Coaches Poll (Week 3)

Post by danefan »

Richmond Preserves its Hold on No. 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Richmond turned four fumble recoveries into 24 points en route to a 47-0 victory over Hofstra Saturday, helping the Spiders to maintain their hold on the No. 1 ranking this week. The defending national champions have now won 12 straight games, a new school record. Richmond (3-0) received 25 first-place votes and 673 points overall.

There was little change to the top 10 this week, as all 10 teams either picked up victories or were idle. Villanova (3-0) remained at No. 2 after its 14-3 victory at Pennsylvania. The Wildcats received one first-place vote.

Montana (3-0), Northern Iowa (2-1) and William & Mary (3-0) rounded out the top 5.

Coming in at No. 6 was James Madison (1-1), followed by New Hampshire (2-0) at No. 7 and Southern Illinois (1-1) at No. 8.

The one change to the top 10 came with McNeese State (3-0). The Cowboys defeated Savannah State 56-0 Saturday and took over at No. 9 for idle Appalachian State (0-2). The Mountaineers fell one spot to No. 10. McNeese State also received one first-place vote.

Weber State (1-2) moved up one spot to No. 11 after its 44-17 win against Idaho State. Central Arkansas (1-1) also moved up a spot after it defeated Western Kentucky 28-7.

Massachusetts (2-1) defeated Rhode Island 30-10 and moved up two spots to No. 15. South Dakota State (2-0) made the biggest jump, moving three places, to No. 18 after it blanked Indiana State, 41-0. Jacksonville State (1-2), which defeated Alabama A&M 45-13, moved up one spot to No. 21. Eastern Kentucky also moved up a spot to No. 22 after its 17-7 win over Tennessee Tech.

Two new teams joined the poll this week. Holy Cross (3-0) defeated Harvard 27-20 Saturday and moved to No. 23, while Florida A&M (3-0) defeated Howard 48-10 Thursday to take over at No. 25.

Falling out of the poll were Maine (2-1), which fell to Albany 20-16 Saturday, and Harvard (0-1) which lost to Holy Cross.

The Colonial Athletic Association remains in control of the Top 25 with six ranked teams. Three of those teams are in the top 5 and five are in the top 10. The Big Sky, Missouri Valley, Southern and Southland Conferences each have three ranked teams, while the Mid-Eastern Athletic and Ohio Valley Conferences each have two. The Big South Conference, Great West Conference and Patriot League are each represented by one team.

The FCS Coaches Poll website can be viewed here and is updated each week after the release of the poll.

The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.

Who is still voting for Maine?

Resume:
OT win over a DII team.
10 point win over perenial bottom feeder Northeastern
4 pt loss to (1-2) Albany who got smoked by UMass.

I should want them in the top 25, but they don't even come close to deserving it. Plus there is not logic to this voting. How did people vote for Maine and yet not a single voter voted for Albany. That means someone's ballot is entirely illogical.

And who's voting for Hofstra?

Follow the Maine logic out though Col. If Maine beats Syracuse this week they'll get back into the Top 25. What happens to Albany then? Shouldn't Albany get a sniff at Top 25 then? Or do we just punish Maine for losing to Albany but not reward Albany for beating Maine?

That's what will happen and that's the logic I don't follow.

You know what I've posted in the past about Albany...I think your program should be rewarded....ask the GSU fans if they think you're a "cupcake"...

I still don't have an issue with Maine getting votes....Albany should get lots more than they did...and I picked Maine over the Orange in an upset special....I think they are not a bad team...

There is no rhyme or reason to how folks vote...a team with one win and two losses is in the top 15 WHY??? Not because of what they have done this year, so obviously because of their "past"...

Yet Albany, with a 1-2 record, beating a then ranked FCS team, isn't even in the top 25.... WTFO?????

Ok, sounds like we're on the same page.

And BTW, I might blow a gasket if Maine beats Syracuse and Georgia Southern beats Elon this weekend.

Really WR, UNI at 8? Wow, didn't realize pushing a top 20 FBS school to the limit, and having a D that has gone 116 minutes without allowing a point wasn't top 5 material. To take that scoreless streak a little further. UNI has only allowed 14 points since the start of the 4th quarter in week 1. Iowa scored with 13:18 left in the 4th quarter and USD scored 4 minutes into the week 2 game. 24 points in three games.

The offense, however, has scored 105 points in three games.

I really don't get where you get UNI at #8

So, since UMass pushed a Big 12 team to within 4 points of winning...our "D" has only allowed 10 points in the second half (total) of our three games...and our offense has scored 91 points....are you saying we should be higher than #8...

I thought about going 8. Albany 9. Maine 10. UNI...... but I knew clenz would go nuclear over the 8 spot so I didn't bother putting UNI where they deserve to be in the rankings. :coffee:

I am glad to see the coaches knew how our game against TCU went. AGS homers dropped us way down cause they only see the final score.
