I guess I view it entirely differently. I always felt if I worked hard I would ultimately get rewarded through promotion, making myself qualified for a higher paying job at another organization, etc. See, THAT'S what I call work ethic, and I'm not embarrassed that I have one. But BECAUSE I have one, I won't apologize for actually GETTING somewhere in life, unlike most of today's generation which wants **** handed to them on a silver platter because they've been indoctrinated into the "entitlement" generation. Getting some sick satisfaction because you're "gettin' one over on 'the man'" by screwing the corporation out of your pay is a VERY short-sighted approach. It's the same approach used by my 15-year-old son. I guess I thought at some point you grew out of that juvenile mindset.

Apparently not. :coffee:
You're behind the curve, old timer, what you describe is the way it used to be. There ain't no way that anybody stays around for retirement anymore, it's simply a question of whose terms you lose your job on for the vast majority of workers. I'm not embarassed to have a work ethic and take pride in the job I do either, but I'm under no illusion that it will result in advancement for me, hell they're already looking for a way to 86 my old ass and replace me with something younger and cheaper that won't use any of the meager benefits they provide. And that's OK, just don't patronize me with any of that company loyalty nonsense because we all know it's BS.

Nowhere in my entire discussion have I equated the need for a work ethic with company loyalty (whatever THAT means...). And there are millions and millions of people out there on a company and/or union retirement who would disagree with your statement that nobody "stays around for retirement anymore".

I'm willing to bust my ass for my country... because my country already has for me... no company is ever deserving of even a fraction of that loyalty. they prove it on a daily basis, over and over.

you may do the smug 'middle aged man' routine now where you pat yourself on the back for being terribly clever and having it all figured out, and how kids these days... etc, etc... but frankly it's kind of a tired tune

Z and Cleets,

You forget that the boomers were pretty liberal and entitlement minded back in their 20s. Not only did they help give us the disaster that was LBJ, there were at least tens of thousands more who thought he wasn't radical enough. Yet many of the boomers went out into the real world and got the idealism and sometimes their liberalism beaten out of them by reality. It's going to be the same thing with millenials, only we are getting it beaten out of us at a much earlier age. Just look at the support that Ron Paul has gotten from young people in this last election. There's no way Barry Goldwater got anywhere near that level of support from young people back in the 1964 election. Even the younger people who are left-leaning have a definite realist streak and aren't into the hedonistic, touchy-feely communal crap the boomers were into.

If boomers are really freaking out this much over the millenials, it's a wonder the generation that lived through the great depression didn't have heart-attacks over the boomers.

Yes indeed, both perspectives are legitinate and I too have experienced each!

But a bad work experience that does not justify a leap of faith towards socialism! Absurd!

Good, bad or ugly - I made my money in a capitalist system here in the good 'ol USA...
I am however not confused why so many young people distrust it right now...

right, like all those lazy government teat-suckers in our military rather than being "good enough" to be hired as private security...

some people are motivated by things beyond greed. your presumption that people who chose to serve their country are all lazy and chickenshit is repugnant.

Better to steal than to earn? Earning is not greed. Nor is producing a good or service that someone wishes to purchase. Yes, such as Blackwater, the finest private security on the planet. In any case, stealing is worse than greed, because the theft victim has no choice.

Being a political operative is not necessarily serving your country. Very few politicians and even fewer political operatives serve the public good. In your case, it is most likely stealing.

There is a big difference between a political operative and a member of our armed forces, but yes, even in the greatest military in the world, some few only suck the teat... Nonetheless, you do not belong in the same category as even the lowest military teat-sucking sad sack, because even the sad sack has risked something "beyond greed." You have risked nothing more than what a crook risks.

"Beyond greed..?!???"

Yet you purchase goods and services made by productive people and are envious of the earnings of productive people. What a fraud! You are afraid to compete because you fear that you cannot measure up! Perhaps the only way you can possibly measure up is to pull productive useful people down. That is your entire socialist political premise. Those like you who use the power of government to steal from productive people are not public servants, they are crooks.

It was recently announced to me by a friend that Socialism is now more trendy and exciting than ever...
I responded: "Gosh really... why so..?"

Apparently Enron as a role model for business, Wall Street greed, giant payouts to failing corporate leaders and Hedge Fund managers skimming millions off the top have inspired the 20 & 30 something generation to distrust free market capitalism more than socialism...

That combined with Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck foaming at the mouth every afternoon like broken records...

This just in:
The Soviet Union is gone - the young no longer see socialism as anti-Americanism
Free market capitalism and talk radio are doing what Eugene Debs, Edward Bellamy, Albert Einstein, Susan B. Antony, Helen Keller, George Bernard Shaw and their comrades never could = Promote Socialism

Talk Radio In tandem with Wall Street greed and rampant corporate thievery are building socialism in America...

Sometimes we can only blame ourselves
I rest my case.

Hippie, you are a full-fledged, unadulterated, commie, pinko, zombie.

America will recover from this economic mess, once Obama's voted out in 2012 and the enviro-whacko idiocy has run it's course, and in the end, the self-hating socialist elitists will once again be relegated to their place as fringe lunatics.
Dude...
I don't care what political form America functions under - makes no difference to me...
Not caring does not make me a communist - I think each generation should decide for themselves

Relax grampy you're almost dead - try to enjoy your last few moments here...
