IMO, there are 3 reasons why Montana has the fans it has.

1. Winning<--AZ has a great point about FBS games being a short term fix.
2. Montana football is the highest level of competition the state has.
3. Top Notch Stadium/the fact that they've made small upgrades over the years.. the fans can identify with the program more bc they can say 'i remember when the endzone seats weren't here ect...

This is how it all ties together...
FCS teams should not have to play FBS game just for money, dont let the fact that its VERY COMMON confuse you. The real fix is Home Game Revenue. You get that by having a consistenly good team & having a nice stadium that the fans are proud of. Notice when you google WaGriz stadium, you find 100 images, when you search Nottingham field you cant find anything... a good stadium + good team makes proud paying fans.

Blackfalkan, you have astutely stated why some Griz fans don't feel we need to play FBS teams.

Wildcat Ryan wrote:On the subject of Montana having a great fanbase, WE KNOW, good for them, we dont have to be reminded of it every freaking day. Its easy to have a great fanbase, when your an FCS team in an FCS dominated state, in Utah, there are 3 FBS schools within about 100 miles of each other, and 5 total division 1 teams. When your not the biggest show in the state, you wont get as big a crowds as the big shows, BYU and Utah they are the biggest show, they are all the media talk about. You can talk about fans from other states, but what does that prove? "Hey I saw a Montana fan in Florida" ok so a guy that lived in Montana moves to Florida and Montana is well known? I have 3 friends, who are ironically a LameYU, a Utah and a UTah State fan, NONE of them new who Montana was before i told them, despite Montana coming to Ogden every year.
Bet you anything Weber's basketball victories over Michigan State and North Carolina are more known about than Montana's 2 FCS National Titles.

Having said that I congradulate Montana for having built a powerhouse program, that has continually dominated the Big Sky, and contended well for the NC. But Im leaving it at that, If Montana is embarassed by being in the Big SKy, then they should leave.

On the subject of EWU, dont let thier schedule fool you, THEY ARE GOOD. Weber will have thier hands full, and Im still sticking with my prediction of an offensive shootout.
Wow. Where to begin. You complain about not being the biggest show in the state and having trouble drawing fans, then your program shoots itself in its foot EVERY YEAR for a few hundred thousand dollars. AS I said, short term solution to a long term problem. Our fanbase wasn't built in a a day, and if we had 15 .500 seasons under our belt, Wa/Griz would still seat 12,500. Not sure where you're going with the whole "weber basketball" thing....known about more, by WHO?

Finally, nobody has ever said Montana is "embarrassed by being in the big sky". But we would love nothing more than to play to packed houses everywhere we go., and the solution to the almighty dollar ain't rocket science. Yeah, you start with one strike against you by having more competition, but I still believe that if you went 9-2 or 10-1 every (or most) year, the fan base would come. Maybe not immediately, but it would come, and the need to play FBS schools to prop up the budget would go away.

Hell, go out and find some rich Weber Grad and have them donate a bunch of money to eliminate the need....

Yep, that's damn good.

We've been hearing for years how EWU grads far outnumber any other school in the Spokane market. So it has something to do with how the university markets its product. And there was certainly a time when you could walk up to the kennel 10 minutes before game time and purchase a ticket to a Gonzaga basketball game.

But if there was a PAC 10 school located in Stevensville and a WAC school in Hamilton, I'm guessing that despite its success, Montana wouldn't have the same attendance numbers.

It's a little bit of all the factors mentioned.

In looking at the one common opponent, ISU, Weber gave up 379 yards, 21 first downs, and 17 points with a + 3 takeaway ratio. EWU gave 271 yards, 15 first downs and 3 points and was even in takeaways.

In looking at the conference only stats, Eastern has the edge especially in comparing defenses. Weber's #7 ranking in rushing defense and +1 turnover margin to EWU's + 6 stand out.

Running Jones early and often would make sense to keep WSU's offense off the field, but I think EWU is at its best throwing first to set up the run. I wouldn't be surprised to see us open up the playbook a little bit.

Clear, cold, windy, perfect football weather and the first game we've had with all the students back in town.

This is a winnable game for either team, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Eastern makes a statement.

Home team, homer pick:

And one other quick thread derail.

Success and fan loyalty have a great deal to do with Montana's attendance, how else do you explain 5,000 Griz fans making a trip to Cheney every other year. Think about it, Montana's 250 mile traveling attendance is as good as many BSC team's home attendance.

Good points, BF. I do not begrudge Montana the success of their football program. It is well deserved.

However, the UM program is not a template for success in any market. Each program is unique and must be promoted based on its own strengths and weaknesses.

One thing I have been really impressed with is how well Nichols has managed the game so far this year. He is definitely playing like a Senior. His numbers may not be as big as they have been in the past, but I attribute that to the fact that we've had a pretty solid running game this year. He's not forcing things, and just isn't making a lot of mistakes. I agree that we may see some different things this weekend on offense. WSU will probably be keyed in on Jones, but we have the ability to to stretch the field with Boyce and Co, so as long as we keep it balanced, I think we should be ok.

No we don't, but we do around our region of sports fans. My argument is that because there is no other major sports team to draw a fan base in Montana, virtually everyone is a fan of the Griz so when there's a game, people from all over go. And because there are many college/pro sports teams around WA/OR, team/sport affiliations are spread all over amongst fans across the area.
NFL plays on Sundays.....Griz draw 26,000 - Cats draw 14,000 (NAIA) Carroll College draw 5,000+ plus other NAIA teams and you may say so what? Montana only has 900k people, not even the population of Seattle area so don't tell me you cant do better in Cheney...you can

That was one of the worst all-time calls I have ever seen in a BSC game.

Refs hand Weebs the ball inside the 10, but still held to a FG.

EWU needs to make some serious adjustments at half-time, or we are going to get absolutely smoked in this one. Offense can't do anything.
