how often does this happen??

Post by oducampus »

just a question guys :coffee:

I am not boasting about our recruit, but how often does this happen??

Someone who's being recruited by Pitt, Connecticut, Boston College, Virginia, Temple, Marshall, East Carolina and a host of ACC schools in several different positions i.e defensive back, corner back, safety . But then chooses an FCS school (ODU) cause they offered him to play in a position that he likes i.e running back. ??? Does other FCS schools also get their recruits this way???

Sure, happens all the time. Delaware just landed a 3-star running back from my current hometown who was being recruited by FBS schools (Stanford & Rutgers). One of the reasons he chose Delaware is because he wants to stay a running back. Because of his size (<6 ft, <180 lbs), the "big" boys could only guarantee him a shot at DB.

Yes that does actually happen quite a bit and particularly at the RB adn QB spots.

It happens quite a bit and it happens a lot for transfers as well.
Brandon Jacobs is a prime example. He started at Auburn (after JUCO) and they wanted him to be a DL. Transferred to Southern Illinois because they were willing to allow him to stay at RB.

We have an oustanding CB that started out at Iowa (they probably could have used him this year  ) He got a medical redshirt this year though, so we have him one more season.
One of our (Jr) LB was at AZ and our starting RG came over from OU.

Our freshman PK was recruited by 4 or 5 Big XII schools, plus TCU. As was our freshman RB, that we had to remove a redshirt from. (not the same schools though)

Good to hear you are getting some of these guys already :thumb:

UNI has more than a couple players that had offers/looks from Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Louisville, etc...

Nice to see ODU getting players like that early on

We consider ourselves very lucky to have such success this early, on the recruiting front and on the attendance front. Our win-loss record is obviously inflated due to our schedule, but overall we are thrilled with our infant program and look forward to watching our team mature and play the upper level programs.

I didn't know about recruits like the one we just got, so the education here is valuable for me as well. It makes sense that a kid would want to play in their comfort zone, and that FCS schools would make that possible more so than the FBS schools. Their loss, and more for us FCS guys, right?

A couple examples you guys may be familiar with are Rodney Landers, Scotty McGee, and Armanti Edwards. Coming out of HS, Rodney was recruited by UVA as a DB based on his size and athleticism, but he wanted to play quarterback. JMU offered him that spot, so he committed to us. Scotty was recruited by Tennessee as a CB, but he wanted the chance to play running back and Mickey promised him that. He then nearly transferred after Mickey switched him to CB, and that bait-and-switch is something I've never been ok with.

And App fans can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Edwards was a receiver in high school before switching to quarterback his senior (?) year. He got offers to play WR from the IA schools, but App State was the only one who would allow him to play QB.

Not true, he committed to GSU before our coach was fired. He was going to back up Jayson Foster. After the coaching change he went with Appy.

Our freshman kicker, Zach Brown chose us because all the offers from the higher schools wanted him to kick. He did not want to kick, he wanted to play wide receiver. We thus recruited him to be a wide receiver. After the Oregon State game in which we had a terrible time kicking the ball, we held open tryouts among the team, and Brown won the job. As for how he's done so far, Portland State has had seven field goals of 50+ yards in the history of playing football, and Brown has kicked two of them this year. With the field goal against Montana State, he has set the school record for most field goals in a season. Sounds like he is going to stay with it, too.

Ok, reading up on it some more, and from the Savannah paper something similar:
The guy recruiting me left so that changed everything," said Edwards, who opted out of his scheduled visit to GSU and visited Appalachian State instead
http://savannahnow.com/sports/2009-10-2 ... hian-state

And he was recruited by IA as a receiver:
After receiving offers from most of the Southern Conference schools, Armanti committed to ASU. Late offers came in from Clemson, Vanderbilt and Memphis, who wanted him to play wide receiver or cornerback. He stuck with his commitment to the Mountaineers.

“I feel comfortable playing quarterback, you know? I just wanted to stick with it and play the position that I wanted to play and not what somebody else wanted me to play.”

I know he held an offer, and seriously considered it, but I'm not sure he ever verbally committed to GSU.
