"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. Not quite, it's probably more accurate that people home school their kids because, in general, government schools suck.
most homeschoolers are evanga-nutters who want to indoctrinate their kids - they dont like what the public schools teach... things like "facts" and "science" and "reality" and "race mixing"
Then why do home-schooled kids almost always do better on standardized tests than public school kids?

If that's true, and it probably is, it's because a however-many-kids-you-have to one student/teacher ratio is more effective than a 20:1 ratio (or worse) in public schools. Same reason the social skills of home-schoolers is worse when the student-to-student-body ratio is one to however-many-siblings-you-have.

Home schooling sounds like a great idea if you're a parent who wanted to get a pet instead of having a kid, and you think that putting them in actual cages and leg irons is just a bit too much.

You want to force teachers to teach to the content of some dumbass govt mandated test or allow them the freedom to teach to the students abilities, desires, etc etc. Standard tests are a pretty poor indicator of either learning ability or teaching ability.

You only scratched the surface and missed on the two most obvious and drastic differences. Teacher Unions run and rule government schools with an iron fist, and state sponsored colleges have to face competition from other colleges, one thing government schools DO NOT have to worry about.

That's usually what homeschooling haters say when someone points that out. Do you really think homeschooling instructors are just drilling their kids for the tests? Nope, that's what the public schools are doing with NCLB, AYP, and all that nonsense. Saying that you know your sh^t but can't take tests would be like me saying that Indiana State is a good football team, but just can't do well in game situations. If you know your sh^t, you will do well on tests. Period. There's no magic way to ace tests without mastering all the content knowledge.

BULLSHIT

I got through college with very little effort and a GPA about 3.8 because I knew how to take tests. Got through high school with even less effort, taking mostly all college prep classes. If what you say is true, then explain to me why teaching students take entire courses on how to write tests, how to write lesson plans and the like.

Sure wish the homeschool wacko's had to meet the same criteria in order to be an "educator" that any other teacher, public or private school, does. Any one claiming to be able to educate children should be forced to have a state license, just like any other teacher.

Because education isn't a true academic discipline and most teachers and education students are dumber than bags of hammers and need to be spoon-fed.

Right, because state licenses mean so much. Where would Henry Ford or Henry David Thoreau have been without education from licensed teachers who had Education M.A.'s?

Then if state credentials mean so little, I think I'll open me up a home vascectomy clinic. I gots me a cleaver and a big oak block, might need a few mo rolls o' paper towls. You wanna be my first client, I'll give ya one hell of a discount.

Better yet, I'll start my own home OB/GYN clinic, hell, I've watched hundreds of hours of gonzo porn, I'm more than qualified.

Parochial schools? Are you serious?

Parochial schools or no more competition for government schools than private schools are.
C'mon man you can do better than that. :ohno:

We evidently agree that tenured professors are a menace in their own right, but they in no way compare to the power that a government teachers union has. I sure would love to see where a Union for tenured professors was formed.
