MVFC Top 25/playoff breakdown

Post by pantherrob82 »

MVFC:
Northern Iowa- (3-1, 1-0) Without being a homer, it’s still hard to pick against UNI. The defense pitched 10 shutout quarters until the Missouri State defense scored on the backups with 7 seconds left. That said, UNI has a hard row to hoe @NDSU, SIU, @ SDSU. The winner of the MVC will prove themselves. Their only loss was to Iowa on a last second FG. On a side note, Iowa beat No. 5 Penn State in Happy Valley tonight.

Wins: South Dakota 66-7 , St. Francis (PA) 30-0 , @ Missouri State 35-7
Losses: @ No. 22 Iowa L 17-16

South Dakota State- (3-0, 2-0) Unfortunately I haven’t seen the Jackrabbits yet this year. If I had the chance to watch them, I may pick them over UNI. Their defense gave up their first offensive touchdown tonight at Illinois State. Big test next week against Cal Poly.

Wins: Georgia Southern 44-6 , Indiana State 41-0 , @ Illinois State 38-17

Southern Illinois- (2-1, 1-0) It’s hard to get a grasp on the 2009 edition of the Salukis. A close loss at Marshall, a sub D-I beat down, and a 10 point win over NDSU. Did SIU struggle or is NDSU improving. Like I said earlier, the MVFC season will sort itself out. This is just the way I rank the teams at this point. Not much separates any of these 3.

Wins: Southwest Baptist 59-7 ,North Dakota State 24-14
Losses: @ Marshall 31-28

????: Youngstown State…what’s up with them?

I know you don't like YSU lol, and its mutual towards UNI, but I said, teams have good days and bad days and today was YSU's bad day and they still won 28-0. 2 missed field goals, a touchdown pass called back, a 40 yard run to the one called back, and some other bad penalties kept ISU in it all day.

I am liking what I am seeing out of SDSU, but they got a tough one next week in Cal-Poly.

I don't have anything personal against YSU. They got smoked at Pitt, didn't show up in the beginning of the last 3 games against subpar opponents. I think my hesitency is justified. Can you give me some feedback besides the fact you think I don't like YSU? Why should they be ranked? Why should they be considered a front runner for the MVFC trophy?

I never said they were a front-runner for the MVFC trophy, that is UNI's to lose. They've played very bad to start off the last three games and they ended up winning all three with comfortable margins, two of which were on the road. I'll take these 4th quarter performances any day!

Listen, let me make it clear, YSU will MOST LIKELY lose two of their final three road games [UNI-SIU-NDSU], at least I hope it is only two, which should set them up for an 8-3 record, if they can win their remaining home games, which could be an adventure in itself.

Throw the Pitt game out the window because that was a given loss, but since then our defense has given up just 28 points in 3 games. FYI: Our punt team gave up a touchdown on a blocked punt to Austin Peay and a punt return for a touchdown against Northeastern. Defensively we've played pretty damn well.

Offensively we have some fabulous wide receivers in Jones, Barnes, and Pitts, but it has been the lackluster play of Summers early on that has held this offense back in my eyes. Our coaching staff is protecting him a bit too much from injury, because he is still very hesitant to keep the ball and run, which causes him to force passes that end up in the hands of the other team. And our run game which looked so promising with so much depth, hasn't panned out very well just yet. Our OL play will need to be much better for MSU next week.

You can be the judge if YSU deserves to be ranked or not. They are winning the games they are supposed to be winning, but perhaps it will be another week or two before they are ranked.

Thanks for the info. It's always good to hear from the fans of the teams that I may be overlooking.

IMO, YSU hasn't yet shown anything that merits ranking or conference title contention as of yet.
That's not to say that it isn't possible, though.

With our schedule, I can understand that...

Many fans believe it is IMPERATIVE to start 5-1 with the relative ease of the opening portion of our schedule. The final 5 is where the problems lie.

NDSU is a tough team to figure out right now. Our D was awful in the 1st 3 games. Much improved in this last one other than one blown coverage big TD pass. Our QB is causing the most discussion here in Bisonville. Most think he should be benched, I tend to agree. His accuracy and decision making are his weak points and I'd say those are two pretty important things you want in your QB...

Holy crap some reasoned thoughts on this matter from a Bison fan :wtf: Its great to hear some logic behind it finally, all I've ever seen from other Bison fans is either "hey its not all his fault" or "THAT STUPID SONOFABITCH IS THE WORST PIECE OF SHIT I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE AND SHOULD DIE! :protesst:" Its great to hear someone actually giving reasons behind the hate  . I mean I saw people blaming him for getting sacked too much when I would generally call that an o-line problem when he can't even turn around before getting hit.

one of the differences at CS as opposed to the old country or even bisonville... the ndsu fans here are different...

the bison were never going to contend this season... ever. rampant homerism leads many a bison fan astray on that point - this years team just simply isn't that good... i dont think we'll be Georgia Southern disappointing - but this year it just isn't gonna happen for the boys.

spelunker is a man of reason...he always gave a fair assessment, even when others were awarding the Bison the National Championship...and I, for one, welcome his return to this board...

Massey Predictions:
YSU over MSU 30-22
UNI over INSU 45-3
NDSU over ILSU 36-24
SIU over WIU 29-21
Cal Poly over SDSU 31.1-30.7 [This is a pure toss-up]

I didn't see the game but what I heard was "big, physical, slow, one-dimensional", sort of like WIU with the Herbster. One of the NDSU scores was a freak TD after having their FG blocked, and observers say the wet field was instrumental in keeping the score as close as it was.

I just listened to it, but I think the score was about right. We had a freak TD, but they had one off of a blown coverage for 65 yrds I think. We're not getting to the QB enough and our WRs are all subpar at best. I figured we'd go 6-5 again this year. 7-4 at best.

Thanks for the welcome back everyone, you too Cap't :)
