Trump told interesting stories about George Washington and the Panama Canal. They’re both fake

Trump said George Washington "had two desks in his pre-White House." He continued: "And they were right next to each other. One was for business and one was for the presidency. He had two desks, in the same room. And so you're allowed to. But I choose not to. I don't talk to my kids about, you know, this stuff."

During his July 4 speech marking the nation's 250th birthday, Trump spoke of Americans' role in building the Panama Canal, the vital waterway he has previously said the US should not have ceded to Panama last century. "And by the way," Trump added, "38,000 Americans died to give us one of the greatest engineering feats of all time: Panama Canal."

That number is not close to true.

While the century-old records are imprecise, they show about 5,600 people died during the canal's American construction phase between 1903 and 1914 – and "of those, the vast majority were Afro-Caribbeans," such as  workers from Barbados and Jamaica, Julie Greene, a history professor at the University of Maryland and author of the book "The Canal Builders: Making America's Empire at the Panama Canal," told CNN after Trump made a similar claim in his inaugural address last year.

The late historian David McCullough, author of another book on the building of the canal, found that "the number of white Americans who died was about 350."

Thousands of additional workers, perhaps around 22,000, died during the French construction phase that preceded the American phase. But Trump said, as he has before, that he was talking about American deaths in particular.

Mark Kelly on aircraft carrier catapult order: ‘Donald Trump knows nothing about this stuff’

Trump earlier Thursday directed the Navy to return to steam-powered catapults and hydraulic systems on its Ford-class aircraft carriers, ditching the newer electromagnetic technology.

Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and NASA astronaut who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, warned the move would force the Navy to redesign ships that are well into development and are "probably going to cost billions of dollars."

The Arizona Democrat has said that despite his own experience in hundreds of career takeoffs and landings, his degree in aeronautical and marine engineering and his work as a test pilot, he still would not tell Navy engineers how to design a carrier.

"Donald Trump knows nothing about this stuff," the senator continued in the interview. "Not in any world would I suggest to the Navy to change the design of some system on a ship at this point."

Trump has been highly critical of electromagnetic catapults for years, calling them too expensive and complicated compared with the steam system used on older carriers.

"Billions of dollars more they spent on electric catapults, and they're not good," the president said at a defense summit in Pennsylvania last month.

In contrast, the Navy said earlier this year that preliminary testing showed EMALS and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford — which Trump has criticized as being too complex and costly — contributed to a higher rate of aircraft launches than on older Nimitz-class carriers.
