No, punishment is not an issue. No way UNI should be punished. However, why should they be rewarded for losing?

Big difference. They were already highly ranked, clenz. What the fuck did you want to happen when you lost? If you were say, 18 when you lost to Iowa, maybe we'd be having a different talk. Do you want to be ranked above Nova, is that the issue clenz? Did you beat Temple? Did you beat Virginia? For fucks sake, no, you fucking lost.

have to agree - that's a strong post.

I think we differ in philosophy - i get the impression you and gil are very focused on "did they win?" a valid argument and basis for judgment - you aren't punishing UNI for losing to Iowa, but you aren't rewarding them for losing either, no matter how close it was... fair enough I suppose.

My preference would be to evaluate how a team looked in their game (where at all possible) a team can look very good in a close loss to a team well above them in the rankings (like UNI-Iowa) or they can look terrible in a victory over a much weaker team (like Montana St-Dixie St) which team should be rewarded? the team that scheduled up against the FBS team and pushed them to the limit? or the team that scheduled a D-II cupcake and nearly blew it, but managed to eke out a win? (or in your logic are both teams going to slide in favor of a third team who looked solid holding serve over their opponent (say... UNH over Northeastern?))

I guess for me, watching the Gophers over the last 15 years feast on a schedule of cupcakes to be 5-0 in early October, but having played nobody of consequence, I'm dubious of the won-loss record as a measure of a teams quality. this cuts both ways, a 3 loss CAA team at the end of this year could EASILY be a top 10 team in the nation, such is the strength of their conference (yeah that's right a midwestern guy admitted it) the true upside of FCS football is that at least these squads get to prove it where it counts, so we've got that going for us... which is nice. That said, in this case - most of the top teams in the FCS have a win over an FBS team... albeit the ACC and Temple... (this year i think only about half the ACC could win the CAA... if that) so while I'm impressed with those wins (any win over the FBS is a commendable win) none of those teams was sniffing the FBS top 25...

See, here is the thing. I agree with you 80%. I don't subscribe to a loss is a loss is a loss, but when you are a top team, fighting against other top teams for a ranking, it is a strong showing by an already percieved to be strong team. Had UNI been ranked say, 15 for arguments sake, prior to the Iowa game, and they weren't already considered a National Title contender, then its a "holy shit did you see UNI, UNDERESTIMATED". That wasn't the case though. If it were you would have seen a huge jump in my eyes.

Now, if a team like, say Villanova squeaks by Penn (or Mt St v. Dixie), because their O-Line didn't play to their capabilities, but they still won, where is the basis for dropping them? They won, didn't they? They managed to win with out the performance of their strongest component (for Nova). That to me is also a sign of a dominate overall team. I think if we had a stronger performance in the first half (less shit balls from whitney, catches by harvey like we had in the second half, and even the presence of an o-line) we would have DEMOLISHED Temple. However, it was also their, and our first game. Jsut like it was for Iowa and UNI. Believe me, from experience both first hand and second hand, that first game is TOUGH. Camp is not a game, and those guys are worn down from it and don't know where they stand yet. Regardless, win or lose, that first game is a kick in the teeth to most teams. You usually come out confident and ready for the season, or you come out disappointed and ready to prove something (Iowa v. Penn State). .02

So, basically it is your opinion that Iowa played way down to its competition and that is why the UNI game was close, and if it was played again it would be an easy Iowa win?

What exactly is your top 5 right now? I agree with the top 5 of the TSN poll right now. I am mostly refuting Gil's ridiculous claims that UNI is not in "his" top 10. LOL

Well - I can respect your logic - if not entirely agree with your conclusions. Is it strange that knowing our pollsters put this much thought in to their rankings makes me VERY excited for our poll next week?

looking forward to getting to see nova/w&m on TV... will help in terms of making a good apples to apples comparison (thank you VERSUS!)

Yeah, it should be a great looking poll.

As for the Game.... god I can't wait to be there.

Right now my own personal line for the game is Villanova +5 (w/o oline and resorting to pass) -8.5 with o-line play.... see 410 yards rushing with our #1 rusher without a yard after the first half

This will be a ridiculous game

edit: first QUARTER...

Here is how I currently voted:

1. Richmond
2. Northern Iowa
3. William & Mary
4. James Madison
5. Southern Illinois
6. New Hampshire
7. Villanova
8. Montana
9. Appalachian St.
10. South Dakota St.

I actually moved UNI up after the Iowa game because it confirmed to me that UNI is picking up where they left off last year as a quality team. I had/have Montana lower because of their QB situation and I want to see how Hauck handles the situation now that Selle seems to have found a rhythm. As the CAA teams play each other it will shake out the top 15.

UNI fans are fucking killing me.

I see what everybody is saying and like the discussion but the bitching about where you're ranked based on what YOUR OPINION is just cracks me up. WR put up the best and most cogent points in this debate and I am impressed my friend.

Where did you guys rank Montana?

Not really, until proven otherwise, I have had South Dakota State as the best team in the MVFC since the preseason. SDSU has 4 wins, UNI has 3 wins, what's so ridiculous about that? It's not the same as your opinion. I don't know anyone that knows who will win the National Championship at this point, but if a team keeps winning, they keep moving up in the polls. If I was a UNI fan, I would be more concerned about a week 8 ranking than a week 4 ranking.

I am not worried about where we are ranked. But there is no way that UNI is not a top 5 team right now, by how they have looked, and what they have accomplished. You have made no argument that makes any sense to prove othersie. And every single poll and opinion agrees with me, except you.

And LOL, at UNI having to "prove otherwise" that they are better than SDSU because you said so. I realize this is your opinion, but if anybody needs to prove that they are better, its the rest of the conference. They all need to prove that they can beat UNI and SIU, who have absolutely dominated the conference for a long time. UNI and SIU are the best teams in the MVFC "until proven otherwise", SDSU is the team that needs to prove that they deserve to be on top, and they have not done that yet. :coffee:

Most people thought I was crazy to say App St was going to beat Michigan too. :coffee:
I have no problem going with what I believe and see, over what the majority believes.

On the otherhand, just because more people agree with your opinion doesn't prove it so either. We will know for sure when UNI plays SDSU.

Not to hurt your argument Gil, cause I love that your fighting for us in the south here, but we only have 3 wins because we had our bye week during week one :? But otherwise, rock on man!
