WSU/PSU rematch after NCAA record game

Last meeting in Portland was in 2007, WSU won 73-68 (football game). It was an all division NCAA record.

Last year, the Wildcats scored the first 31 points in the game, then held off a furious Viking comeback in a 31-21 win in Ogden...

the 2007 meeting at PGE Park is the highest-scoring Division I regulation football game in college history, 73-68. Amazingly, that was NOT the most points by either team in the series.

Weber State earned a 74-6 win in 1965. A Mouse Davis-coached Portland State team won 75-0 in 1980. A 65-43 win by the Vikings in 2001 at PGE Park was highest-scoring game in PSU history by two teams, combined, until the 2007 contest... the Big Sky series has been very close, with the Wildcats taking a 7-6 lead last year... PSU leads the series in Portland, 8-6... Weber State comes off its first Big Sky Conference title since 1968, sharing first with Montana, but earning the automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs by winning the head-to-head meeting.

2007 AT PGE PARK: A GAME FOR THE AGES
In a marathon of offensive football, the Weber State Wildcats defeated the Portland State Vikings, 73-68, at PGE Park on Oct. 27, 2007. It was the highest scoring regulation game in NCAA history. There was also a record for most touchdowns in a game (20), while PSU QB Drew Hubel set a PSU record and tied an NCAA I FCS record with nine touchdown passes in his first career start... there were a total of 1,189 yards of offense... there were also 485 kickoff return yards on 22 returns... Hubel threw for 485 yards, while WSU QB Cameron Higgins threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns... WSU WR Bryant Eteuati had 341 all-purpose yards in the game... PSU’s Tremayne Kirkland and David Lewis each had four touchdowns receptions.

Later on that winter, Weber won the first basketball meeting, matching the score of the football game exactly (73-68). The only difference was that the basketball game was in Ogden and the football game was in Portland.

Later in the spring, the Vikings won the second basketball meeting, but by a lower score (I think).

One other interesting thing about the game was that, by the beginning of the fourth quarter, both defenses looked completely worn out, thus enabling a higher score. Hubel's passing accounted for nine of the ten touchdowns PSU scored. The tenth and final Vikings touchdown came on a FG try by Weber State in the closing minutes of the game that was blocked and run back by the Vikings. That touchdown was scored by Andy Schantz, our starting linebacker that year.

Interesting to note, also, that that game was sort of a coming out for both Higgins and Hubel as both offenses for the Wildcats and the Vikings that year were sputtering. If I remember correctly, Weber's defense had been keeping the Wildcats in games all year until that game, and PSU was not pleased with their offense at that time, thus causing a true freshman (Hubel) to start the game. Before, most people had forecasted a defensive game, which as it turned out was definitely not.
