CAA Only a 4-bid Conference?

Post by AZGrizFan »

With Delaware's loss today, and UMass losing by 10 to Maine inside 8 minutes to go, it's looking more and more like the CAA will only get in 4 teams this year. And with Weber's loss (and unlikely to win out against Cal Poly and NAU), the BSC will in all likelihood only get 2 teams in (most likely the EWU/NAU winner). Where does that other at-large bid come from?

Does Maine get any credit for leading at the half of every game this season? :|

Richmond/Nova/W&M/UNH should be in (although they have a few games between them left to play)

Richmond - already in
Nova - unless they crap the bed and lose out to Richmond (likely), Towson (unlikely) and Delaware (depends on which Hen team takes the field) are in
W&M has Towson, UNH and Richmond left, so still a couple of loss possibilities, but are in unless they lose out.
UNH - has WM, URI and Maine left.

Delaware has to win out against Hofstra, Navy and Nova to get 7 wins
UMass has to run the table to get 7 wins.

I agree with the notion that the CAA only gets 4 teams into the playoffs after today's outcomes...

What about the Southland? If SFA and McNeese win out, then they tied for the title. SFA gets the autobid due to their win over McNeese. How could a 9-2 McNeese team be left out, especially if App gets a seed?

Even with this loss, if Delaware wins out they'll still get a bid.

Its more likely that they won't, and if they don't, the CAA will only get 4 in.

Who gets the other bid? Who the hell knows at this point, but UNI and Cal Poly's chances have just increased tremendously.

Liberty would have the best chance from a non-major conference, but that chance is still pretty low.

After Liberty you'd have FAMU (9-2), Central Ct. (10-1), Colgate (10-1) or Lafayette (9-2). I can't really see any of those teams getting in.

EDIT: well forget Cal Poly, they just blew it too.

Today helped whatever chances LU has quite a bit. Maybe from 5% before to 15% now.

I would love to see CCSU, but I think the chances of FAMU or a second PL team has a better shot.

A lot of loses by playoff bubble teams today does change a lot though.

The new name for the playoffs is the nCAA National Championship, featuring Northeastern and Towson. Didn't you guys read the press release?

No, because you were tied with Delaware at the half. Still an interesting statistic though.

If EWU takes care of business against SUU and NAU, EWU will likely garner the spot that would've gone to either UMass or Delaware before today's games.

I think so as well. Unless of course Delaware wins out. If Delaware wins out, I still think Delaware gets in. They'd have wins over Nova and a good Navy team on their resume. No way they sit home.

Still a big "if", IMO. NAU will be a much tougher game than PSU or any of the teams we have beat to this point. The bye couldn't come at a better time. SUU will potentially be a tough game as well.

Still, if we go 8-3, I would have a hard time seeing us kept out of the play-offs.

Umm.. SFA lost today  and haven't played SELA yet (who beat UCA today)
McNeese lost to SFA, just got by SELA and haven't played UCA or TXST yet.

No one in the SLC is set up to take an extra playoff spot, yet. It's a merry-go-round of who has beaten who right now. The dust may not settle until after the final game of the season. Maybe we'll have a second team worthy, at that time

IF we and SFA win out we get the auto-bid then, perhaps, we get a second team.

LU doesn't have a shot now. They would if JMU was one of the CAA 4 teams thats going to get in.

Even if UMASS wins out, they still have 4 losses against bad teams
JMU has 5 losses
Although Delaware has 3 or 4, someone will get ahead of themImage

I think it'd be more accurate to say that UMass has bad losses against mostly good teams, all on the road. The 4 point loss to Kansas State (currently leading the Big 12 North) doesn't really hurt us, it just doesn't help us. The 3 FCS losses to Richmond, Delaware and Maine look bad though because UMass completely fell apart in those games (17 turnovers).

Wait, is the CAA only getting four teams in a sign of the Apocalypse?

Funny. It wasn't more than two years ago that just about everyone outside the CAA said there was absolutely no chance in hell the CAA would get 5 teams in the playoffs.... ;) So would 'only' 4 teams in the playoffs be a down year for the CAA? 8-)

Cue the 'But the CAA has over 40 teams' dumbass comments...

Nah, right now they have more "playoff callibar" teams than the other conferences. That will likely change eventually and another conference will be the power conference/ association (sorry I do that all the time). Anyways, there is no debate about the CAA being the best conference/ association right now...only getting four in isn't a "down year" for the CAA, just a down year for Delawhere? and UmASS, and an "up year" for William and Mark. :D

The only reason I started this thread was because a week ago it looked like a foregone conclusion that the CAA would get in 5 teams, and there was talk of even a SIXTH team from the CAA sneaking in. Now that it appears a given that they're going to be a 4-bid league, that opens up another at-large spot.

But you're right about the 40 teams comment.
