Re: Champions League 2009/2010
Basically, the more teams your country has in the CL and the farther they go over the past 5 season, the better your coefficient will be the next season. Makes sense that England/Italy/Spain would have the most teams and the highest rankings. But it makes it even more difficult for the little guys to break in...(BUT at least they have a chance to play in the tourney by qualification)

btw... i'm new to this stuff (as if you couldn't tell) and am wondering about decent places online to find good coverage of it... soccernet seems... lacking. any advice? i know some good epl sources, but beyond that it's been difficult to find english language coverage a bit...
North Dakota State University Bison 2011 and 2012 National Champions

foxsoccer.com (EPL, SPL and Serie-A heavy)
espnsoccernet.com (VERY EPL heavy though, and SCL heavy now too since they just signed a TV contract with them)
worldsoccer.com
soccernews.com
I also go to my team's websites (FC Porto and PSV Eindhoven) just becuase it's funny to read their broken english translations. Not all teams have english websites though.
I also have Fox Soccer Channel and Gol TV on cable. Setanta is the best soccer channel, IMO, even though I don't have it. FSC is airing the CL this season, not ESPN. Good thing in my opinion becuase I always felt like the CL was getting in the way of some other sport ESPN wanted to show at 2:30 in the afternoon, like billiards or poker.

You can try uefa.com for news and whatnot.
Re: Champions League 2009/2010
rojadirecta is very spotty. I'd say I've only found a feed that works about 25% of the time, and I generally don't care if it is in english or not. I haven't tried channelsurfing.net yet though.Grizalltheway wrote:For watching games online, try:TwinTownBisonFan wrote:btw... i'm new to this stuff (as if you couldn't tell) and am wondering about decent places online to find good coverage of it... soccernet seems... lacking. any advice? i know some good epl sources, but beyond that it's been difficult to find english language coverage a bit...

Channelsurfing is definitely better for Champions League, I usually use rojadirecta for Bundesliga games that channelsurfing doesn't have.bandl wrote:rojadirecta is very spotty. Re: Champions League 2009/2010
Yep, and it shouldn't require you to install anything. It's been a while since I've used it, I usually use atdhe.net for streams.bandl wrote:Is it free and pretty easy to use?
Also, teams individual rankings:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uef ... k2009.html
http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/calc.html
And as for calculating team rankings, the above site gives a great description. This is my summary of it, for this year:
1) The country coefficient is determined by the total number of points earned divided by the number of teams from that country participating. The total is added for the previous five years, determining the country's overall coefficient.
2) The team coefficient for any one year is determined by 20% of the country coefficient for that year, multiplied by the total number of points earned divided by the number of teams from that country participating plus the total number of points earned. So the formula is basically:
Tc = 0.2(Tp/N) + Tp
3) The sum of the previous five years coefficients equals the teams rank in UEFA

Re: Champions League 2009/2010
For the Bundesliga, kicker.de but Google usually does a competent translation job. Of course it helps to speak German.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:btw... i'm new to this stuff (as if you couldn't tell) and am wondering about decent places online to find good coverage of it... soccernet seems... lacking. any advice? i know some good epl sources, but beyond that it's been difficult to find english language coverage a bit...
uefa.com on matchdays/day before usually has good write-ups
Soccernet, depending on which region/country you want can be good, but it is EPL focused
I'll read goal.com for a laugh, it's always crap reporting, editing, and the people commenting show why the internet is the low point of human communication.
It basically depends on what league you want covered. I hate the EPL, and most English language coverage focuses on that league. DC United is my favorite team, so I focus on MLS the most. Steve Goff, voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider, is our beat writer and the best soccer reporter in the country. I read his blog multiple times daily, Soccer by Ives is decent, but he's a complete NY homer, and Grant Wahl's pretty good.

Re: Champions League 2009/2010
First matches of the group stage start today!

My picks underlined below
Tue., Sep. 15
Juventus vs. Bordeaux
Maccabi Haifa vs. Bayern
Wolfsburg vs. CSKA Moscow
Besiktas vs. Man United - The only reason I pick Besiktas is because ManU might have trouble travelling to Instanbul and playing in a not-so-friendly environment. I would not be surprised if ManU won though
FC Zurich vs. Real Madrid - This should be a laugher by halftime
Marseille vs. AC Milan - Could Marseille beat AC at home? I think so, AC Milan has not looked good at all in Serie A and dating back to their friendly visits around the U.S.
Chelsea vs. FC Porto - Everyone knows my team is FC Porto, but Chelsea is playing fantastic and are playing at home.
I'll pick FC Porto to win their home match against Chelsea
Atletico Madrid vs. APOEL
Wed., Sep. 16
Liverpool vs. Debreceni
Lyon vs. Fiorentina
Inter Milan vs. Barcelona - THE match up of the group stage...I'm going with Barca away as the defending champs...wouldn't be surprised if both Eto'o and Ibrahimovic both scored
Dyn. Kiev vs. Rubin Kazan - Good luck to any team that has to play in the Ukraine
Stuttgart vs. Rangers
Sevilla vs. Unirea Urziceni
Olympiakos vs. Alkmaar
Standard Liege vs. Arsenal

Re: Champions League 2009/2010
Sorry bandl Porto almost pulled a draw. Only being down one on the aggregate is good though.

Re: Champions League 2009/2010
Yeah, Porto definitely had a chance to pull out a draw or the win. They looked pretty good considering they were away and how sloppy the conditions were near the end. If they can play like that against Atletico and Apoel I think they stand a very good chance to advance.slycat wrote:Sorry bandl Porto almost pulled a draw. I have no delusions about Porto this year though...they are rebuilding (as they are every year, just more so this year than in recent years) so they are young and unproven. But they are still good enough that they will most likely win their domestic league, and I think it would be a great accomplishment just to advance to the knockout rounds. The quarters and beyond would just be gravy for the team.
