’s 27-0 victory at Northwestern State. It was the Lions’ first win in Natchitoches, La., since 1976 and their first shutout since a 28-0 win over Western Kentucky in 1984. The junior from Monore, La. (Neville), had one tackle for loss and led a defense that allowed 261 yards total offense and forced two turnovers. This is Newbill’s second player of the week award this season.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Beau Mothe, Southeastern Louisiana
Southeastern Louisiana punter Beau Mothe punted a season-high nine times, averaging 42.2 yards per attempt, in the Lions’ 27-0 victory at Northwestern State. The freshman from New Orleans, La. (Jesuit), placed five punts inside the Demons’ 20, including three inside the 10. He had two punts downed at the Northwestern State 1 and another at the Demons’ 5. Mothe had three punts of more than 50 yards, including a season-high 54-yard boot in the second quarter. This is the first player of the week award for Mothe this season.

MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY FOOTBALL HONORS
NSU’s Branche and DSU’s Strums Earn Top Weekly Honors
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., November 9, 2009 – Norfolk State’s DeAngleo Branche was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Jerome Strums of Delaware State was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Lewis Kindle of North Carolina A&T earned Rookie of the Week honors while Mike Maloney, also of Delaware State, earned Offensive Lineman of the Week accolades. LeRoy Vann of Florida A&M was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.
Branche (RB, 5-11, 200, r-Jr., Norfolk, Va.) rushed for a season-high 145 yards on 19 carries with a rushing touchdown as the Spartans defeated the Bears, 31-23. He also caught his first career TD pass on a 16-yard screen play in the third quarter.
Strums (DB, 6-0, 175, r-Sr., Windsor, Conn.) recorded two turnovers in the Hornets 24-21 win over Winston-Salem State. Strums scooped up a botched pitch and returned it 21 yards to the end zone to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead with just six minutes left in the first quarter. He also recorded an interception and a solo tackle as the Hornets went on to win their last road game of the season.
Kindle (QB, 6-2, 180, Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) completed 16-of-30 passes for 206 yards with two touchdowns in his first career start for the Aggies. He also carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards and a rushing touchdown as the Aggies loss to Florida A&M, 27-31.
Maloney (RT, 6-6, 290, Sr., Chicago, Ill.) received a grade of 98-percent for his efforts against Winston-Salem State. Maloney led the DSU offensive line that accounted for 255 yards of total offense including 153 yards on the ground. He also recorded 11 pancake blocks and committed no penalties in his 20th consecutive start.
Vann (DB, 5-9, 185, Sr., Tampa, Fla.) recorded four punt returns for 81 yards including a 51-yard return for a touchdown, his fifth of the season. He also recorded four kickoff returns for 51 yards. Vann’s touchdown breaks the institution’s single season record and ties an NCAA Division I FCS and MEAC single season high for returns with five (5), set by North Carolina A&T’s Curtis Deloach in 2001.

Willie Carter (HOW) caught five passes for 91 yards and one touchdown in the Bison’s disappointing loss to South Carolina State.
Blake Erickson (SCSU) converted 5-of-5 PAT and 2-of-3 field goals, including a career long 44 yarder in the Bulldogs 43-13 win over Howard.
Carlton Ford (NSU) recorded five pancake blocks and graded out at 86-percent of his assignments as led a dominate offensive effort against Morgan State with 379 total yards.
Ronell Ferguson (SCSU) posted four tackles, two solo, with two for a loss of four yards and helped spark a change that limited Howard to just 62 yards on the ground.
Corwin Hammond (NSU) registered a career-high 11 tackles, five solo, with two for a loss of 10 yards.
Arando Jamison (HOW) tallied 10 tackles, three solo, with one for a loss of one yard. He also recorded three deflected passes and forced a fumble in the loss to South Carolina State.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Charleston Southern quarterback A.J. Toscano (Pico River, Calif.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina defensive back Josh Norman (Greenwood, S.C.) has been selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for games played during Week 10 of the 2009 regular-season, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Liberty kicker Matt Bevins (Newport News, Va.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week, while Presbyterian College running back Lance Byrd (Jacksonville, Fla.) has been selected as The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Toscano amassed 351 yards of total offense and was responsible for five touchdowns in the Buccaneers’ win at Presbyterian College. He was 18-of-32 passing for 290 yards and four touchdowns, and was the team’s leading rusher with 61 yards and a score. Toscano threw a touchdown pass in each quarter and scored on an 11-yard run in the third stanza. He averaged 9.1 yards per pass attempt and did not throw an interception for the second-straight game.
Norman tied a Big South single-game record with three interceptions – all in the second half -- in Coastal Carolina’s home win over Gardner-Webb. His first interception ended a GWU scoring threat deep in Coastal territory, and set up the Chanticleers’ first touchdown of the second half. Norman’s second pick ended Gardner-Webb’s next-to-last scoring drive on its first play, and his final interception sealed Coastal’s victory as he picked off a pass in the end zone with less than 30 seconds to play. Norman now has a Big South single-season record seven interceptions on the year.
Bevins tied the Big South single-game record with four field goals against VMI Saturday, and finished with a career-best 16 points against the Keydets. Bevins averaged 40.8 yards on his four field goals, as he hit from 42, 38, 40 and 43 yards, and is now just the second player in Big South history to make four field goals in a game twice in a career. He also was perfect on 4-of-4 PAT attempts. Bevins now ranks second nationally in field goals per game (1.89) and ninth nationally in scoring (9.22 points per game).
In his first career start, Byrd rushed for a school-record 274 yards and two touchdowns against Charleston Southern, the second-highest single-game total in Big South history and the most in a Conference game. He established a PC Division I record with 159 rushing yards in the first half, and in the fourth quarter, he broke the 16-year school record of 254 rushing yards on a draw play. Byrd averaged 8.3 yards on his 33 carries, had 10 rushes of greater than 10 yards -- including four carries for more than 20 yards, and finished the day with 286 all-purpose yards.
Patriot League Announces Football Players of the Week
Lafayette and Holy Cross Each Have Two Winners
Center Valley, Pa. - Lafayette and Holy Cross have each won their first four Patriot League Football games, and the pair that will meet for the League title on Saturday were also even in the weekly honors category with two apiece on Monday.
Lafayette senior quarterback Rob Curley earns the League's Offensive Player of the Week award, while teammate Davis Rodriguez is named Special Teams Player of the Week for a record fifth time in his career. Holy Cross senior linebacker Andrew Cialino is the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman running back Eddie Houghton won his third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award this year.
Curley set a Lafayette record and tied a Patriot League mark with seven touchdown passes in the Leopards' 56-49 win over Colgate. He also threw for a career-high 373 yards in winning his second consecutive weekly honor. Cialino made a career-high 15 tackles, including 12 solo stops, to lift Holy Cross to a 24-20 win at Lehigh. Rodriguez made both of his field goal attempts and all six of his extra point tries in Lafayette's victory, while Houghton ran for 38 yards and a touchdown in the Crusaders' triumph.
Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week
Rob Curley, Lafayette Sr., QB, 6'1, 200, Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross Curley earns the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honor for the second straight time after a record-setting performance in leading No. 25/24 Lafayette past No. 18/20 Colgate, 56-49, in a key League contest on Saturday. Curley completed 18-of-31 passes for 373 yards and seven touchdowns, tying the mark for passing touchdowns in a game set by Holy Cross' Jeff Wiley on Sept. 26, 1987 against Lehigh. He joined Wiley and Fordham's Kevin Eakin (2003 vs. Rhode Island) as the only Patriot Leaguers with seven touchdowns responsible for in a game. The touchdowns went to five different players, including two in the fourth quarter to break a 42-42 tie. The 373 yards were a career high, the third straight week that Curley has set a personal best for passing yards. Curley has thrown for 2,432 yards with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions and is completing 68 percent of his passes this year, marks that place him second nationally in passing efficiency. Curley earns his third career Offensive weekly honor.
Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week
Andrew Cialino, Holy Cross Sr., LB, 6'1, 230, Medford, N.J./Shawnee Cialino tallied 15 tackles, including 12 solo stops, to lead a solid defensive effort at No. 13/14 Holy Cross remained undefeated in the Patriot League with a 24-20 win at Lehigh. The total and solo tackle marks were both career highs, and he now has 68 total tackles this year.

CRUZ (Lake Forest, Calif.) finished the game with a team-high nine tackles, including seven solo stops, a tackle for a loss of three yards and broke-up three passes, including another one in the end zone in the Bears’ 35-21 win over Yale. With Yale knocking down the door of the Brown end zone with 3:23 left in the game, the Bears needed a big play. A touchdown would draw the Elis to within a touchdown of the Bears. On first down and six at the Brown six-yard line, Cruz jumped high into the air and made a leaping one-hand interception to shut the door and help seal with road win for Brown.

Dartmouth sophomore placekicker FOLEY SCHMIDT (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) came through with two big three field goals, after going four straight games without a single field goal attempt, and two point-after-touchdowns to help Dartmouth capture a 20-17 double-overtime victory over Cornell. With 2:17 to play, he drilled a 26-yard field goal to tie the game at 10, which ended up forcing overtime. In the first extra period, he contributed the PAT to tie the game at 17 before launching a season-long 40-yard field goal that turned out to be the game-winner.

Doscher produced more than 300 yards of total offense for the third time in four weeks to power Wagner past Central Connecticut State. The freshman quarterback was responsible for all five of Wagner’s touchdowns in a 32-27 comeback victory that extended the Seahawks’ win streak to four and lifted them into a first-place tie in the NEC standings. After the Blue Devils scored twice to claim a 27-20 lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Doscher answered back by engineering a pair of touchdown drives within the final 10:15. First, he capped a six-play, 53-yard drive by rushing into the end zone from two yards out to cut the deficit to one. The rookie signal caller fumbled the snap on the ensuing extra point, but would do his best to make up for it. With 1:35 remaining on the clock and the ball at Wagner’s 37-yard line, Doscher rushed for 24 yards and passed for another 39 in guiding his Seahawks to the game-winning score. Doscher, who finished 11-of-16 passing for 174 yards and three TDs, completed the comeback with a 15-yard scoring strike to Lon Woods. He added another 130 yards and two scores on 15 rushes.

With the Great Danes threatening in the red zone on the opening drive of the second half, Navarro intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards to tilt the field position battle in RMU”s favor. Navarro ended another Albany drive by sacking the quarterback during a 3rd-and-9 situation on the final play of the third quarter.

Zambarano’s first start this season resulted in a strong defensive effort worthy of weekly honors. The sophomore linebacker accounted for a career-high 11 tackles (10 solo), three tackles for loss, and a pass break-up in Sacred Heart’s 24-14 NEC win over Bryant. Zambarano made two huge hits on back-to-back plays with SHU clinging to a 17-14 lead in the third quarter. Forcing Bryant to punt on its opening drive of the second half, Zambarano stuffed the Bulldogs’ ball carrier for no gain before sacking the quarterback for a 10-yard loss on the next play.
NEC Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Garrett Clawson, Robert Morris

Clawson claims NEC Special Teams honors for the second consecutive week after his 20-yard field goal dealt Albany a 13-10 loss as time expired. The junior placekicker has hit five field goal attempts during Robert Morris’ current three-game win streak. Clawson’s 39-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half extended the Colonials’ lead over the two-time defending NEC champion Great Danes to 10-3. The only miss in his past six attempts was a 46-yard try in the third quarter against Albany. It would have been the second-longest in the NEC this season.
NEC Football Rookie of the Week
Nick Doscher, Wagner

Doscher produced more than 300 yards of total offense for the third time in four weeks to power Wagner past Central Connecticut State. The freshman quarterback was responsible for all five of Wagner’s touchdowns in a 32-27 comeback victory that extended the Seahawks’ win streak to four and lifted them into a first-place tie in the NEC standings. After the Blue Devils scored twice to claim a 27-20 lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Doscher answered back by engineering a pair of touchdown drives within the final 10:15. First, he capped a six-play, 53-yard drive by rushing into the end zone from two yards out to cut the deficit to one. The rookie signal caller fumbled the snap on the ensuing extra point, but would do his best to make up for it. With 1:35 remaining on the clock and the ball at Wagner’s 37-yard line, Doscher rushed for 24 yards and passed for another 39 in guiding his Seahawks to the game-winning score. Doscher, who finished 11-of-16 passing for 174 yards and three TDs, completed the comeback with a 15-yard scoring strike to Lon Woods. He added another 130 yards and two scores on 15 rushes.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Curley set a Lafayette record and tied a pair of Patriot League marks with seven touchdown passes to lead the Leopards to a crucial 56-49 PL victory over Colgate Saturday at home. Curley completed 18-of-31 passes for a career-high 373 yards as he accounted for seven of Lafayette's eight TDs. He tied the PL record of seven TD passes that was set by Jeff Wiley of Holy Cross in a 1987 game against Lehigh and matched a mark for touchdowns responsible for that was held by Wiley and Fordham's Kevin Eachin (2003 vs Rhode Island). Curley's new Lafayette TD passes mark broke the record of five held by Tom Kirkhhoff (1991 vs Buffalo), Frank Bauer (1987 vs Army) and Paul Stuncius (1986 vs Army). It was the third consecutive week that Curley had broken his personal, single- game passing mark. The performance also moved Curley to second nationally in passing efficiency, behind only Ryan Perrilloux of Jacksonville State.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Norman tied a Big South single-game record with three interceptions all in the second half as Coastal Carolina held off Gardner-Webb for a 26-21 victory Saturday at home. Trailing 14-10, Norman ended a Bulldog scoring threat and set up CCU's first touchdown drive in the second half with a third-quarter interception. He ended another GWU scoring threat with his second interception in the fourth period and his third interception sealed the win in the end zone with less than 30 seconds to play. Norman's performance also helped him establish a Big South record with seven interceptions this season.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Terrence Holt, Austin Peay, Junior, 5-7, 180, Kick Returner, Nashville, TN.
Holt recorded a school-record 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Austin Peay's 27-17 loss at Murray State. Holt, the nation's leader in all-purpose yardage with 204 yards per game, finished with 241 yards in this game, rushing 13 times for 77 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and catching two passes for 26 yards. He had two punt returns for 18 yards and three kick returns total for 120 yards. With two more touchdowns, Holt also ranks 23rd nationally in scoring, averaging eight points per game

Rob Curley, Lafayette, QB, 6-1, 200, Sr., Cinnaminson, NJ
Curley had a record-setting performance in leading Lafayette past Colgate, 56-49, in a key League contest on Saturday. Curley completed 18-of-31 passes for 373 yards and seven touchdowns, tying the mark for passing touchdowns in a game set by Holy Cross’ Jeff Wiley on Sept. 26, 1987 against Lehigh.He joined Wiley and Fordham’s Kevin Eakin (2003 vs. Rhode Island) as the only Patriot Leaguers with seven touchdowns responsible for in a game. The touchdowns went to five different players, including two in the fourth quarter to break a 42-42 tie. The 373 yards were a career high, the third straight week that Curley has set a personal best for passing yards. Curley has thrown for 2,432 yards with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions and is completing 68 percent of his passes this year, marks that place him second nationally in passing efficiency.
Andrew Huck, Butler, QB, 6-2, 190, So., Bloomington, IN
Huck ran for three touchdowns and passed for another two as Butler remained unbeaten with a 31-28 PFL victory at Dayton, Saturday. He rallied the Bulldogs from a 7-0 first quarter deficit with a pair of second quarter touchdowns and they would not trail the game’s remainder. Huck completed 12-of-29 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball 12 times for 54 yards and three touchdowns. He had two seven yard touchdown carries and a 36-yard TD sprint. His seven-yard scoring pass to Dan Bohrer gave the Bulldogs the lead for good and he later added a 16-yard touchdown pass to Carter Wiley.
Josh Norman, Coastal Carolina, CB, 6-2, 190, So., Greenwood, SC
Norman tied a Big South single-game record with three interceptions – all in the second half – in Coastal Carolina’s home 26-21 win over Gardner-Webb. His first interception ended a GWU scoring threat deep in Coastal territory, and set up the Chanticleers’ first touchdown of the second half. Norman’s second pick ended Gardner-Webb’s next-to-last scoring drive on its first play, and his final interception sealed Coastal’s victory as he picked off a pass in the end zone with less than 30 seconds to play. Norman now has a Big South single-season record seven interceptions on the year.
Zach Kutch, Illinois State, PK, 5-9, 175, Sr., Milton, FL
Kutch set a school and conference record with six field goals made in Illinois State 25-7 win over Western Illinois. The Milton, Fla., broke the school record (4) and league record (5) with those six field goals, which included a career-long 48-yarder in the second quarter. Three of Kutch’s field goals were 40 yards or longer (48, 40, 45) and four out of the six were made in the third quarter. Kutch’s only blemish on the day was a 42-yarder that was blocked in the second quarter, as he finished 6-for-7 overall in the contest.

Five individuals earned honors after showcasing superb efforts in contests played in Week 10 of the 2009 season, including James Madison’s Justin Thorpe, New Hampshire’s Tom Manning, Rhode Island’s Shawn Leonard, Villanova’s Chris Whitney and William and Mary’s Jake Trantin.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Shawn Leonard, WR, Rhode Island
Leonard earns CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after turning in a record-breaking receiving effort in Rhode Island’s 55-42 shootout-loss at No. 8 New Hampshire Saturday. The senior wide receiver hauled in 10 catches for 275 yards and three touchdowns, all marking career high totals for the Stoughton, Mass., native. Leonard’s 275 receiving yards rank as the third-best single-game total in school history and are the fifth-highest receiving total in CAA Football history. Leonard has now garnered 411 receiving yards (19 catches) and five touchdowns in his last three games for the Rams.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week - Chris Whitney, QB, Villanova
Whitney garners CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping No. 4 Villanova knock off top-ranked Richmond 21-20 on the road Saturday. The junior completed 21-of-34 passes for 277 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ come-from-behind win. The Warminster, Pa., native is now 19-5 as a starter for the Wildcats after completing a game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass to Brandyn Harvey with 59 seconds left in Saturday’s game. Whitney, now 2-1 against Richmond in his career, helped the Wildcats end Richmond’s FCS-best 17-game win streak.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week - Jake Trantin, LB, William and Mary
Trantin, the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week, led No. 5 William and Mary to a 31-0 shutout win over Towson at home Saturday. The sophomore linebacker garnered a team-high eight tackles including five solo stops. The Severn, Md., native also had one stop behind the line of scrimmage and picked off a Towson pass in the second quarter. Trantin led a Tribe defense, now among the Top-3 nationally in both scoring and total defense, which limited Towson to just 201 yards of total offense and shutout an opponent for the first time since 2005.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week - Tom Manning, PK, New Hampshire
Manning, the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time this season, was true on a total of nine kicks in New Hampshire’s 55-42 shootout-win over Rhode Island Saturday. The Rome, N.Y., native hit two second-half field goals helping the Wildcats outpace the Rams. The first was a 42-yarder late in the third to push New Hampshire’s lead to eight, while his second was a 47-yard boot with 5:58 left to play. The senior was also true on seven PAT attempts in the game, giving him 13 points on the day.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week - Justin Thorpe, QB, James Madison
Thorpe earned Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season following his performance in James Madison’s 22-14 win over Maine Saturday. The Richmond, Va., native carried the ball 17 times for 83 yards and a score and also completed 9-of-13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. The redshirt-freshman’s touchdown run of 42 yards in the second quarter marked his longest of the season. Thorpe is now JMU’s all-time freshman quarterback rushing leader with 533 yards in 2009.

Newsome, Smith, Johnson and Hawk Earn Weekly Honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, Nov. 7. Elon running back Brandon Newsome was named Offensive Player of the Week while Samford linebacker Bryce Smith was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Week. Western Carolina running back Michael Johnson was tabbed as the Freshman of the Week, and Furman’s Trent Hawk was honored as Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brandon Newsome, Elon, Jr., RB
Newsome rushed for a career-high four touchdowns to lead No. 6 Elon past Western Carolina, 42-17, on Saturday afternoon. The junior, who notched his fifth-career 100-yard game with 143 yards rushing on 16 carries, scored in each quarter as the Phoenix improved to 8-1 on the season. Newsome also caught a pass for 16 yards to total 159 yards of offense on the day.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bryce Smith, Samford, Jr., LB
Smith led the Samford defense in a dominating performance in the Bulldogs’ 31-10 win over Georgia Southern. Smith led all tacklers with 12, and he had two key interceptions. Smith’s first interception came at the end of the first quarter and set up Samford’s first touchdown of the day. His second interception ended a GSU drive in the fourth quarter to put the game away for the Bulldogs.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Michael Johnson, Western Carolina, Fr., RB
Johnson rushed for a career-high 116 yards against No. 6 Elon, becoming the first rusher to top the century mark this season against the nation’s fourth-toughest run defense. He added 31 yards on four receptions for the Catamounts. Johnson had 93 yards in the first half alone.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Trent Hawk, Furman, Sr., P
Hawk booted eight punts for a 48.1 yard average in Furman’s 63-31 loss at Auburn on Saturday. Four of the senior’s eight punts traveled further than 50 yards, including a season-long 60-yard boot. Three of Hawk’s kicks landed inside the 20 yard line while none traveled into the end zone for a touchback. His 49-yard effort in the third quarter was fumbled at the Auburn 6 and recovered by Furman, leading to Paladins' first touchdown of the game.

Big Sky honors Waggener, Schrader Storms, McKnight
OGDEN, UTAH (Nov. 9, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has selected its football Players of the Week for games played on Saturday, Nov. 7. Northern Colorado quarterback Bryan Waggener is the Offensive Player of the Week. Sacramento State defensive back Zach Schrader and Idaho State linebacker A.J. Storms are the Co-Defensive Players of the Week. Montana kicker Brody McKnight is the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Waggener, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior from Chino, Calif., completed 35-of-58 passes for a season-best 325 yards and rushed for 53 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 38-35 loss to Sacramento State. Waggener rallied the Bears’ from a 31-point halftime deficit as he engineered five second-half scoring drives that were all at least 73 yards and took less than three minutes. The 35 completions is a single-game school record. Waggener’s 378 total yards of offense tied for the eighth-most in school history.
Schrader, a 6-1, 195-pound junior from Issaquah, Wash., registered 14 tackles, intercepted a pass and forced a fumble in the Hornets’ 38-35 win over Northern Colorado. He tied his career high in tackles and set a career mark with seven solo stops. He returned his second-quarter interception 24 yards to set up Sacramento State’s final touchdown of the first half. Sacramento State shut out the Bears in the first half, running their string of scoreless quarters to four.
Storms, a 6-foot, 208-pound sophomore from Meridian, Idaho, tallied 11 tackles – one for loss – and forced a fumble in Idaho State’s near upset of second-ranked Montana. Storms had seven solo tackles. Near the end of the third quarter, Storms stopped UM’s Chase Reynolds in the backfield, forcing a fumble on a fourth-and-1 play from the Idaho State 4-yard line. Idaho State’s defense held Montana to just one touchdown and two field goals. The Grizzlies entered the game averaging 37.1 points per game overall and 41.4 points in conference games.
McKnight, a 6-foot, 194-pound sophomore from Vancouver, B.C., made the game-winning 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift second-ranked Montana to a 12-10 win over Idaho State. McKnight also made a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter to put the Grizzlies up 3-0. McKnight’s game-winning field-goal was the second of his career.

MISSOURI VALLEY PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week are RB Deji Karim of Southern Illinois, S Lance Caldwell of Southern Illinois, and PK Zach Kutch of Illinois State. Kutch set a league record with six field goals in ISU's 25-7 win against Western Illinois. SIU, meanwhile, became the first league team to ever win at South Dakota State, and with the win secured at least a share of the league title and an automatic berth into the FCS playoffs.

Karim became the first all season to rush for over 100 yards against South Dakota State, as he had 127 yards on 21 carries in SIU’s 34-15 victory. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry and had long runs of 27 and 41 yards. The Jackrabbits came into the game only allowing 89 rushing yards a game, but behind Karim the Salukis marched to the tune of 280 yards on the ground. He went over 1,500 career yards rushing in the game, as he became the 19th Saluki ever to do so.

Caldwell accounted for both of SIU’s interceptions in the 34-15 win at South Dakota State on Saturday. His first one came late in the second quarter and he was able to return it 75 yards for a TD. It was the fifth-longest interception return for a scored in Saluki history. Caldwell’s second interception came in the third quarter when SDSU had the ball in the red zone. On a fourth-and-five at the SIU nine, Caldwell picked off Thomas O’Brien in the end zone to keep the Jacks off the scoreboard. Caldwell’s interceptions extended SIU’s streak to 10-straight games with at least on pick.

Young carried the ball 32 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns in UT Martin’s 28-7 road victory at Tennessee State. Young scored on a 4-yard run in the first quarter to put the Skyhawks up 7-0 and added a 1-yard run with five minutes to play to put his squad up 21-0. The touchdowns were his sixth and seventh of the season; Young ranks second on the team in scoring (44 points). It was Young’s first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Young now has 1,510 rushing yards in his career and is just 101 yards away from becoming the 10th all-time leading rusher in Skyhawk history.

Henderson has had double-digit tackles in five straight games and now ranks first in the Conference and 27th nationally with 9.89 tackles/game. Henderson is just 23 tackles away from third place on the Gamecocks career Division I tackles list. Henderson and the Jax State defense have not allowed an offensive touchdown over the last nine quarters.

The All-American and Buck Buchanan Award candidate Lane added a new twist to his stat sheet when he dropped back an intercepted a pass that he returned 21 yards for a touchdown in Murray State’s 27-17 victory over Austin Peay. It was his first career interception in 41 career games. The play came with just over three minutes left in the game and pushed the Racer advantage to 27-10. Lane also added four tackles, two sacks, a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry. Lane now has 11 sacks on the season and ranks first nationally (1.22/game) in that category. His 1.89 tackles-for-loss per game ranks second nationally and his 0.33 fumbles recovered/game is 11th. Lane now was 29 sacks in his collegiate career.

The true freshman walk-on Brockman made his collegiate debut in front of his hometown crowd and led Murray State to a 27-17 victory over Austin Peay on Saturday. Brockman completed 18-of-33 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown in helping the Racers win in its final home game of the season. Brockman tossed his first collegiate touchdown, a 25-yard pass to Prince Nwagbara, with 22 seconds left in the first half, cutting the then deficit to 10-7. Brockman became the first true freshman to start under center for Murray State in over 25 years.

Great West Players of the Week from Week No. 10
Saturday’s games had big implications on the Great West Conference race for the title. UC Davis’ 23-10 win over Cal Poly, coupled with Southern Utah’s 45-21 loss at South Dakota, set up a game for the championship this Saturday. UC Davis (2-1 in Great West play) will host North Dakota (2-1 GWC) for the title.
South Dakota running back Chris Ganious led a ground game that took the hope of a conference championship away from Southern Utah, while Mike Morales led a UC Davis defense and kicker Sean Kelley connected on three field goals that also ended the title hopes of Cal Poly.

Chris Ganious rushed for 193 yards in USD’s win over Southern Utah on Saturday. A workhorse from the start, the sopho¬more running back averaged 7.7 yards on 25 carries and posted a 45-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter. He also caught three passes for 41 yards.

Mike Morales finished with a game-high 13 tackles, including 11 solo, as UC Davis earned the victory over Cal Poly. Morales had 12 tackles (10 solo) during the first half and stopped Jordan Yocum with a solo stop at the 1 after a one-yard gain in the second quarter and Cal Poly leading 10-7. The Mustangs did not score on the drive (missed field goal) and did not score the remainder of the game. It was Morales’ third double-digit tackles effort of the year and tied his season-high of 13 stops earned at Boise State. His 248 total tackles rank No. 4 all-time at UC Davis, and he is also tied for No. 2 in solo stops (131) and is No. 7 in assists (117) (records kept since 1987).

Sean Kelley converted three field goals, including a career-long 52-yarder in the third quarter that tied a school record and gave UC Davis the lead for good during its win over Cal Poly. Kelley also converted from 42 yards earlier in the third quarter to tie the game 10-10 and then made one from 35 yards in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring while adding a pair of extra points. He kicked three field goals for the second time this year (Western Oregon) and has made his last eight attempts. Kelley has 22 career field goals, tying him for No. 6 all-time at UC Davis while his 12 field goals this season are tied for fifth-most. His 52-yarder is tied for 8th-longest in the FCS this season.

Southland Conference Announces Football Players of the Week
Pair of Southeastern players honored alongside players from McNeese State and Nicholls
FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern linebacker Mark Newbill and punter Beau Mothe were named the Southland Conference defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively, after guiding the Lions to a 27-0 victory at Northwestern State, the league office announced Monday. Newbill shared the defensive honor with Nicholls defensive back Jordan Nevels. McNeese State tailback Toddrick Pendland was named the Southland’s offensive player of the week.
Offensive Player of the Week: Toddrick Pendland, McNeese State
McNeese State tailback Toddrick Pendland, who had missed all or parts of the three previous games, returned in a big way last Saturday against Sam Houston State and helped lead the Cowboys to a 63-42 victory. The senior from Newton, Texas (Newton), ran for a season-high 171 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries. He also caught one pass for 24 yards. He scored three of his touchdowns in the first half and averaged 8.6 yards per run. Pendland is the national scoring leader in the Football Championship Subdivision, averaging 11.75 points per game. This is the second player of the week award for Pendland this season.

Defensive Co-Player of the Week: Jordan Nevels, Nicholls
Nicholls defensive back Jordan Nevels led the Colonels to a near upset of Stephen F. Austin last Saturday. The senior from Fort Thomas, Ky. (Highlands), recorded 12 total tackles (6 solo) and forced three turnovers. Nevels forced a Lumberjack fumble at the Colonel 1-yard line, saving a score in the second half, and also intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter on the Colonel 5-yard line to prevent another. His final turnover, a forced fumble, took place on third-and-short with less than 90 seconds to play. His 12 tackles, two forced fumbles and interception were career highs for him. This is the first player of the week award for Nevels this season.
Defensive Co-Player of the Week: Mark Newbill, Southeastern Louisiana
Southeastern Louisiana linebacker Mark Newbill recorded 14 tackles, including seven solos, in Southeastern’s 27-0 victory at Northwestern State. It was the Lions’ first win in Natchitoches, La., since 1976 and their first shutout since a 28-0 win over Western Kentucky in 1984. The junior from Monore, La. (Neville), had one tackle for loss and led a defense that allowed 261 yards total offense and forced two turnovers. This is Newbill’s second player of the week award this season.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Beau Mothe, Southeastern Louisiana
Southeastern Louisiana punter Beau Mothe punted a season-high nine times, averaging 42.2 yards per attempt, in the Lions’ 27-0 victory at Northwestern State. The freshman from New Orleans, La. (Jesuit), placed five punts inside the Demons’ 20, including three inside the 10. He had two punts downed at the Northwestern State 1 and another at the Demons’ 5. Mothe had three punts of more than 50 yards, including a season-high 54-yard boot in the second quarter. This is the first player of the week award for Mothe this season.

MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY FOOTBALL HONORS
NSU’s Branche and DSU’s Strums Earn Top Weekly Honors
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., November 9, 2009 – Norfolk State’s DeAngleo Branche was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Jerome Strums of Delaware State was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Lewis Kindle of North Carolina A&T earned Rookie of the Week honors while Mike Maloney, also of Delaware State, earned Offensive Lineman of the Week accolades. LeRoy Vann of Florida A&M was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.
Branche (RB, 5-11, 200, r-Jr., Norfolk, Va.) rushed for a season-high 145 yards on 19 carries with a rushing touchdown as the Spartans defeated the Bears, 31-23. He also caught his first career TD pass on a 16-yard screen play in the third quarter.
Strums (DB, 6-0, 175, r-Sr., Windsor, Conn.) recorded two turnovers in the Hornets 24-21 win over Winston-Salem State. Strums scooped up a botched pitch and returned it 21 yards to the end zone to give the Hornets a 14-0 lead with just six minutes left in the first quarter. He also recorded an interception and a solo tackle as the Hornets went on to win their last road game of the season.
Kindle (QB, 6-2, 180, Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) completed 16-of-30 passes for 206 yards with two touchdowns in his first career start for the Aggies. He also carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards and a rushing touchdown as the Aggies loss to Florida A&M, 27-31.
Maloney (RT, 6-6, 290, Sr., Chicago, Ill.) received a grade of 98-percent for his efforts against Winston-Salem State. Maloney led the DSU offensive line that accounted for 255 yards of total offense including 153 yards on the ground. He also recorded 11 pancake blocks and committed no penalties in his 20th consecutive start.
Vann (DB, 5-9, 185, Sr., Tampa, Fla.) recorded four punt returns for 81 yards including a 51-yard return for a touchdown, his fifth of the season. He also recorded four kickoff returns for 51 yards. Vann’s touchdown breaks the institution’s single season record and ties an NCAA Division I FCS and MEAC single season high for returns with five (5), set by North Carolina A&T’s Curtis Deloach in 2001.
Other Top Performances
Willie Carter (HOW) caught five passes for 91 yards and one touchdown in the Bison’s disappointing loss to South Carolina State.
Blake Erickson (SCSU) converted 5-of-5 PAT and 2-of-3 field goals, including a career long 44 yarder in the Bulldogs 43-13 win over Howard.
Carlton Ford (NSU) recorded five pancake blocks and graded out at 86-percent of his assignments as led a dominate offensive effort against Morgan State with 379 total yards.
Ronell Ferguson (SCSU) posted four tackles, two solo, with two for a loss of four yards and helped spark a change that limited Howard to just 62 yards on the ground.
Corwin Hammond (NSU) registered a career-high 11 tackles, five solo, with two for a loss of 10 yards.
Arando Jamison (HOW) tallied 10 tackles, three solo, with one for a loss of one yard. He also recorded three deflected passes and forced a fumble in the loss to South Carolina State.
Arnett James (SCSU) recorded four tackles, two for a loss, with two quarterback hurries and an interception in the Bulldogs win over Howard.
Jaashawn Jones (DSU) carried the ball 35 times for 143 yards and one touchdown in the Hornets 24-21 win over Winston-Salem State.
Malcolm Long (SCSU) completed 21-of-33 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs 43-13 win over Howard. He also rushed six times for 25 yards in the victory.
Ryan Lewis (B-CU) recorded 103 all-purpose yards while competing in three separate roles for the Wildcats including wide receiver, and punt and kickoff returner.
Nick Lochner (DSU) registered five punts for 178 yards (35.6 avg) with two inside the 20 yard-line in the Hornets victory over the Rams.
Brian Mann (MSU) accounted for 90 yards on special teams including 61 kickoff return yards and 40 punt return yards in the Bears loss to Norfolk State.
Christopher Sands (FAMU) graded out at 98-percent of his assignments and aided the Rattlers account for 367 yards of total offense. He also added three pancake blocks with one sack yielded.
Kemar Scarlett (MSU) finished 3-for-3 in field goals with boots of 34, 38 and 52 yards and was perfect 2-for-2 in extra point attempts in the Bears loss to the Spartans.

Michael Williams (B-CU) recorded a remarkable game against the Hampton Pirates with a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter to give the Wildcats an early lead. He also recorded three tackles, two solo, and an interception late in the final minutes of play to preserve the victory.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Charleston Southern quarterback A.J. Toscano (Pico River, Calif.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Coastal Carolina defensive back Josh Norman (Greenwood, S.C.) has been selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for games played during Week 10 of the 2009 regular-season, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Liberty kicker Matt Bevins (Newport News, Va.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week, while Presbyterian College running back Lance Byrd (Jacksonville, Fla.) has been selected as The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Toscano amassed 351 yards of total offense and was responsible for five touchdowns in the Buccaneers’ win at Presbyterian College. He was 18-of-32 passing for 290 yards and four touchdowns, and was the team’s leading rusher with 61 yards and a score. Toscano threw a touchdown pass in each quarter and scored on an 11-yard run in the third stanza. He averaged 9.1 yards per pass attempt and did not throw an interception for the second-straight game.
Norman tied a Big South single-game record with three interceptions – all in the second half -- in Coastal Carolina’s home win over Gardner-Webb. His first interception ended a GWU scoring threat deep in Coastal territory, and set up the Chanticleers’ first touchdown of the second half. Norman’s second pick ended Gardner-Webb’s next-to-last scoring drive on its first play, and his final interception sealed Coastal’s victory as he picked off a pass in the end zone with less than 30 seconds to play. Norman now has a Big South single-season record seven interceptions on the year.
Bevins tied the Big South single-game record with four field goals against VMI Saturday, and finished with a career-best 16 points against the Keydets. Bevins averaged 40.8 yards on his four field goals, as he hit from 42, 38, 40 and 43 yards, and is now just the second player in Big South history to make four field goals in a game twice in a career. He also was perfect on 4-of-4 PAT attempts. Bevins now ranks second nationally in field goals per game (1.89) and ninth nationally in scoring (9.22 points per game).
In his first career start, Byrd rushed for a school-record 274 yards and two touchdowns against Charleston Southern, the second-highest single-game total in Big South history and the most in a Conference game. He established a PC Division I record with 159 rushing yards in the first half, and in the fourth quarter, he broke the 16-year school record of 254 rushing yards on a draw play. Byrd averaged 8.3 yards on his 33 carries, had 10 rushes of greater than 10 yards -- including four carries for more than 20 yards, and finished the day with 286 all-purpose yards.
Patriot League Announces Football Players of the Week
Lafayette and Holy Cross Each Have Two Winners
Center Valley, Pa. - Lafayette and Holy Cross have each won their first four Patriot League Football games, and the pair that will meet for the League title on Saturday were also even in the weekly honors category with two apiece on Monday.
Lafayette senior quarterback Rob Curley earns the League's Offensive Player of the Week award, while teammate Davis Rodriguez is named Special Teams Player of the Week for a record fifth time in his career. Holy Cross senior linebacker Andrew Cialino is the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman running back Eddie Houghton won his third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award this year.
Curley set a Lafayette record and tied a Patriot League mark with seven touchdown passes in the Leopards' 56-49 win over Colgate. He also threw for a career-high 373 yards in winning his second consecutive weekly honor. Cialino made a career-high 15 tackles, including 12 solo stops, to lift Holy Cross to a 24-20 win at Lehigh. Rodriguez made both of his field goal attempts and all six of his extra point tries in Lafayette's victory, while Houghton ran for 38 yards and a touchdown in the Crusaders' triumph.
Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week
Rob Curley, Lafayette Sr., QB, 6'1, 200, Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross Curley earns the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honor for the second straight time after a record-setting performance in leading No. 25/24 Lafayette past No. 18/20 Colgate, 56-49, in a key League contest on Saturday. Curley completed 18-of-31 passes for 373 yards and seven touchdowns, tying the mark for passing touchdowns in a game set by Holy Cross' Jeff Wiley on Sept. 26, 1987 against Lehigh. He joined Wiley and Fordham's Kevin Eakin (2003 vs. Rhode Island) as the only Patriot Leaguers with seven touchdowns responsible for in a game. The touchdowns went to five different players, including two in the fourth quarter to break a 42-42 tie. The 373 yards were a career high, the third straight week that Curley has set a personal best for passing yards. Curley has thrown for 2,432 yards with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions and is completing 68 percent of his passes this year, marks that place him second nationally in passing efficiency. Curley earns his third career Offensive weekly honor.
Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week
Andrew Cialino, Holy Cross Sr., LB, 6'1, 230, Medford, N.J./Shawnee Cialino tallied 15 tackles, including 12 solo stops, to lead a solid defensive effort at No. 13/14 Holy Cross remained undefeated in the Patriot League with a 24-20 win at Lehigh. The total and solo tackle marks were both career highs, and he now has 68 total tackles this year.

He made field goals of 33 and 34 yards in the first half to give Lafayette a 27-21 lead at the half, and nailed all six of his extra point attempts. Rodriguez wins the award for the second time in the past three weeks and third this season.

Eddie Houghton, Holy Cross Fr., RB, 5'11, 220, Toronto, Ontario/St. Michael's Houghton receives his third Rookie of the Week honor this year, and first since claiming the initial two awards of the season, after carrying seven times for 38 yards and a touchdown in Holy Cross' 24-20 win at Lehigh on Saturday. The 12-yard touchdown run put Holy Cross ahead, 10-7, in the second quarter. He also caught a pass for three yards. Houghton has 281 rushing yards and four touchdowns this season.

Brown freshman defensive back A.J. CRUZ (Lake Forest, Calif.) finished the game with a team-high nine tackles, including seven solo stops, a tackle for a loss of three yards and broke-up three passes, including another one in the end zone in the Bears’ 35-21 win over Yale. With Yale knocking down the door of the Brown end zone with 3:23 left in the game, the Bears needed a big play. A touchdown would draw the Elis to within a touchdown of the Bears. On first down and six at the Brown six-yard line, Cruz jumped high into the air and made a leaping one-hand interception to shut the door and help seal with road win for Brown.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth sophomore placekicker FOLEY SCHMIDT (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) came through with two big three field goals, after going four straight games without a single field goal attempt, and two point-after-touchdowns to help Dartmouth capture a 20-17 double-overtime victory over Cornell. With 2:17 to play, he drilled a 26-yard field goal to tie the game at 10, which ended up forcing overtime. In the first extra period, he contributed the PAT to tie the game at 17 before launching a season-long 40-yard field goal that turned out to be the game-winner.

Huck ran for three touchdowns and passed for another two as Butler remained unbeaten with a 31-28 PFL victory at Dayton, Saturday. He rallied the Bulldogs from a 7-0 first quarter deficit with a pair of second quarter touchdowns and they would not trail the game’s remainder. Huck completed 12-of-29 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns and car¬ried the ball 12 times for 54 yards and three touchdowns. He had two seven yard touchdown carries and a 36-yard TD sprint. His seven-yard scoring pass to Dan Bohrer gave the Bulldogs the lead for good and he later added a 16-yard touchdown pass to Carter Wiley.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Peter Kidwell, Davidson
Sophomore, Defensive Back, Marshall, Va.
Kidwell’s 30-yard interception return for a touchdown got Davidson on the board first in a 34-27 PFL victory at San Diego, Saturday. He also had four tackles (two solo) in the contest. It was the first Davidson interception return for a touchdown since the 2007 campaign. Kidwell has three in¬terceptions this season with 105 return yards.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jason Myers, Marist
Freshman, Kicker, Chula Vista, Calif.
Myers career-long 37-yard field goal sailed through the up¬rights with one second remaining pushed Marist to a 23-21 non-conference win against Georgetown, Saturday. His field goal rectified his lone mistake of the day, a missed PAT on Marist’s last touchdown drive. He made 2-of-3 extra-point tries on the day. Myers also handled kickoff duties, averag¬ing 59.0 yards on five kickoffs, including a touchback.

Doscher produced more than 300 yards of total offense for the third time in four weeks to power Wagner past Central Connecticut State. The freshman quarterback was responsible for all five of Wagner’s touchdowns in a 32-27 comeback victory that extended the Seahawks’ win streak to four and lifted them into a first-place tie in the NEC standings. After the Blue Devils scored twice to claim a 27-20 lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, Doscher answered back by engineering a pair of touchdown drives within the final 10:15. First, he capped a six-play, 53-yard drive by rushing into the end zone from two yards out to cut the deficit to one. The rookie signal caller fumbled the snap on the ensuing extra point, but would do his best to make up for it. With 1:35 remaining on the clock and the ball at Wagner’s 37-yard line, Doscher rushed for 24 yards and passed for another 39 in guiding his Seahawks to the game-winning score. Doscher, who finished 11-of-16 passing for 174 yards and three TDs, completed the comeback with a 15-yard scoring strike to Lon Woods. He added another 130 yards and two scores on 15 rushes.

Elias Navarro, Robert Morris

Navarro was at the forefront of a defensive effort that held Albany to its lowest offensive output (217 total yards) since the 2006 regular season finale. Robert Morris’ junior linebacker totaled seven tackles (2 solo), a sack, a pass break-up, and a key interception in the 13-10 road win. The 210-pound defender made six of his tackles along with two big plays after halftime. With the Great Danes threatening in the red zone on the opening drive of the second half, Navarro intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards to tilt the field position battle in RMU”s favor. Navarro ended another Albany drive by sacking the quarterback during a 3rd-and-9 situation on the final play of the third quarter.

Zambarano’s first start this season resulted in a strong defensive effort worthy of weekly honors. The sophomore linebacker accounted for a career-high 11 tackles (10 solo), three tackles for loss, and a pass break-up in Sacred Heart’s 24-14 NEC win over Bryant. Zambarano made two huge hits on back-to-back plays with SHU clinging to a 17-14 lead in the third quarter. Forcing Bryant to punt on its opening drive of the second half, Zambarano stuffed the Bulldogs’ ball carrier for no gain before sacking the quarterback for a 10-yard loss on the next play.

Clawson claims NEC Special Teams honors for the second consecutive week after his 20-yard field goal dealt Albany a 13-10 loss as time expired. The junior placekicker has hit five field goal attempts during Robert Morris’ current three-game win streak. Clawson’s 39-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half extended the Colonials’ lead over the two-time defending NEC champion Great Danes to 10-3. The only miss in his past six attempts was a 46-yard try in the third quarter against Albany. It would have been the second-longest in the NEC this season.
