I guess I view it entirely differently. I always felt if I worked hard I would ultimately get rewarded through promotion, making myself qualified for a higher paying job at another organization, etc. See, THAT'S what I call work ethic, and I'm not embarrassed that I have one. But BECAUSE I have one, I won't apologize for actually GETTING somewhere in life, unlike most of today's generation which wants **** handed to them on a silver platter because they've been indoctrinated into the "entitlement" generation. Getting some sick satisfaction because you're "gettin' one over on 'the man'" by screwing the corporation out of your pay is a VERY short-sighted approach. It's the same approach used by my 15-year-old son. I guess I thought at some point you grew out of that juvenile mindset.

There ain't no way that anybody stays around for retirement anymore, it's simply a question of whose terms you lose your job on for the vast majority of workers. I'm not embarassed to have a work ethic and take pride in the job I do either, but I'm under no illusion that it will result in advancement for me, hell they're already looking for a way to 86 my old ass and replace me with something younger and cheaper that won't use any of the meager benefits they provide. And that's OK, just don't patronize me with any of that company loyalty nonsense because we all know it's BS.

sorry, after watching both of my parents take that approach and getting fucked over - i dont buy the Horatio Alger myth. you can work your ass off and when the company decides it's used you up, they leave you by the side of the road... in my parents case, too old to be hired ANYWHERE... in my dads case hobbled by injuries from 20 years of working for them (he was rewarded three years ago by being put on three 12 hour days Saturday-Sunday-Monday - loading trailers)... hard work and playing by the rules hasn't exactly worked out for most of the people I know...

with my mom... 30 years in their corporate office... dumped like a lot of used office furniture - now forced to temp because at her age no company will bother to hire her...

Nowhere in my entire discussion have I equated the need for a work ethic with company loyalty (whatever THAT means...). Just look at the support that Ron Paul has gotten from young people in this last election. There's no way Barry Goldwater got anywhere near that level of support from young people back in the 1964 election.
